Glymur, Iceland

Glymur is the highest waterfall in Iceland so when H asked if I would be up for a hike to see it I was all in. H had never been to Glymur so neither of us had any idea what to expect. When we were in the parking lot though and saw several people in serious hiking gear (think walking sticks, major boots and backpacks filled with supplies) we were starting to wonder what we were getting ourselves into. We of course were not wearing any proper hiking gear just some regular jeans and tennis shoes so after seeing this I was a bit nervous.

To start the hike you walk through a rock, or a cave whatever you want to call it.

Okay so far so good.

After walking through the cave you come down to a beautiful river. Silly me for thinking we would be having a peaceful walk along the river.

Pretty right?

We walked along the river for about ten minutes enjoying the views and then the fun began.

When the trail ended at this unstable log H didn’t even hesitate before crossing over. I happen to be a bit more cautious about walking across freezing cold rivers on a wobbly log and took some time to be convinced to try crossing over.

When I stepped on and felt how lose the cable you were supposed to use for support as I may have had a mini panic attack and screamed at H, which he so graciously caught on camera for me.

It took me awhile to make my way across the log.

After that exciting adventure we started our climb up the mountain. We hiked for probably 45 minutes up some steep hill sides but I didn’t even care, the views were amazing.

It felt like you could see over the entire country!

I love all the different elements you see, rugged mountain ranges, the river and the ocean in the distance, Iceland is always full of natural beauty. When we finally reached the waterfall it made the entire exhausting experience so worth it.

Our hike to Glymur is by far my favorite hike I have done here in Iceland. Not only did we see some beautiful views but we have a pretty good story to tell about our adventure as well.

Two weeks after this trip I left Iceland and headed back to Oregon for the summer. After working an extremely boring office job and being away from H for 3 months we were reunited that September and took off on a month-long backpacking trip through Europe together.

Next week we will be back in Paris where our Euro trip began. I can’t wait to start sharing all our pictures and stories from that trip with you all!

Question of the Day?
Would you cross a river on a log? Have you ever hiked back to waterfalls?
