This weekend H and I had big plans to try out a new hiking spot for our anniversary, unfortunately the Icelandic weather had other plans which kept us hiding out indoors. While I didn’t get my hiking adventure I had been looking forward to all week I did fed my wanderlust by going through all my Iceland pictures. We are currently attempting to create a gallery wall (it is so hard to chose the pictures I like them all!) and while we were going through our hundreds of pictures my favorites always featured the same thing, waterfalls!
When you are driving in the Icelandic countryside there seems to be endless waterfalls streaming off the side of cliffs and you never know when a hike will lead you to a beautiful waterfall. If your planning a visit to Iceland I recommend chasing waterfalls. Here is a little list to help you out!
1. Gullfoss

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland, Gullfoss is an easy day trip from Reykjavik and a must see while in Iceland. Located along the Golden Circle this large waterfall is stunning in all seasons so don’t let a little snow stop you from visiting this beauty!
2. Öxarárfoss

While much smaller than Gullfoss, Öxarárfoss is another waterfall that looks just as beautiful with a dash of snow as it does with the sun shinning. Located at Þingvellir National Park it is the perfect first stop along the Golden Circle when you are on our way to Gullfoss.
3.Svartifoss

Located in the south of Iceland, Svartifoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland. The black lava columns that surround the Svartifoss make this one unique waterfall you won’t want to miss. Fun fact, the lava columns were inspiration for the architects who designed Hallgrímskirkja church in downtown Reykjavik.
4. Skógafoss

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and a popular stop in the south of Iceland. When the sun is shinning you can often see in front of the waterfall. What is more magical than a beautiful waterfall with a rainbow in front of it? Those wanting to hike the famous Laugavegur to Landmannalaugar trail can also begin their journey here. A pretty start to any adventure!
5. Seljalandsfoss

Located just 30 minutes away from Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss is another must see waterfall that was also one of the way points during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6. With a pathway behind the waterfall it is possible to walk all around the area, just be prepared to get a bit damp! If you visit during the winter months walk with caution, the area gets very icy but the waterfall with icicles all around is more than worth the risk!
These are just a few of the must see waterfalls in Iceland. Also be sure to add Glymur, Gjáin and Bruarfoss to your list!
Question of the Day?
What is the most beautiful waterfall you have seen?
