Travel Wednesday-Iceland
Today’s post takes us back to my first time in Iceland over 2 and a half years ago. When I boarded the plane and headed off to Iceland for the first time I had no idea what to expect to find once I arrived. What I found was the quirky city of Reykavík, the beauty of the midnight sun, and the stunning landscapes everywhere you look.

Iceland Art
Reykavík street art that perfectly captured my first thoughts on Iceland.

Iceland was also the first country I visited where English wasn’t the main language. I had never been surrounded by a foreign language before and while it was a bit of a culture shock it was so interesting to hear a a different language all around me.

Oh and hearing H speak Icelandic for the first time…umm ya that was shocking and very attractive at the same time:) His English is so good that sometimes I forget that its not his first language. I have no idea how he can carry a conversation in both language simultaneous but so glad he can so I can have a translator!

I packed a lot into my three weeks in Iceland and will spend the next few weeks sharing my adventures with you all. Here is an overview of what I got up to on my trip, stay tuned for more detailed posts in the next few weeks :)

View of Reykjavik
A great way to be introduced to Reykavík is to visit the church named Hallgrímskirkja and head up to the top tower in the church. From here you can see the entire city and can take in of all the colorful houses in Reykavík and of course see some great views of the ocean.

Reykjavik
The famous Blue Lagoon was a definite stop on my list, the blue of the water is a sight to see!

Blue Lagoon
I have a whole post to share about my experience at the Blue Lagoon so stayed tuned for more pictures of this gorgeous blue water!

Blue Lagoon
About 20 minutes outside of Reykavík H’s mom has a small cabin that used to be where her grandmother lived. I loved exploring this beautiful area with all the old cabins along the ocean, so pretty.

Iceland Country SideSummer Home in Iceland
The Golden Circle is another popular area visited in Iceland and I of course had to check it out myself. I have so many pictures to share from this trip so be sure to check back next week when I will share more about the Golden Circle and all there is to see, until then here are some teaser photos.

Since my first visit here I been to Iceland 6 more times but there is still so much left to discover. I was in love with the country after my first trip here and I am so glad to now call this beautiful place my home.

Question of the Day?
What do you think of when you think of Iceland and what it looks like?

So lovely- your first time in Iceland looked a bit like mine, but you had FAR better weather! What time of year was it? I went in mid-April and you can literally see a storm blowing in from my photos of the views from Hallgrimskirkja. The area where H’s mom’s cabin is looks enchanting.

I was there in July and I had days with really nice weather and days with not so nice weather. The clouds look much darker in the pictures than it really was outside. Isn’t that cabin so cute, I feel like I am off exploring a place that would be in Lord of the Rings or something ha.

Those colourful houses look too pretty to be real! Like life-sized dolls houses.

Iceland is definitely on my to-visit list. Some day…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Don’t they though! I love all the colored houses and it is totally normal to see a neon green color house next to a hot pink house, love it!

Those photos are beautiful! When I think of Iceland, I think of ice. But I heard Greenland was colder than Iceland. Go Figure!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right, that was exactly what I thought as well! I think that was how I learned about Iceland in school, that it was actually green and Greenland was covered in ice.

Wow, wow, wow. When I think Reykavik I just think “city” so to see your photos today… it’s completely changed my perspective. The houses look like something from a fairy tale and the Blue Lagoon is insanely beautiful! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Reykjavik is such a small town compared to your typical city, it def doesn’t have the usual city feel. Aren’t the houses so cute, I love all the different colored ones you find around the city, helps brighten up the dark winter days to when you have a neon green house next door :)

It’s so idyllic! Why the hell did I choose to move to Moscow, again?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Moscow is def on my list of places to see so I am jealous of your move!

  • Colleen Brynn

Yeah, when a guy speaks another language = totally sexy.
I can’t wait to see the rest of your photos and read more of your stories because it sounds like a lot of things I did! Such a fantastic place. I’m so glad to hear you soaking up all the experiences. x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right, I agree dating a foreign guy has its perks and the whole he can speak 4 language, very sexy:) Thanks so much, glad to hear from someone that has enjoyed Iceland as much as I am!

  • notbeforemytea

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

ooo I was gonna ask if you had been to the blue lagoon! It looks so awesome. Whenever I think of Iceland I think of the mighty ducks “Iceland is green and nice, and greenland, is covered in ice”

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha right I used to love that movie and now that I think about it how random was it to have Iceland in there! I don’t think hockey is very big here either. The blue lagoon is a must see for people I think, at least to see how bright blue the water is!

  • http://www.justathriftygypsy.blogspot.com Katrina Elisabet

I think of fire and ice and Vikings!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Those are my first thoughts as well!
