Step Back In Time At Árbær

Every wish you could stroll the small streets of the town you are visiting and experience life as it used to be? Pick up sweet treats at the ice cream shop, stop by the local post office to send off a letter and make small talk with everyone you meet, peek through the windows of the blacksmith to see what he was making, and wave to the friendly neighbors sitting out on their porches knitting. Doesn’t it just sound so simple and blissful?

If you are like me and think experiencing life as it use to be would be an awesome time well your in luck, this can happen with a visit to the Árbæjarsafn Open Air Museum here in Reykjavik!

Located a short drive outside of the center of Reykjavik, Árbær was once a busy little farm, but since 1957 it now serves the purpose of creating an authentic historical setting to give visitors a feel for the lifestyle in Iceland in the past.

The museum is built around the old farm however many of the houses have been moved from the city center of Reykjavik. With a town square, phone booth, farm houses and a school it really feels like stepping back in time into the middle of a charming little town.

During the summer months the Árbæjarsafn Open Air Museum is a buzz with exhibitions and events. Visitors can take guided tours to learn more about the history of the village and the lifestyle during that time period.

To complete the feel of truly stepping back in time employees are dressed in historical attire and carry on activities that would happen in everyday life during that time period. You will see people tending their animals, ladies knitting on the front porch, townsfolk greeting each other in the town square and men working in their workshops, a happy little town.

Sadly, when H and I visited there a few weeks ago we were only greeted to a frozen empty farm and dark clouds headed our way. Still we decided to do a little exploring of our own while H attempted to give me a run down of the history of life back then.

We will definitely be returning this summer so I can get a proper tour with the correct facts (sorry H I know you tried). But really I just want to return so I can get the full ambiance of this place with all the workers mingling about in their historical attire. The perfect way to step back in time while on a visit to Iceland!

Question of the Day?

Are you interested in learning about the past? What time period would you like to time travel to?

When I hear people say ‘oh, the good time were the good ol’ days’ I’m like noooooooo. And this museum reminded me on how things used to be. I’m not saying that we are doing better now, but things got so much easier with that being said I will love to travel to the future! I would love to see how is the human race doing once Global Warming has passed and we destroyed all the forests and nature (super sarcasm but maybe sadly true).

I couldn’t imagine living in Iceland with out the comforts of today, no thank you! And I agree with you, seeing how Global Warming is handled in the future would be very interesting.

I love stepping back into times past by visiting places with such amazing history. It looks so authentic and can just imagine how wonderful it’d be in the summer with all the workers out in their historical attire! It looks like you and H had the whole place to yourselves - how lovely! xx

I love open air museums! Sounds like it will be really cool to visit in the summer. I can’t believe people used to live in those sod houses! I definitely wouldn’t want to time travel to that time, at least in Iceland (or Canada for that matter) haha. I’d much rather continue enjoy the comforts of indoor heating!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

They are a lot of fun to visit and get a feel for how things used to be!

Part of the library in town has a museum like this but inside and Fredrik did the same thing and then just started waving his hands and going you know they did stuff and ummm it was cold and dark!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha our men and their historical knowledge :) Cold and dark is a pretty good way to sum up things though!

I love love visiting places with a history. My parents live near Wiliiamsburg in VA and I love to go there on a late December evening - it feels more special when there is no one around!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That does sound so special, especially when you have the place to yourself!

How cool! I love the sod houses!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

They are really neat to see just out in the countryside! Especially when the grass is bright green.

That open air museum looks awesome, even in the winter!

I have a soft spot for historical sites- especially when the people working there are dressed in historical attire. Fact- I had a childhood birthday party at a historical site and made my mom sew a turn of the century dress for me. Because I’m cool like that ;).

I can’t wait to see photos from your summer tour when everything comes alive.

this is so cute! although I’m sad to learn that ALL of Iceland doesn’t still look like this ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

:) I am glad I do not have to live in a sod house but the charm of the town is more than welcome to take over Iceland :)

What! Look at that tiny little gas station! Is that one pump I see? Teehee, so cute. I haven’t seen snow all winter, which is rare for me, so seeing all this makes me a bit nostalgic—winters are cuddling under covers as the snow falls outside, not sweating in 80 degree weather!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Isn’t that gas station so cute! I like having the seasons and a winter spent cuddling under the covers. But I am more than ready for no more winter and some warm weather!

    This is lovely!
Museums are honestly some of my favorite places to visit - learning about the past is so fun and when they have people dressed like the old times…even better! My favorite is the open-air museum in Aarhus, Denmark. It’s called Den Gamle By (The Old Town) and it’s the perfect little setting - you can go into their houses and cafes and everything works and the people there are all dressed up…ahhh, this post brought back so many memories! Haha!

Can’t wait to see pictures from your next travels! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Wow that museum in Denmark sounds lovely! Adding it to my list for when I finally make it to Denmark!

so cute! I love the colors of the houses at the top, especially against the snow. I’m sure it will be nice in summer too :)

So pretty! Can’t wait to see what it’ll look like in the summer! The little sod house reminds me of Little House on the Prairie! I love when groups share history and use it as a learning tool!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am already planning my trip back this summer, I think it would be so fun to see all the workers hustling about the town in their attire and learning more about the history of the way of life.

I just love how beautiful Icelandic architecture is! And as I have a masters in history, I’m all about living museums like this one!
