ABC’s of Winter

Reykjavik is covered in a blanket of snow, my Christmas lights are hung and my winter hibernation is in full swing. Winter is officially here and that means it is time for…..

Winter in Iceland

All the smells. Cookies fresh out of the oven, candles, Christmas dinner, and the best smell, a fresh Christmas tree.

Blankets. I love a good fluffy blanket to curl up with. Nothing better than a cozy night in curled up in my favorite blanket watching movies.

Christmas cookies! I have a Christmas cookie exchange coming up this weekend and I can’t wait to sample a bunch of tasty treats.

Decorations! Last year H and I made a bunch of our own Christmas decorations and it made me so happy putting them out this year. Something so satisfying about making your own decorations, or watching someone else make them, either way I love them.

Iceland Christmas

Elf. This is one of my favorite Christmas movies and it isn’t the Christmas season until Elf has been watched a dozen times. Santa’s coming!

Food! From Christmas buffets in Iceland to Christmas dinner with my family in Oregon ’tis the season to eat some delicious food.

Give awesome gifts. I love finding the perfect gift for someone and watching there reaction when they open it. The challenge is not letting my excitement get the best of me and telling them what I bought them before they open it! This happens often.

Holiday markets. I love shopping at the holiday market in Eugene and can’t wait to take H there as well.

Indoor activities. The winter weather makes me want to stay bundled up inside enjoying my favorite indoor activities like reading, baking, and binge watching my favorite shows. I may throw in a game night or two to keep up my social life, maybe.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Christmas music is already being played on repeat in our house after I discovered a holiday music channel on our tv. H is not as thrilled, that may have to do with the fact that I insist on singing along (totally out of tune, singing is not my talent).

Keep studying my Icelandic. I have been feeling really discouraged lately with my language skills and have not been practicing basically at all. Signing up for a class at a new school after the new year is on my must do list. Hopefully by the time Spring has arrived my Icelandic vocabulary will advanced pass that of a two year old.

Lights. Christmas lights just make me happy! My parents house is so beautiful with all its Christmas lights on, I can’t wait to take H home, he is in for a real treat!

There is no place like home for the holidays #twomoreweeks!! #cantwaittoseemyfamily #byfamilyimeanmydog #expatlife

Mother daughter time. I am a totally mommas girl and a whole year without my mom has been rough. I already know I am going to cry when I see my mom! Nothing better than getting a hug from your mom.

New Years! Last year I had an amazing time ringing in the New Year in Iceland, while there won’t be the crazy Reykjavik fireworks at midnight I will get to be with all my family and friends, a good time guaranteed.

Open fires. My parents have the best fireplace and I am planning on spending many hours in front of it curled up with Azora and a good book.

Puppy kisses! I am counting down the minutes until I get to see Azora!

Azora KissesWe’re still working on mastering the kiss thing.

Quality time with my family. Going home for Christmas is the highlight of this winter and I can’t wait to be home spending time with everyone.

Reykjavik Light Festival. Last year H and I attend the light festival and I loved it. Such a fun way to brighten up these dark winter days.

Snow days. We just got our first real snow of winter and everything looks so beautiful. I love snow, until Christmas is over, then I am ready for summer.

Traditions. My family is big on traditions and I love all the Christmas traditions we have. Last year I enjoyed learning about H’s Christmas traditions and this year I am looking forward to sharing my family traditions with him.

Ugly sweater parties! I love a good ugly sweater party and am looking forward to the two on our calendar this holiday season!

Ugly Sweater PartyI go all out for ugly sweater parties!

Venture into the countryside for a weekend getaway. H and I are planning a weekend trip to a countryside cabin this winter. Soaking in a hot tub watching the Northern Lights dance above, sounds like a magical time to me.

Wine! What is the holidays without a bottle glass or two of wine? A wine tasting trip with my family is on the schedule while we are in Oregon over the holidays and I can’t wait. Nothing like family bonding over some delicious wine!

Xcited for my trip home! 8 more days until H and I head back to the states and I can hardly contain my excited (if you hadn’t already picked up on that with the several mentions of my trip home in this post). Three weeks back home with my family, it is going to be the highlight of this winter!

Yell for the Icelandic handball team. This winter I am determined to make it to a handball game and see what this sport is all about!

Zzzzz. After all the fun I know I am going to have back home I will need to catch up on some sleep! My winter hibernation continues.

Okay my ABC’s of winter is more an ABC’s of Christmas, its just the best time of the year. Thanks again to Amanda for the idea, head over and check her ABC’s of winter out and all the fun things she will be up to in London!

Question of the Day?
What are your favorite indoor winter activities? What are you looking forward to this winter?

I love curling up by my parent’s fireplace and reading a book. I head home as well in a week for Christmas and can’t wait to be surrounded by snow. Because to be honest, Christmas isn’t Christmas unless we have snow in Michigan! Love this list :) xo

I know we won’t have snow at home in Oregon and I have always wanted a white Christmas. Of course Iceland is now covered in snow so I am going to miss out again on a white Christmas darn. But it is going to be so amazing being home for the holidays. Have the best time with your family!

I should really make a must do list… my to do list never seems to get any smaller haha. I always have to stop myself from telling people what presents I got for them… I recently gave away the surprise I had planned for my boyfriend’s birthday. Hopefully I can keep my mouth shut for Christmas :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am with you on this! I have the hardest time keeping it a secret what I bought everyone for Christmas. I have already told my sister on accident about the cute outfit I bought her for Christmas, darn!

  • http://www.madetotravelblog.com/ Hannah Webb

I’m so excited for you to spend Christmas with your family!! Its so perfect you get the best of both worlds, enjoy the Icelandic Christmas fun before and then still get a family Christmas!

      • http://www.madetotravelblog.com/ Hannah Webb

No its just the 2 of us, and a whole duck for dinner… never send your boyfriend to do christmas grocery shopping by himself haha

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha I hope your whole duck was amazing!

My boyfriend and I are heading on a little cabin getaway before Christmas and I can’t wait to curl up by the fire with some wine! Homemade Christmas decorations are the best. I love pulling mine out each year and thinking about the story behind each one. Love your Christmas sweater :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Awe that sounds amazing! Cabin getaways are just the best way to relax!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The holidays really are the best time of the year! Are you going home for the holidays this year??

  • http://www.lifeinprogress.ca/ Kathy@Vodka and Soda

i’ve watched elf 345318961234 times already!! “YOU SIT ON A THRONE OF LIES!” ahhahaha one of the best parts of the movie.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha, so many awesome lines in that movie!

  • http://meetatthebarre.blogspot.com/ Amanda Elizabeth

Ohhhhh now tell me did that sweater come with the gold tinsel or wast that added? Can I tell you whenever we have those parties I just shop in my moms closet. She has some doozies from the 80s still hanging on!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It totally came with the gold tinsel, I found it at a thrift shop and it was beyond perfect. I often have used my moms sweaters as well, we just pretend she didn’t really wear those out in public and bought them with the thought that in twenty years her daughters would need them for ugly sweater parties ha.

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

hahaha that sweater! Love it! I’m looking for a christmas sweater right now and I want it to be cute but kind of tacky too! It would feel just right!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am so bummed I left that sweater at home it is a gem!

  • http://megancstroup.blogspot.com/ Megan C. Stroup

Yes, love your sweater! I try to buy an ugly sweater at least once a year now - and I definitely wear them on normal days, too. Whoops! Haha.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Megan! I forgot my ugly sweater back at home and nothing I have found here in Iceland can top it!

  • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

Mostly I’m looking forward to my week off after the holidays, after my family has left and the bf and I can just relax and watch TV :)

I just enjoy winter as it’s a perfect excuse to hibernate!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Winter really is the perfect excuse to hibernate?? Any tv shows your loving? We are in need of a new series to binge watch.

      • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

At the moment we are watching Once Upon A Time, it’s nice and relaxing to watch, not the greatest story but we tend to watch TV over dinner so we pick things that don’t need too much concentration haha.

Supernatural is quite good if you’re into things about ghosts and other kinds of monsters. Hannibal was a good show, but not sure I recommend watching that over dinner!

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love watching Once Upon A Time as well, it is a fun show to just have on and zone out on! Thanks for the recommendations.

Stumbled upon your blog by googling ‘Iceland Christmas Blog’ (just in case you were wondering. And I’m now adding it to my regular blog list. Helps that I’m hoping to spend a week in Iceland next December!

I love this A-Z list, wishing you all the best for your trip back home! About half the list would be simliar for me, the other half wouldn’t work. I’m in Brisbane, Australia where it’s 30 degrees (86 F) and we’ve had a few weeks of hot humid weather with big lightning and hail storms each week. Not really the weather for ugly sweaters!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Iceland is amazing in December, that is as long as your okay with snow and chilly temperatures! My boyfriends sister was just in Brisbane a few weeks ago and was telling us about the crazy storms!

  • http://www.teamstarnes.com Alexandra @ Team Starnes

    gimme that puppy now! :)

I can’t wait to get some puppy kisses from her!

So many of these completely describe winter for me as well! Elf happens to be my favorite Christmas movie and I have a family tradition to watch it every year on Thanksgiving! I also finally invested in a warm fuzzy blanket for this winter- because let’s face it, there’s nothing better! And ugly sweaters- I’ll be having an ugly sweater bar crawl with my friends soon :D My favorite indoor winter activity is to nap next to my parent’s woodfire curled up next to my pup! The smells, the warmth and having family close by- nothing beats that! Hope Christmas is a good one!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

An ugly sweater bar crawl sounds like a blast! They have a santa bar crawl in my hometown where everyone wears these tacky santa outfits ha. Nothing betting than curling up next to the fire with a cute pup by your side! Hope you have an awesome Christmas as well!
