10 Surprising Icelandic Facts II

Before I moved to Iceland, before I met H for that matter, I knew little to nothing about Iceland. Now I can’t get enough of Icelandic facts! A few months ago I shared a list of 10 Icelandic facts, today I am adding to this list with 10 more facts, so read on to get to know more about the land of fire and ice

1. It is often said that more than half of Icelanders believe in elves. It is up for debate as to how many Icelanders actually believe in elves, but you often hear stories of roads not being built somewhere because it would disrupt the elves, so maybe they believe more than they think.

One of my favorite stories about the Icelandic elves is from H’s mom. Her family has a summer house in the countryside and since she was a little girl her family believed that elves lived in the rocks and so they would not cut the grass around that area to avoid disturbing the elves.

2. Beer was banned in Iceland until 1 March, 1989. Maybe this is the reason why Icelanders drink so much beer! The 1st of March is now called “Beer Day” where you can find many Icelanders participating in bar crawls.

3. It is against the law to own a pet snake, lizard or turtle. This law was put into place in the early 1990s after a turtle infected its owners with Salmonella paratyphi B. As someone with a major fear of snakes I have no problem with this law.

4. The star of the Free Willy movies, Keiko, was captured near Iceland. He went on to live in the Oregon aquarium (where I visited him several times as a kid) before returning back to Icelandic waters.

5. Iceland is home to 8-10 million puffins and over half the worlds puffin population breeds in Iceland. Must be all those stunning landscapes that make Iceland so romantic:) I have yet to see one of these cute guys but it is on my list!

6. The popular app Quizup was created by the Iceland based company Plain Vanilla. I have even met several of the companies employees, I only mentioned the fact that I was obsessed with Quizup a few times during our conversation:)

7. A spoonful of lysi (fish oil) is taken daily starting from a young age. If you ever have a cold, are feeling tired or just looking pale, you must not be drinking your lysi. I am still working on getting use to the flavor.

8. Christmas is celebrated with not just Santa but 13 Yule Lads that bring children gifts every night for the 13 days before Christmas.

9. The water in Iceland is one of the purest in the world. The cold water from the tap is pure spring water from glacier runoff and is not even chlorinated. Trust me, the water in Iceland is the best you will ever taste!

10. The worlds first democratically elected female head of state was Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. She was president of Iceland from 1980-1996 making her also the longest serving elected female head of state of any country.

Bonus fact: Iceland was just ranked number 1 in gender equality based on the Global Gender Gap report for the 6th year in a row!

Question of the Day?
What is a fun fact from your country?

Apart from the lysi, Iceland seems like the absolute coolest country in the world. I am so desperate to come and visit!

Two cool facts about Australia - Wifi was invented here by the CSIRO and we have the biggest population of Greek people in Melbourne outside of Athens!

How interesting! I love learning these types of facts about other countries! Thanks for sharing Jade :)

  • http://bailiehemborg.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

I love the idea of 13 days of presents! The drinking water in Sweden is also so wonderful and I love how cold it comes out of the tap in winter!
A Swedish fact is most people have a given name, a first name, a middle name and then a last name and usually go by the first name. So when Fredrik went to school in America all the school papers and California ID had Dan his given name first and so when we went places and he had to show ID they would say ok Dan and I had to try so hard not to laugh everytime!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes, the water is the best! How interesting, that is so many names as well!

  • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

Very interesting! I wonder what’s in the fish oil to make it so healthy, besides surely omega 3’s and such. You really are getting into being an Icelander if you’ve tried it, I think! The beer fact still astounds me… I have to also wonder why it was banned in the first place. Seems so strange.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is said to boost the immune system among other things, Icelanders believe it is the only way to stay healthy through the winter, I am still debating it! I am still not sure why the ban was put in the first place either.

  • Cassandra

How interesting! I was especially fascinating by the celebration of a “beer day” after learning that the drink was banned for so long. Intriguing post!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know, when I first heard that I thought it was so interesting how long beer was banned in Iceland!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

Haha I LOVE Quizup! And I can’t believe that beer was banned! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love Quizup! I was totally like so do you guys need some new category ideas or questions of the Harry Potter round ha.

  • http://sophieinclogs.com Sophie

How weird about the fish oil! Also interesting to know that Iceland is number one in gender equality :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I will say my hair and nails never look better than when I am good about taking the fish oil! And yay for gender equality!

  • http://mariellegreen.com/ Marielle

Haha! I love that bit about the elves. And it’s so cool that your tap water is spring water - the tap in China was just not safe to drink unless it was boiled, and it really freaked me out!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

When I travel and don’t have access to water from the tap it really makes me miss Iceland so much!

  • http://bluehairinbelgium.blogspot.be/ Kerri

Oooh, I’m all about interesting facts! Illegal to have a pet snake? I’ve not heard that before.

Oooh fun fact from Belgium… can I say they don’t have fun (or is that too mean?). OK, real fact: 7th Dec is SinterKlaas day, which is (imo, just like Santa, only creepier), the story of a man, who came from Spain to give the children their presents, he travels by horse and has these helpers which are called Zwarte Piet, which are little brown people with black curly hair. Apparently they are black from the chimney sweeping.

The weirdest part, is at this time, people will dress up as the zwarte piet, and it’s basically, white children, painting themselves brown and it’s very very odd and somewhat racist imo.

Let’s not forget the if you are naughty Sinterklaas takes you away in a bag…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

How interesting! Sounds a bit similar to the Icelandic Christmas elves, they sound totally creepy to me and use to be used as a scaring tactic to children saying if they were bad the elves would take them away, yikes!

  • Beth

Iceland sounds like such a great place to live! Especially now that they have beer. ;)
What was the beef with beer before, that it was outlawed??

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am honestly not to sure what the reason was behind the beer ban, I need to do some more research because no one seems to have a set answer for me!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

You saw Free Willy in person?! I’m jealous!! I loved that movie as a kid!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha yes, I totally had a free willy tshirt and the stuffed animal version after I visited the aquarium.

  • http://inkandadventure.blogspot.tw/ Jamie | ink + adventure

Iceland sounds pretty awesome to me, double hi-five for equality and clean water! the water in Taiwan is not safe to drink out of the tap, so everyone has to buy filtered water. this obviously generates a lot more plastic waste, so the recycling laws here are really strict.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

When I travel I really miss the water in Iceland and always try and not take the fact that we have such pure water easily accessible for granted. That is good that they have recycling laws to try and help with all the plastic waste. Do you cook with tap water or do you still need filtered water?

      • http://inkandadventure.blogspot.tw/ Jamie | ink + adventure

if I’m boiling the water first to cook something in it [potatoes, pasta] I will, but for making coffee/tea, a sauce, or something that will soak up the water [beans, rice] I always use filtered. I think part of the problem is old pipes, part is that they just don’t treat the water as much as they do elsewhere.

I love reading these posts from you about the culture! The elves thing totally cracks me up. Are there any pictures of these elves? ;-) What changed in 1989? I would be totally down with 13 days of presents before Christmas!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes, they have characters for the Christmas elves and during December you see them popping up all over town! I am honestly not sure what changed in 1989, I am on a mission to find out.

  • http://themountainrambles.wordpress.com/ Sarah Grace

I use to take a tablespoon of of cod liver oil daily for years because my doctor recommended to me for a variety of reasons (it can act as an anti-inflammatory, help ward off depression, improve vascular strength). I had to stop it a month before my surgery because it does thin your blood if you were someone like me taking it regularly. Look for the oil that is naturally flavored with lemon - it will make it more palatable.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I actually tried the lemon flavored one but prefer the non flavored lysi over it. Now that the winter darkness is coming I am trying to remember to take it every morning, my co-workers even have brought there lysi bottles into work now!

  • http://www.amyandthegreatworld.com/ AmyMacWorld

yayyyy more Icelandic facts! I LOVE these :) I’ve heard of the elves thing…I love that there are even reports of roads being closed because of the possibility of elves! Also, I didn’t know about the gender equality thing-GO Iceland!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes, the gender equality is huge here in Iceland, I love it!

  • Björg Rós Guðjónsdóttir

I love your posts about Iceland! It’s great to see how expats experience the country :) However, I would like to point out (and try to prevent some possible upset stomachs!) that glacial melt water/runoff is full of “rock flour, or glacial flour”, that consists of fine-grained, silt-sized particles of rock… and more. That’s how you can tell whether a river or a brook is a spring-fed river or a melt-water/glacier river, and whether it is safe to drink: Glacial melt water containing silt will have a greyish-brown and sometimes milky color. Spring-fed, running water will be clear. Please don’t drink the brown water :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes I would hope no one starts drinking brown water. This was just a statement from several sources online saying that in Iceland the water source is mainly from the glaciers, Thanks for all the information :)

  • Elora

Interesting! I’m really fascinated at what you said about them possibly believing in elves. That’s interesting…I love hearing “stories” from different places, of the locals holding certain beliefs, etc. Once can learn so much from another culture. I would say Iceland is now on my list, but EVERYWHERE is on my list. But now it’s now specifically listed. ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I so understand what you mean, I definitely have one of those Everywhere lists! The Icelandic culture is really interesting to learn about, so fun learning from new cultures!
