The Day Sydney Was Painted Red

Welcome to Travel Tuesday!

Today I am stealing H’s photos and sharing his experience during a dust storm in Sydney, Australia.

Red Dust Storm
In 2009 Sydney turned red over night as strong winds carried dust from the east of Australia, a very rare and incredible occurrence. When H told me about it and showed me his pictures my first thought was, I would have been terrified if I woke up to this! H said he had woke up around 5 am to and when he looked out his window and saw all the red dust he had no idea what was going on. Of course this didn’t stop him from rushing outside to take these amazing pictures.

H said that after a few hours a lot of the dust has blown away so the color wasn’t as bright, but it was quite the clean up for the city. It may have been messy but it looks beautiful!

Question of the Day?
Have you ever experienced a weather phenomenon?

I am currently enjoying some much needed beach time in Croatia. I may be a bit slow responding to comments but will be back to normal blogging when I return! Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Scary and impressive at the same time! My first thought would have been that there’s a bush fire near Sydney or something…..absolutely scary but quite cool once you know what’s going on I bet!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I love the pictures he took. I think I would have panicked before I thought of reasonable explanations for the red dust.

  • gracey

Wow those are some amazing pictures! Have fun in Croatia…I was there in the winter, so never went to the beach, but my friend now maintains 2 apartments there for visitors…someday I’ll go back…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

We loved Croatia! It was such a beautiful country, I would love to go back again as well.

  • Challenge Mantra

Those photos are unreal. I can’t even fathom what the cleanup must have been like! Very cool :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know right, that must have taken so long to clean up.

  • http://www.elegance-revisited.com/ TiinaL

Looks unreal… must have been hell to clean up, too.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Exactly my thoughts!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

That looks terrifying! I really would have freaked out if I had seen it! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me too! When he told me he just went out and took pictures right away I was like how were you not freaked out!

  • http://sophieinclogs.com Sophie

Amazing!!! I’ve never even heard of such a thing!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I hadn’t either, looks like an amazing thing to see!

  • http://bristolinmypocket.blogspot.co.uk/ Sara Rose

When I lived in Lubbock, Texas, I was driving when a haboob hit (aka an extreme dust storm). I may have to post a few pictures up on my blog!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh wow, yes I think a blog post needs to happen about this!

  • http://www.therandomwritings.com/ Rachel G

Whoa-it’s crazy to think that those pictures are real! I just can’t imagine the outside world looking like that!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me either! I couldn’t imagine waking up to seeing everything covered in red!

Crazy! I can’t imagine waking up to that!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Me either!

  • http://mariellegreen.com/ Marielle

Wow, that looks really cool. When I was in Korea, there was this “yellow dust” period in the spring. It didn’t look nearly that pretty - just kind of hazy and thick with sand/pollution - and it sucked to be outside in it without a face mask.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh wow, I could imagine it would not have been fun to be outside without a face mask in that!

  • Kristen Warren

haha i remember this! it was hilarious, everything was red for so long. i went out for a run and came back like i’d run a red only colour run!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha, it must have been amazing to see!

  • http://theannabelleblog.com/ Anna Belle

    Those pictures are amazing!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      I agree!

  • http://englishgirlcanadianman.blogspot.ca/ Holly Nelson

Wow, that is unreal! He was lucky to have seen that! I was here in Ontario for the ice storms at the end of 2013, that was pretty crazy - to see the trees bowed down with the weight of the ice and cars underneath five inches of ice!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Wow, that is some crazy ice! I think I would have been pretty terrified if I woke up and saw red everywhere but I am glad H got some amazing pictures of it.

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

Eeek I would have totally though the world was ending!! Once in Arizona we got caught in a mud storm thing, essentially it was raining mud we just rain into a restaurant till is passed.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Same here! I asked H if that was his first thought as well. Raining mud, sounds messy and a bit scary!

  • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

what an incredible sight to see! I heard about this and wanted to experience it so badly! I’m so jealous that you were able to see it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I wish I had seen it as well, this was before I was in Australia but I am living through H’s experience and his pictures.

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

That’s beautiful and terrifying all at once. Especially if you don’t know what’s happening! Incredible photos, thanks for sharing :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, beautiful and terrifying all at once!

  • http://wheretheheartblog.blogspot.com Caity @ Where The Heart Is

Oh my gosh, that’s both terrifying and kind of beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like that! I know I would be scared out of my mind if that were me though - and I would not have gotten these pics, H is a brave one!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know! I asked him if he was scared but nope just headed outside to take pictures instead, crazy guy.

  • http://pondertheirrelevant.com/ Meredith

Wow that looks amazing! I’ve been through a few dust storms, but nothing like this! I can’t imagine waking up to a world gone red like that - beautiful and a little freaky all at once.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I couldn’t imagine a dust storm let alone a red one! H’s photos remind me of waking up on Mars or something.

  • http://www.freedom-of-excess.blogspot.com/ Darci Miller

OH my gosh, this looks beautiful but absolutely terrifying! I’m living in Colorado, where there are some pretty intense fires during the summer, and a year before I moved here there was one incredibly close to the city. One of my friends was evacuated from his apartment, and when he stopped by to get clothes and stuff before leaving, he said it looked like the apocalypse outside. Pretty sure that’s what I’d think if I walked outside to see nothing but bright red dust! Yikes!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I have quite a bit of family that lives in Colorado and some of the pictures they have of fires in the summer time look so scary!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

    That is so insanely cool/terrifying!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Isn’t it though!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy @ Days Like This

Wow. Interesting. I have never seen anything like this!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me either, I had never even heard of anything like that.

  • http://daydreamsofsummertime.blogspot.co.uk/ Sarah I

I remember this happened just after my first trip to Australia, I would have been terrified if I had of been there at the time!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I would have been so terrified as well!

  • http://prettythingandco.com/ Madaline

Wow. That’s amazing - I think I would have been totally freaking out though!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am pretty sure my first thoughts wouldn’t be to take pictures, I would be so frightened. But I am glad H wasn’t afraid and got these great pictures :)

  • http://www.shoutingchow.com Hsiao-Ting

Wow that’s crazy!! I would love to have been there! I don’t think I ever attended anything that surreal sadly.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me either, listening to H’s description about it sounds so surreal!

  • http://www.amyandthegreatworld.com/ AmyMacWorld

I can’t believe that red! It looks unreal. Almost from a different planet. I hope you are having so much fun (and relaxation!) in Croatia! You deserve it :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks Amy! Croatia was so amazing I loved it!

  • Mar

Wow those pictures are amazing! I can’t believe that’s real.

Hey! Just joined Travel Tuesday for the first time! I’m so excited :) Hope Croatia is great- I visited Dubrovnik, Croatia eight years ago and loved it.

Thanks for joining up! Croatia was amazing I loved it!

  • http://stylishimoto.blogspot.jp/ Anna

This sounds amazing, I have never heard of anything like it! I can’t believe how red the sky is!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It looks so red! I didn’t even know this was something that actually happened.

  • Mrs_Jack_of_all_trades

Wow, red sky! Now, that’s something to see :) Thanks for the link up and allowing me to share. Looking forward to next week

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I could only imagine how amazing it would be to see!

  • http://speaking-denglish.com/ Alex, Denglish Speaker

Wow, unreal! I’ve never experienced a dust storm and while it sounds awfully messy, those photos make it super beautiful!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It does sound really messy, I am kinda glad I just get to admire the pictures of the dust storm and not be there for the mess of it.

  • Lisa @ Ameliorer la Vie

That’s crazy that it looked THAT reddish/orange!! Those pictures are so neat. When I was in Italy, I was sleeping and woke up to the house SHAKING. There had been a 4.5 level earthquake. Luckily, no one in the town was injured and there was no damage, but it was freaky being shaken in the middle of the night and to wake up to my room moving!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know how you feel! I have never experience and earthquake and then once here in Iceland in the middle of the night we had a small one and when I tried waking H up he was just like ya its just an earthquake go back to bed. I was so terrified but he was so used to them and didn’t think anything of it!

  • http://bluehairinbelgium.blogspot.be/ Kerri Heritage

Wow that’s crazy! But beautiful at the same time. I think weather can be so amazing and I’d love to photograph more of it. Sadly, no crazy weather phenomena for me.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is true, weather can be so amazing. I really hope to photograph the Northern Lights this winter, they are amazing.

  • Corinne Vail

That’s a rather freaky phenomenon! Cool photos!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Thank you!

  • http://confuzzledom.wordpress.com/ bevchen

Oh wow, that looks amazing! I think I would have panicked, too. Even if I didn’t know what was going on. Waking up to bright red sky would just be too freaky!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      I agree, I still don’t understand how H didn’t panic!
