One Hectic Summer

Things around Unlocking Kiki have been a bit slow lately. By a bit slow I mean non-existent. Lately I have been lucky to have enough spare time to scan my Instagram feed let alone write a blog post. I have a feeling the rest of August is going be quite hectic, I am already looking forward to September when things calm down a bit!

And with that little explanation out of the way (because I know you all where so very concerned as to where I have been) here is a little update on what has been going on here in Iceland the past few weeks.

Croatia
Everyday I wake up wishing I could be back in Croatia! Sigh. Moving on to what is actually happening.

…Last week I started back at work after having five weeks off. You would think I felt nice and refreshed and ready to get back to the grind. Well I think the last word I would use to describe how I felt last week was refreshed. Basically back to reality hit me hard in the face and I barely made it into bed before falling asleep. Hopefully this week will a bit easier and I will start getting back into the swing of things.

…Of course right when H and I have to get back to work is when the summer sun decides to make its debut. We have been taking full advantage of the sunshine though with evening bike rides, trips to the swimming pool, and drinks in the backyard while I dominate in the backyard game Kubbur. H and his brother like to claim it is beginners luck, after a week though I think it is time for them to recognize pure talent.

Bike yardsMy favorite pool in Reykjavik, Vesturbæjarlaug. If you are here visiting I recommend spending a few hours at this pool, you may even see Björk lounging in the hot pools next you, I have a few times!

Backyard drinks
It is always happy hour in our backyard

Kubber
Is that not the face of a winner right there! I don’t mess around when it comes to backyard games.

….The time has finally came for me to start looking into tickets to fly home for Christmas. This is the first time I will be going back home since I moved to Iceland in October. I am beyond excited to see my family and friends Azora again and have been searching the internet this past week looking for the best deal. Christmas can’t come soon enough!

…After hearing about the awesome Gay Pride Day celebration that Reykjavik has every summer I finally got to experience it for myself. I have never seen so many people in the downtown Reykjavik area, the day was 10 times bigger than Iceland’s Independence Day in June! My favorite part of the celebration was the parade full of colorful floats, fun music, and of course amazing costumes! I really love the equal rights for all Iceland stands for, it is a great place to live. And any parade that has floats shooting purple confetti is amazing in my book!

Gay Prides Day

…As if I don’t have enough going on this month already I have signed myself up to run a women’s club with a friend of mine. I will now be responsible for planning events for the Girls Gone International Reykjavik, Iceland group and I can’t wait to get started and meet some new ladies. If you have never heard of Girls Gone International look them up to see if there is a group in your area! It is an excellent way to meet ladies from all over the world living in your area. Now any ideas for some fun events I should plan?

… H and I are determined to make the most out of the rest of the “summer” we have left. We have hiking trips, blueberry picking, half marathons and outdoor festivals filling up our calendar for the next month, I am not ready for winter to come! Last weekend our plans took us on a 12 hour adventure around the Landmannalaugar area, one of the most beautiful areas I have visited in Iceland. I have lots of wonderful photos to share from that day, including tips to find Iceland’s hidden gem, but for now here is a teaser photo from our hike at Landmannalaugar.

Once I get my feet back under me I have so many wonderful posts lined up to share with you all! And more of the beautiful Croatia is coming your way soon! Stay tuned.

9th Month in Iceland by the Numbers

This post was suppose to go up while I was in Croatia so it is a bit late. I am still recovering from my trip but will be back next week with lots of beautiful pictures of Croatia!

This past month has been filled with more rain than should be allowed in the middle of summer. I never would have thought I would be wearing my winter coat in July! But don’t feel to bad, I am currently enjoying the beautiful beaches of Croatia as this post is going up so I am finally getting my sunshine fix.

Without further ado lets get to my 9th month in Iceland!

13.1 Miles Ran
Midnight Sun Run

It has been on my bucket list to run a race abroad and I couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful place to do it at!

First World Cup experience

This video cracks me up and is basically how I feel when watching soccer, someone is all fake falling down!

Three delicious lunches at Gló
Lunch, Glo
This is my favorite place to grab lunch in Reykjavik, I love all the fresh ingredients they use and have never had a bad meal here.

Two trips to Stofan cafe
Blogging
Speaking of favorite places in Reykjavik, I just love this cafe. It has such a cozy atmosphere, like you are hanging out in someones living room, well outdated living room but still it is great.

First time sending someone flowers
Mom's Birthday Flowers
Ordering a flower deliver order online was a new experience to me, I am just glad they made it on time. A very happy birthday to my beautiful Mom!

Five trips to the libraryReykjavik Library
All of these trips where to try and find the third book in the Divergent series. On my fifth time I jumped up and down like a little kid when I saw the book sitting on the shelf. And imagine my disappointment when I was told I couldn’t check the book out because it was on hold.

Two minute walk from my house to see this sunset
Reykjavik Sunset
If it was not cloudy outside around 11 pm you could find me walking to the sea near my house to catch the beautiful sunsets. This night it looked like the clouds were bright red cotton balls, so beautiful!

Three am wake up call
Iceland Planes
It was a rough day of travel but my excitement for our trip got me through!

18 hours in London
London
This was my first time in London and it was an amazing day. A longer trip back is definitely needed!

Two days exploring Dubrovnik
Croatia, Red Keep
As major Game of Throne fans H and I were running around like excited kids. The old city of Dubrovnik was beautiful and we loved exploring the little streets!

One hour ferry ride to Korčula
Korcula, Croatia
Our second stop in Croatia, the beautiful island of Korčula.

Croatia was amazing and I can’t wait to share our trip with you all. This month may of had a rainy start but it sure has ended on a sunny note! And what better way to start my 10th month in abroad than on a beautiful beach in Croatia.

Question of the Day?
Where are you traveling to this summer?

The Day Sydney Was Painted Red

Welcome to Travel Tuesday!

Today I am stealing H’s photos and sharing his experience during a dust storm in Sydney, Australia.

Red Dust Storm
In 2009 Sydney turned red over night as strong winds carried dust from the east of Australia, a very rare and incredible occurrence. When H told me about it and showed me his pictures my first thought was, I would have been terrified if I woke up to this! H said he had woke up around 5 am to and when he looked out his window and saw all the red dust he had no idea what was going on. Of course this didn’t stop him from rushing outside to take these amazing pictures.

H said that after a few hours a lot of the dust has blown away so the color wasn’t as bright, but it was quite the clean up for the city. It may have been messy but it looks beautiful!

Lessons Learned From Blogging

After reading Margo’s wonderful post about why she blogs it got me thinking about my blog and what it means to me. I started my blog a month after I moved to Iceland as a journal for myself to remember this time in my life and as a place for my family and friends to follow along with my adventures abroad. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started blogging!

A whole new world has now opened up to me and my blog has turned into so much more than just a journal. I have found a community that I can completely relate to on this crazy expat adventure, learned about cultures from all over the world through my blogging friends posts, and gained confidence in knowing that my abroad meltdowns are totally normal and my blogging friends don’t think I am crazy (at least I think so). In addition to all the wonderful connections I have made through my blog writing in my little space has taught me so many things about myself.

I am Creative
I always wanted to be that person that would come up with great ideas, make amazing crafts and tackle DIY projects for fun. My craft skill level though has never been my strongest quality and outside of writing, which I have always loved to do, I would have never considered myself a creative person.

Writing for my blog has challenged me to come up with new post ideas several times each week, create a blog design, and edit my pictures, even adding text over some of them. Reflecting back on this I have realized, I am really creative!

BloggingBlogging at your favorite local cafe is the best way to blog!

Maybe it is the confidence I have gained from blogging but my creativity has pushed into other aspects of my life as well. As one who use to avoid crafts I am now the one pinning craft ideas and actually doing the crafts I pin! From Christmas decorations to creating new recipes and making an awesome birthday basket for H I am starting to finally consider myself a creative person.

Don’t hide from my feelings
When I am feeling homesick or overwhelmed with my surroundings I tend to push the feelings away and not acknowledge them. I am notorious at avoiding how I feel. Before I used to just add on the work shifts or plans with friends, but now that I have so much more free time hiding from my feelings is not as easy.

FamilyWho wouldn’t miss this adorable bunch!

Blogging has really made me face my feelings head on and deal with them instead of running from them. I can’t write about how wonderful things are if I don’t truly feel that way. I have found myself admitting I am homesick or uncomfortable many times when writing a post. This has helped me express these feelings and get them off my chest before it is just too much. So thanks to you all who read those not so happy post and come back with supportive comments!

Being outside of my comfort zone can be incredibly rewarding
When I reflect back on my time in Iceland so far the most memorable moments to me are the ones when I was completely out of my comfort zone. Like all those unsuccessful friend dates I have gone on, uncomfortable events where I am the only non-Icelandic person in the room, or when I interviewed for my current job, being completely out of my comfort zone has brought some amazing things my way.

Iceland, Reykjavik, Sun Voyager, Mt. EsjanI am finally learning to embrace the uncomfortable feeling and just go with it!

I give blogging some credit in helping get me out the door. Once you say your going to do something you have to follow through with it and what better way to be held accountable than to write it in your blog! And you know what, I love getting out there and trying new things and being able to share it with you all! No matter how things work out I know I can come back to my blog and share my failures, embarrassing stories, and exciting experiences with you all and get the support to continue putting myself out there.

Photography is fun!
It used to always be H asking me if I wanted to take a picture and I was the one avoiding the pictures because I didn’t want to deal with the awkward posing and fake smiles. Taking the photo myself, pausing to find the perfect shot, it just wasn’t in the cards for me.

IMG_3904
Now I am the one taking the extra time to get the perfect shot, even creating my own photo shoots for my food! I am constantly asking H to take a picture of me jumping in the air or re-take a photo 10 times because I need the perfect shot for my blog. And you know what I love it! I can’t wait to get a new camera and take my photography further.

Be Present
Instead of just going somewhere and going through the motions I am now making sure I am really present in the moment. I want to remember all the emotions I felt and what I was experiencing so I can truly capture the experience. Coming to this little space of mine to write about what I am experiencing has helped me really reflect on my daily life outside of just the big moments.

Winter in IcelandAs simple winter walk home captured in all its beauty. Enjoy the little things, they are some of the best memories.

Starting my blog 7 months ago at a time when I was going through a major life change is one of the best decisions I have made. The benefits blogging has brought me are priceless and I know they will only continue to grow over time. So to all my bloggers out there, people may think we are a bit crazy but this little community of ours is amazing!
