Dancing Under the Midnight Sun

You know what is a weird thing that happens in Iceland every year, a thing that I don’t think I will ever really get used to?

The midnight sun.

The picture above, it looks like it was taken sometime in the late afternoon maybe. Well it was actually taken at around midnight this weekend, and yes I had sunglasses on still because the sun was shining so brightly. These long summer days, they are craze amaze to me!

To celebrate the days when the sun never truly goes down H and I joined in on the fun at Secret Solstice, a new music festival in Reykjavik that brought Kelis, Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang Clan to Iceland, talk about flashback songs!

Dancing under the midnight sun was a blast, the party really never does end when it doesn’t get dark! This festival had tons of bands playing on the four different stages, many of which were Icelandic bands. I am always amazed at how many talented Icelandic bands there are and found a few new ones to enjoy, like a new fave FM Belfast.

The highlight of the weekend though, when the sun came out on Sunday, the perfect setting for listening to the Wailers to end the music fun for the weekend.

When H and I weren’t dancing around at Secret Solstice this weekend we fit in a few outdoor adventures, operation take advantage of every nice day we get is still in full swing! Both adventures kept us right in Reykjavik, there are such beautiful outdoor areas to explore just here in the city.

On Saturday we visited an old favorite of mine, Elliðaárdalur, a place H and I frequently go walking with H’s mom at as it is quite close to our house. This is the first time I have gone walking here in the summer months though, quite the difference from when it is covered in snow!

See how beautiful and green everything finally is? After such a long winter I forgot what Reykjavik looked like when things come back to life. Did you spy the wedding parties? On our short walk around we saw two different wedding parties getting their picture taken, quite the beautiful setting they chose!

On Sunday H and I explored a new to me place (even though H says I have been here before, I swear I haven’t) the Reykjavik botanical gardens. This area was right next to where the musical festival was so it was the perfect spot to sneak away to when we were waiting for the shows.

I am a big fan of these weekends full of outdoor fun!

This week is my last week of work before vacation, ekkkk so excited! I feel like a kid in school again counting down the days until summer holiday. Must focus, must focus. Who am I kidding, there is no way anyone in my office if focusing on work, we are all too excited for summer holiday!

And a very Happy Father’s Day to all those dad’s out there. I am one lucky girl and have the most amazing Dad a girl could ask for. I can’t wait to see him next week!

Question of the Day?
How did you celebrate summer solstice? What are your summer holiday plans?

Isn’t it amazing! My body clock is all messed up but I would rather have the long summer days over the dark winter ones!

It looks like so much fun! It must be so destabilizing to be under the sun during the night!
Iceland looks as pretty in the summer as it does under the snow. :)

It really is so crazy to be outside at 11 pm and it is bright and sunny out!

  • http://expatedna.com/ Edna

So green! I’ve only been in winter so excited to see what’s underneath all the snow — I’ll actually be in Iceland in September for a week if you’re around to grab a drink!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love when everything comes back to life after the snow melts away, it get so pretty and green. And yes I would love that!

So crazy that it’s so bright!! It’s still bright here at around 9:30 which I already find confusing, so I can’t even imagine. Sounds like a really fun weekend, and I’m so glad for you that Iceland is finally getting some nice weather - you’ve waited long enough for it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is so crazy! My body clock gets really messed up from it! And right, finally some nice weather, although I wouldn’t mind some more heat :) But I won’t complain, sun is better than snow!

Oh wow, it must be hard to get used to that. Though, it makes for a perfect excuse of endless partying and exploring. And that same thing happens with Miha and me, he says he has already taken me to X place and I just reply “noup, it wasn’t me” Lol. Sometimes I end up remembering but the other 20% of the time I’m pretty sure I was not the lucky lady then haha. Love your outfit btw!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Right! The party never stops when the sun doesn’t set ha. I just found out my grant is approved so it looks like I am headed your way in March!

      • http://www.thesunnysideofthis.com/ Isabel

What!! Aaaaah, I’m so excited! And congratulations on your grant ;) You go girl! Can’t wait for you to meet this little super charming country, we are going to have a blast! Get ready for some serious wanderlust from my part then! ;)

That midnight sun is pretty awesome. We were in St. Petersburg for white nights a few years ago and it never got that light at night. It was still completely surreal though and I can imagine it can be tough when you’re trying to live with it, rather than holiday with it. Is it hard to go to bed?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is so awesome! And I agree it is a bit tough to deal with. I haven’t had a problem falling asleep but I definitely stay up way later than normal since it seems so early outside still ha.

I can’t get over that!!! How crazy! I was amazed when I went back to London how the sun rises at like 4am, but Iceland has that beat I think!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is so crazy how light it stays! Makes up a bit for those dark winter days.

Does you body clock go all out of whack with the midnight sun?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

At first it totally messes me up. Like when the sun starts to rise at 3am it wakes me up. But then I get used to it, I just sleep much less during the summer!

  • http://thecourtneydiaries.wordpress.com/ Courtney

That’s so crazy that it stays so light that long during the summer up there! My family and I took a trip to Alaska a few summers ago and it was the exact same way! It’s a little disorienting at first…

It is so crazy how light it stays. It does totally confuse me at first and then I get used to it.

The festival sounds like so much fun! I don’t think I would ever get used to the midnight sun either — just seems so weird haha!

  • http://www.sedivaabroad.com/ Sarah Elizabeth

That is absolutely incredible. Always heard that the sun never set in Iceland, and we were actually just talking about it the other day. But that’s is amazing hahaha Looks like great craic xx

Amazing. Solstice is one of my favourite times of the year. One of my favourite parts of living in Alaska was being able to sit out at the campfire with friends and not know, or care, what time it was. It felt like 6pm but it in reality it was closer to midnight. People would always comment about how dark they had heard Alaska was, but I also used to remind them that the summers made up for the winters. Happy Solstice!

  • http://meetat-thebarre.com/ Amanda Elizabeth

That is seriously the coolest thing I have ever heard. So during the week are you like mapping out your next weekend adventure? You two go to the most beautiful places and I love following along!

  • http://readtravelbecome.com Mere Salazar

Woah such an awesome weekend!!! The music festival sounds so cool… and it’s SO weird that the sun was still out at midnight! I would never get used to that either. No celebrating the summer solstice for us in Lima… we’re in full-on winter now! Not many winter plans for us other than escaping cold, cloudy Lima for a sunny getaway! Happy last week of work before vacation!!!

  • http://beertimewithwagner.com/ Jordan Beck Wagner

How was that MIDNIGHT!?!? I’m amazed. Looks like so much fun!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

I LOVE white nights although it really throws off the internal clock :)

  • http://jamiewrit.es/ Jamie [Writes]

Ah, that first picture so perfectly exemplifies the Nordic summer: sun at midnight, winter scarf and an alcoholic beverage. Looks exactly like my setup last Friday as we celebrated Midsommar here. The festival sounds wonderful and now I’m off to find FM Belfast on Spotify…
