Cleavage Not Allowed

txmilan

After leaving the beautiful Swiss Alps H and I arrived late that night in Milan where found our hostel in a questionable construction area. We booked all our hostels/hotels online so when we arrived to each one we were always keeping our fingers crossed for a nice room.

When we saw all the construction going on we were more than concerned so it was a pleasant surprise when we walked into a newly renovated room with a huge bed and our first tv of the trip!

Milan hotel

We started our first morning in Milan with a very chocolate filled breakfast from our hostel. When we were booking our rooms we always tried to stay in places where breakfast would be included to help save a bit of money and time. When we went out that morning to get our breakfast and found a tray full of cookies, nutella, chocolate filled croissants and chocolate crackers we knew this plan may not work everywhere.

After getting our fill of sugar for the month we stepped out to the chaos that was happening on our street. As soon as you were outside you heard horns honking, people shouting, and who could forget the lovely construction and all their glorious sounds.

Milan

H and I had no real plan for our two days in Milan so we started walking in the direction of what we though was city center and just went with the flow from there.

Milan
MilanMilan

Our wandering led us in the right direction because soon we saw these intriguing towers in the distance.

Milan

We had arrived at our goal destination in city center where you find the beautiful cathedral Duomo di Milano. It is a Gothic style cathedral that took over 6 centuries to complete and is the 5th largest cathedral in the World.

Church DumoChurch Dumo

H was super excited because as he pointed out his navigation skills lead us the right way yet again. He didn’t like to brag about it at all on our trip or anything because that would of been super annoying.

Milan

You can purchase tickets to climb to the roof of Duomo di Milano which I highly recommend. The details of the towers are amazing and you get some great views of the city. It was quite a few stairs to climb and in some tight spaces but this was the highlight for me of our time in Milan.

Once at the top I was amazed by all the detail and work that must have gone into making this beautiful cathedral.

The views of Milan from the rooftop were pretty amazing as well.

I could have sat on the rooftop taking in the city views and all the beautiful details of the cathedral all afternoon. It was way to hot for that though so we headed back down the stairs to see the inside of the cathedral and after checking out the rooftop I knew we were in for a treat.

As we were lined up to head into the church I was about to walk in the door when a security guard grabbed me and pointed at my arms and said “No”! Like I said this was our first day in Italy and visiting cathedrals in the country so I was unaware of the dress code requirements.

I quickly covered up with my jacket only to be pulled back out of line again and having my legs pointed at and told another “No”! So as H likes to say I was dressed to sexy for Duomo di Milano and wasn’t allowed inside. Instead I had to wait (pout) outside while H got to tour the interior of the cathedral. At least H took lots of photos for me so I could feel like I was there.

Duomo di MilanoDuomo di Milano

The sunlight wasn’t really helping the quality of the photos but this stained glass window that H took of picture of is absolutely beautiful. I must head back to Duomo di Milano in appropriate attire so I can see it for myself.

Duomo di Milano

While H was enjoying himself inside the cathedral I sat on the ground outside pouting and trying to figure out what this person in costume was doing. Maybe I should have asked them if I could borrow their costume so I would be covered enough to head inside the cathedral.

Milan

As soon as H finished up inside he took me straight for food, the man knows me well. We enjoyed lunch at this cafe right in front of the beautiful Duomo di Milano.

MilanMilan

An amazing view, warm Italian sunshine and delicious food, my mood was turned right around. I even didn’t get mad at H for cutting most of my face out of what would have been an awesome photo of both of us, instead its an awesome photo of H.

Milan

Next week I will recap the rest of our time in Milan. Exploring art galleries and Milan’s beautiful shopping center, the best pasta dish we had while in Italy and our first challenge as a couple traveling together, there is more fun to come!

Question of the Day?
Have you ever had an issue with dress code when traveling?

Cleavage not allowed is an excellent title! I will certainly keep this dress-code in mind when I travel to Italy (some day). I’m sorry you weren’t able to go inside!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! Yes bring a scarf or cardigan when your in Italy, hopefully soon;)

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Ha! What a bummer! At least you can console yourself with the knowledge that you must have looked good ;) x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha that was exactly what I was telling myself!

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

Two things I love red Toms, mine are patiently waiting in the closet to be brought out and my stupid winter boots put in their place. Second Fredrik is always taking pictures like that and I am like hello what about me!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me to, I can’ wait to put my red toms back on! Haha I had to share your comment with H, I mean were suppose to be the other half we need to be included!

  • http://esthernovich.blogspot.com.es/ esthernovich

oh Milan! I was actually there! I had to go for a 2-day business trip, they took us on a bus tour one afternoon and we also walked a bit around the center of the city. The cathedral was amazing, although we didn´t get to go inside (either). What I really loved was looking at all the known fashion shops (never actually getting to go inside…bummer), like the whole building of JUST Giorgio Armani, did you see it? looking forward to your next post ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, we just walked by all those beautiful shops but never went in! What a fun business trip!

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

That cathedral is amazing on the outside. When we were in Italy visiting cathedrals, they were mainly concerned with your shoulders being covered, and normally provided gauzy fabric to cover up with, I wore shorts and dresses and was fine. It must be different at different locations. I always tried to carry a scarf around with me to cover up with if I was wearing a tank top or anything.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Most places we went as well I got to rock that sexy gauzy fabric over my legs. They were just extra strict at this cathedral, boo!

  • http://guntersabroad.blogspot.com/ Jamie @ Gunters Abroad

What a fun experience! I can’t believe they woudln’t let you in….too funny!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know right, next time I am going in!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

That cathedral is GORGEOUS! No wonder it took them so long to finish… it looks straight out of a fairytale!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Seriously just the roof must have taken forever to finish!

  • http://montgomeryfest.com/ Annie Montgomery

oooh yes. I got shunned from that duomo too! i had shorts on because it was flipping July and oh so hot. actually, both of us had shorts on, but mine being the gal variety were too short. so J had to do the same as H! one day us girls will make it in! ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

They were extra strict at this cathedral than any of the others we visited. Glad you got to see some photos to, I def think a trip back is needed for us!

  • http://www.jadeoak.com/ jackie jade

it looks so pretty! wow - I can’t believe it took that long to finish. but it’s gorgeous. I’ve been to rome, venice and florence but not milan. will need to go there one day!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I loved Florence! Milan kept up with its fashion reputation, so many high end stores everywhere!

  • http://anothercleanslate.com/ Kate @ Another Clean Slate

Soooo now I want to book a trip to Milan :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes! Its so beautiful, I am ready to head back as well.

  • Rachel Murphree

Wow, I was just thinking that your dress was so cute before I read the part about the dress code. I didn’t even think it was terribly revealing. Good to know though. I also should not have read this post before lunch because now I want that delicious pasta!

    -Rachel @ With Love, Rachel

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me either, this was the only time I had an issue with my dress code. I was dreaming of that pasta as I was posted this!

  • http://weiderjl.blogspot.com/ Jenn

Boo to not being able to go in! All of the churches I’ve been to in Europe had a pretty strict dress code so now I just assume I need my shoulders and knees covered.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

All other churches we visited in Italy usually had a fabric to cover up with in case we needed extra but this was the only place we had security guards checking us on the way in. I was always prepared after that!

  • http://ifsandsandbutts.com/ Alex

Hahaha oh no! I’ve always heard about this but never encountered a problem. Actually, in Istanbul, they even ahd paper like garments to wrap around us for the mosques!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Everywhere else we visited in Italy had those paper wraps as well, this cathedral was by the far the most strict!

  • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

Hahah you funny thing. At least H took some awesome photos. When I was in Vietnam I visited a temple and I took a sarong to cover up my legs!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I was so annoyed since I was mostly covered up, everywhere else we went in Italy had these sexy paper wraps to use but not here!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

Omg you two are the cutest! I’m kind of surprised you weren’t allowed in the Cathedral in what you were wearing! But at least H took some gorgeous pics for you! P.S. Ty and I have decided to head to Oregon (soooo excited!!) so I’m off to reread your posts about your home state!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much Carly! I know right, I didn’t think I was dressed that revealing, especially when I had put my jacket on! Ohh yaaa I am so excited you guys are going to Oregon! Feel free to message me for any questions. Do you guys have an idea of what part of Oregon you are going to visit?

Milan was beautiful! Sounds like we both need to head back there so we can go inside!

  • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

oh man, Milan is one of my favorite cities! Isn’t it gorgeous?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It really is gorgeous, it was a great first stop in Italy :)

  • http://meetatthebarre.blogspot.com/ Amanda Elizabeth

I love Milan! I still have dreams about margherita pizza and gnocchi. I haven’t had a problem traveling with dress codes but always have heard from Europeans they can spot an American a mile away by their sneakers :-)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes I hear that all the time about the American dress code stereotypes! The sad thing is a lot of the times its true and I can now pretty easily spot the American travelers here in Iceland.

  • http://theannabelleblog.com/ Anna Belle

I’m surprised they were so strict! I haven’t seen those rules be that enforced elsewhere (but from your title I knew exactly where your story was headed!) In any case, you dress is very cute!

My sister-in-law lives in one of the northern suburbs, so we spent 2 weeks with her last winter (so no issues for the dress code!). One of my favorite memories is one night (after spending the day in Bergamo), we took the subways in and emerged from underground right in front of the cathedral - it was all lit up and white and gorgeous. (Then we got pizza, which was also pretty great!)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ha yes even though I covered up my cleavage it still was a no entry. Oh I bet seeing it all lit up at night was so beautiful!

  • http://independenttravelcats.com/ Jessica - Independent Travel C

That is too bad you were not able to see the inside of the church, but glad your boyfriend took pictures for you! Many cathedrals in Europe (especially Italy) have dress codes but they are not always enforced. But the same is true of many temples in Asia and Muslim sites in the Middle East/Eastern Europe. I generally keep a scarf or jacket in my day bag for these kinds of things (tights/leggings also work to cover the legs). We’ve encountered dress code related stuff several times, but generally been prepared except for one casino where Ethan needed to be wearing a nice jacket to enter.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ya we came across dress codes but never being enforced except for there. Was frustrating since I had covered up and still was a no go. Next time I will bring lots of extra clothes! Those casinos really crank the air conditioning!

  • http://www.erikafromamerica.com/ Erika

So, I honestly can’t remember if I went inside that cathedral or not when I was in Milan… hmm, it’s really stumping me! But oh man, that’s no fun that you couldn’t go inside… I’ve never seen the dress codes for legs enforced like that for any cathedrals, but this is good information for anyone who is planning on visiting there.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

This was the only place that we had the dress code enforced. I will have to go back so I can enter in the next time!

  • http://secretsofcamille.blogspot.it/ Camille L

The dress code made my friend thought that I’m an old fashion girl, so when she was free I brought here at the Duomo and finally realized that it was true when the guard stopped her!
I’m glad you enjoyed your trip!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes they are really strict on the dress code there! It is either dress as an old fashion girl or miss out.

  • http://slowtravelguidebook.com Kate

Ahh, how I’d love to visit Milan sometime! Hopefully it will happen before too long. I definitely got into trouble with dress code once while visiting a mosque in eastern Europe with several other musicians I was traveling with. It was super embarrassing at the time, but in the end, I got to spend a leisurely couple of hours at a café with a killer Turkish coffee while my traveling companions had our meeting at the mosque. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is super embarrassing at the time I agree but it sounds like you got to spend a nice relaxing time in an awesome place! This just means we will have to go back and visit those places again:)

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

Looks like a lovely day! Beautiful pictures!
It sucks so much about you not being able to get inside the church! I obviously had heard about the mosques with dress code and that they offer shawls to cover yourself. It seems almost absurd that they wouldn’t offer that to tourists!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know right! In other churches they had something to offer the tourists to cover themselves with. This was our first city in Italy so I had no idea about the dress codes. Sounds like I need to go back to Milan so I can see the inside of the church.
