6 Simple Tips To Beat Writers Block

Now that I am working full time preparing my posts for the week in advance has become crucial for me. When I sit down to plan my editorial calendar the first three days of the week are never to much of a problem to fill. I have a weekend recap of sorts on Monday and travel posts typically on both Tuesday and Wednesdays. The end of the week is often where I get stuck.

Sometimes I have great ideas to share or had an exciting week that I want to recap. Other times I am completely stuck and have just your average week with nothing exciting to share. When these moments of writers block happen to me I turn to a few simple tricks that often times help give me some inspiration.

Tips for Writers Block

1. When In Doubt List It Out
Lists on any topic can make for either a fun post, an informative post, or just a random post about whatever you want to talk about. When its hard to think of one set topic for an entire post I like to turn to lists to help get my thoughts written down without sounding to random. A list of tips, Friday Five or a list of things currently happening are some ideas of how I use lists to write a post.

2. Get Some Pinspiration
For me one of the first things I do when I am looking for inspiration for a post is to go to Pinterest. Browsing the words of wisdom section always seems to spark some creativity in me. More times than not I will find some quotes that I can really relate to at that given moment. This quote by Tina Fey inspired this post.

Using a quote I let me creativity roll and just write. Sometimes it turns into a great post, other times it turns into a post that will never be published but it never fails to get my writing mojo going. An example was my post I wrote on embracing being different and not letting it hold you back.

3. Revisit Your Past
Going through the hundreds of photos I have on my computer always reminds me of past trips and stories I want to share. Bonus, it is a great way for me to document my past before I forget them and gives me a way to reflect back on them later.

4. Use Your Pets
Azora is no stranger to Unlocking Kiki and I am never short on cute pictures to share of her. I don’t know about everybody else but I will never get over seeing adorable pictures of other bloggers pets.

5. Walk Away
Leave your computer and go off and do something else. Trying to force a post won’t make one magically happen. If you have this superpower kuddos to you! For me though when I am stuck I have to walk away and take my mind off the blog. I don’t want to write a bad post just to write something but usually when I take a break an idea will come to me.

6. GIF Around
If I need to spice up a post I tend to turn to gifs. Usually what starts out as a search for just one gif turns into an hour browsing all the different gifs and laughing at them. I always find it to hard to pick one and often when I see a gif with a favorite line it sparks an idea of something I want to write about. Either way gifs are just fun and you should add them to your post, end of story.

A Lesson in Blog Design

new-girl-jess-zooey-quotes-29_large

Unlocking Kiki finally got a make over!

Its not quite my dream blog design but after spending my weekend attempting to create this design I quickly learned that it will be a work in progress. All I can say is HTML, blog design, coding whatever you want to call it, that shit is confusing!

Computer e-card

H so kindly reminded me of this after probably the hundredth time I said I don’t work well with computers. Damn you technology!

Creating a new look for my blog was a trying process and after several failed attempts I realized I lack the skills to do this on my own. Hours where then spent looking at beautifully made blog designs, but then I remembered oh ya I am a broke expat waiting for a work visa to be approved.

Bridesmaids Quote

Before I threw a fit and hurt someone, aka my computer, I sweetly asked H to be my hero and work some HTML magic.

To his credit H spent hours working on my blog design while also giving me a lesson in HTML 101. Never mind the fact that most of the lesson consisted of conversations like this.

Okay maybe I was the only one quoting Pitch Perfect but I had to make learning HTML a bit more fun. So after a weekend of meltdowns and feeling like this

I can safely say that learning how to amp up my blog design is on the road to success. Everyone can rejoice now.

During this educational weekend a few intelligent thoughts crossed my mind

*Designing a blog is time consuming and requires a patience level I have yet to acquire

*I really should have paid more attention in the HTML class I took in high school

*A Hogwarts education would be more than useful, I wished many times that I could wave a wand and have the perfect blog design appear

*All those bloggers I have enjoyed reading for years, you just reached a new level of kick ass in my book for having such well made blog designs.

*Every time I see a blog get a beautiful new look I will think

I know how much time went behind that design and I also know how much longer it would take me to figure out how to make my blog look half as awesome.

I hope you guys enjoy the new look, but in the wise words of Jess from New Girl

MovieQuotes

Taking inspiration from a post by one of my favorite bloggers Helene I figured explaining my struggles with HTML would be much more enjoyable told with some of my favorite movie quotes :)

Happy Monday everybody!

First Blog Post

A month ago I was packing my bags and saying my goodbyes as I prepared for the next chapter in my life. This new chapter begins 4000 miles away, in a new country, with a completely different language. Welcome to Unlocking Kiki, my blog about my new life in the land of fire and ice, Iceland.

My new home, Reykjavík, Iceland
During my first month here I have figured out a few important things:
•A food processor purchased in America will burn up in the first 30 seconds you plug it into the European outlets, fancy convertor or not.
•The bus will only stop for you to get off if you push a red button prior to the stop you want to get off at. Doesn’t matter if it is a designated bus stop shown on the bus map, the buses just keep on going.
•Buses here tend to be 5 plus minutes late, so don’t fret they will eventually show up.
•At the gym you check in by having your eyes scanned, totally futuristic if you ask me, but I have started to get used to it.
•Baking soda in Icelandic is called Matarsódi (that was a long shopping trip).
•Ikea in Iceland is not the cheap home goods store we have in America. The items here are still the same, just triple the cost.
Reykjavík in the wintertime
Everyday I learn something new, like this morning when I quickly learned that the wind here in Iceland makes windstorms in Oregon look like a nice summer breeze. The best thing though that I have learned so far is that you better be able to laugh at yourself and just enjoy the ride, bumps and all. Or go out and pet an adorable Icelandic pony, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
I hope you follow along and enjoy the journey of Unlocking Kiki!
