Surviving Winter in Iceland

For most of November the weather in Iceland was nice and mild and I was in lala land thinking that we had lucked out on a freezing, snowy winter. As soon as December 1st hit though Reykjavik turned into a winter wonderland and gave me a freezing kick in the pants reminder that I am not ready. My Christmas wishlist now looks more like a list for surviving winter, I am not going to freeze my ass off like I did last year!

My Must Haves for Surviving Winter in Iceland

Board/Card Games: Game nights are perfect for those nights when it is to stormy and cold to venture far. Even though it is tempting to hibernate in my house during the winter if someone is having a game night I will be there! I just bought Cards Against Humanity and am hoping it provides lots of laughter filled nights.

Kindle: I am really hoping a Kindle is under my Christmas tree this year! (hint, hint H) During the winter I spend a lot of time reading but with a limited English selection in our library I am dreaming of a Kindle to keep my inner bookworm happy.

Winter Coat: My poor coat I had last year didn’t survive the Icelandic winter, no joke the hood got ripped off in a windstorm. Point of story I am in need of a proper winter coat. I have my eye on this coat, I think the fleece lining would be perfect to keep me nice and warm without feeling like a marshmallow!

Coffee: There is no way I am getting out of my nice warm bed unless a delicious cup of hot coffee is waiting for me. I am a big fan of the Christmas blends and always buy a few extra bags before they go away for the season.

Candles: I must have candles, there are essential for cozy winter nights! H makes fun of how many candles we have in our living room but I love them, and I know he secretly loves them as well. I am on the search for pine scented candles, hoping they have them somewhere in Iceland.

Crockpot: Is there really anything better than coming home on a chilly winter night to a warm stew or soup waiting for you in the crockpot?? A crockpot is on my list for this Christmas and I am already planning all the recipes I can make in there. Hello chili!

Winter boots: Isn’t it just the worst when snow sneaks into your shoes leaving your feet wet and cold?? I say no more! This year I am buying proper winter boots and keeping my feet happy. I have my eye on these winter boots, cute and warm, just what I need.

Fur Hat: One thing I never leave the house with during the winter, a hat. Having cold ears is just miserable to me so a warm hat, that stays on during a wind storm, is necessary.

Body Butter: Now I have always been told moisturizing is important and that your skin gets dry in the winter but I never fully understood the need for lotion until moving to Iceland. Holy dry skin! My nightly ritually now includes a thick layer of body butter, it is necessary to avoid alligator skin this winter.

Fluffy Blanket: Curling up under a fluffy warm blanket on a cold winter day is just the best. H thinks I have a slight obsession with blankets, I think I just enjoy being warm, the debate continues.

Once I have all these items I say bring on winter Iceland! But please bring summer this year too!

    Great picks! Having a Kindle abroad has been an absolute game changer- and this is coming from someone who formerly harbored a hate of e-books. All of those things seem pretty essential for an Icelandic winter though. AE makes such cute coats! If only shipping to Europe didn’t cost an arm and a leg…..

      What type of kindle do you have?? I am looking at the just basic option. I have steered clear of ebooks but am now looking into the option. AE does make sure cute coats, I am hoping to find one while I am home for Christmas since shipping to Iceland is way to expensive!

        I’ve got a Paperwhite (which I think might be the basic option now?) and it definitely does the job. It’s not in color like the other fancier models, but when you’re reading a book, who really needs color? :)
        I was looking at AE’s Cyber Monday sales a bit ago and was so excited they shipped internationally until I saw that the shipping alone would be over $50. Wah, wah.

    When I moved from Australia to London in the middle of winter I had to get myself set up with warm things pretty quick! I love those gel packs that heat up when you snap them. Although they only last 10-15 minutes, you can re use them and they’re great for when your hands feel like they’re about to get frostbite!

      Yes! Those gel packs are the best! I brought a few with me to Iceland last winter, I will have to stock up when I am home.

    Have you heard of minky couture? It might be a Utah thing but I know they have an online shop. They are THE softest blankets ever! My mom got them for my younger siblings and I’ve been dying for my own since! Also, I love games. My favorites right now are seven wonders and ticket to ride Europe edition :)

      I have not heard of it but these blankets sound amazing! I will be looking them up for sure when I am back in Oregon. Also your candy is on its way, I hope it makes it to you and its not broken!

    I can’t even imagine how cold it must get in winter in Iceland! Love all your winter must haves. I definitely needed/wanted all those last year in our cold Canadian winter!!

    That coat looks so warm! I remember when we were there in late November, I was seriously not prepared. Though the temperatures didn’t look bad before we left, wow, 40 degrees in Iceland is more like 20 degrees anywhere else. The wind was so cold, my eyes were literally watering the whole 4 days we were there!!!!

      Ugh yes the wind is so cold! Some days it will be so nice outside and then the wind comes and freezes you! I need an Icelandic wind proof coat, if such a thing even exists!

    Cards Against Humanity is always a good time! I just pulled my Sorel boots out of storage. We’ve been having really nice weather, but we’re getting more days that remind me this isn’t going to last. My skin is already dry to begin with so it really hits me hard in winter and I love The Body Shop body butters. And I made a big ol’ pot of chili last night that I’m about to warm up for lunch. Whoop!! Great picks :)

    Winter has meant so many different things, from rainy, windy London to biting, bitter cold in Chicago, but no matter where I am, my winter must-have is a good selection of really warm, sturdy socks. I get really cold feet, so started buying hiking/backpacking socks from REI a few years ago, because even the winter weight socks in department stores weren’t enough. It makes a huge difference for me both in terms of comfort and general cozy feelings. Don’t care if they’re all unfashionable grey hikers. I’m never going back. :)

    Such a good list of how to survive the winter up north! My friends have been having lots of game nights recently because it definitely brightens the mood when you need to hole up inside. Also proper clothing is so important! I also learned from my first year in Finland what I needed to have this year. You have inspired me to get a crockpot though! I wonder if there are any Finnish brands in Iceland, but the Kuoma snow boots are the best. They aren’t very cute so I use them only to walk my dog but they are definitely a winter must-have for me :)

      Game nights really do help on these cold winter nights. A crockpot will hopefully be under my Christmas tree! Thanks for the suggestion! I will have to see if they have those snow boots here, good winter boots are just a must.

    This is like an exact list of my must haves as well, I’ve learnt fast :P Cards against humanity is such a good choice.
    But also hot chocolate and marshmallows, nothing better than warming up with a nice steamy mug after braving the weather outside (we go through so much)!

    I highly recommend the Northface city coat. It’s like a big sleeping bag that definitely helps in the winter!

    You know what? I love me a cold winter - that’s the only kind I know obviously. I just love to cuddle up into a nice blanket, reading and enjoying warm soups, etc. And I love even more walking through snow and being so wrapped up that I’m not too cold!

    I ordered a similar coat from Madewell in black and I’ve probably ordered a total of 10 sorel boots including the cinnamon ones above… All in multiple sizes and colors obvi, but I am out of control!
