My Favorite Christmas Traditions

Christmas time, its the most magical time of the year am I right?! Beautiful decorations, holiday baking, and extra family time, what is not to love about this festive season?

My favorite thing about Christmas time, all the family traditions I have grown up with. Every year I look forward to these traditions, no matter how old I get they are the best part and I feel lucky to have grown up with so many wonderful traditions.

I have a hard time with change, especially when it comes to holiday traditions. I like to keep our holiday celebrations the same every year. As an expat though change is basically what my life is all about, and being in a different country than your family over the holidays, it makes it difficult to keep all those holiday traditions alive.

Welcome home I just had to share this picture, it is from last year when my family picked us up at the airport in Santa costumes. The best welcome home ever.

This year I will be celebrating Christmas in Iceland, which is going to be wonderful I really enjoy the Icelandic Christmas, but this also means I am going to miss out on several of my family traditions. Even though I won’t be celebrating Christmas back home with my family I wanted to keep those holiday traditions alive here on the blog and share a few with you all a few of my favorite holiday traditions.

The “kids” Christmas tree

Over the years my mom has collected quite the assortment of ornaments my sisters and I have made. Of course these beautiful ornaments are not displayed on the “big” Christmas tree, only special ornaments make the cut for that tree. Instead you will find our childhood masterpieces on the mini tree that is dedicated completely to our creations.

Christmas Tree

Growing up my mom always waited until all three of us girls were home so we could decorate the tree together. I am pretty sure we were not always the most enthusiastic group but I am so glad my mom kept at it every year. This is one of my favorite memories growing up and the ornaments never fail to make us all laugh, we were some talented kids;)

I will miss getting to decorate the tree this year but thanks to the wonderful world of technology I will be making sure my ornaments aren’t hidden in the back of the tree via skype.

New Christmas Pajamas

There is something so special about getting a new pair of pjs on Christmas Eve. Maybe it was the fact that this was the first gift we got to open or that our new pjs were always incredibly comfortable but my sisters and I look forward to our new pjs every year.

These leopard print onesie were the best Christmas pjs!

We of course must have matching ones, they make all those Christmas morning pictures look more put together when we are all matching :) Last year the Viking got to join in on the Christmas pj fun, we got my Dad and him matching Christmas pjs, and those Christmas pjs have been a frequent lazy weekend wear every since.

Christmas 2014

I am debating this year if I should buy myself a pair of Christmas pjs. Even though they are incredibly expensive here in Iceland this is one tradition that I think I will have to do every year no matter what!

Reading a Christmas book

No matter how late we got home from family dinners and holiday parties our Christmas Eve was never complete until we read the Christmas book. Some years this meant us girls fell asleep during the reading, or complained a bit about it, but not once have we missed this tradition.

Christmas 2014

The older I get the more I realize how amazing my parents are. Sitting down together after the chaos of Christmas Eve to read a story before bed, it is such a special tradition to me. I think I am going to make the Viking read a Christmas story with me this year.

Christmas Stockings

Okay, so not really anything unique about this tradition, but I just love Christmas stockings! Every year my sisters and I come down the stairs at the same time (from youngest to oldest, yes we still do this) and the first thing we do is open our Christmas stockings.

Christmas 2014

Maybe it is because you never know what you will find in your stocking but this is my favorite gift to open on Christmas. I even got the Viking his own stocking made so he could join in on the fun last Christmas.

Christmas 2014

This was H’s first stocking (they don’t have stockings in Iceland) and he was a big fan. We even have Christmas stockings hanging up here in Iceland, this is a tradition that I think the Viking is happy to add to our Christmas celebrations.

Christmas Breakfast

Once the stockings are opened my grandparents arrive which means it is breakfast time. The breakfast spread is always impressive, from stuffed french toast to egg and sausage casserole I look forward to Christmas breakfast more than I do the dinner!

Christmas 2014

One very important part to our Christmas breakfast tradition, a gin fizz. My grandma started the tradition of having gin fizz on Christmas morning (the version we make reminds me of an Orange Julius, plus gin) and we never start our breakfast until we all have a gin fizz in hand, and finally I am old enough for the adult version :)

Christmas 2014

Once breakfast is finished we all get cozy around the tree and spend the next several hours opening gifts. Now that we are all older (and can have some self control and not open all our gifts at once) we each take turns opening up a gift. Taking our time and really enjoying each other and all the different gifts we receive, it makes Christmas all that more special.

Christmas 2014 Azora was a Christmas puppy four years ago, best Christmas gift ever!

Christmas this year will be about new traditions instead of those I grew up with and love so much. Lucky me I have my Viking by my side to help celebrate Christmas and still throw in some of my favorite traditions. H and I are planning on blending our two cultures and holiday traditions, which are completely different, and making our own traditions together like 24 Days of Togetherness. It will be one interesting Christmas!

Your family’s Christmas traditions are soooo adorable. No wonder you miss Christmas there so much! The one thing I’ve really realized that I miss my stocking and how it’s always empty on Christmas morning, unless I’m the one to put some sweets or something in there… hmmmmm…. I am inspired now to have a talk with the husband about this one. I want a surprise!! :))

Aren’t stockings such a fun extra part of Christmas morning :) I hope you get some surprises in there this year:)

No matter how old I am, I still think opening stockings is one of the most exciting things in the world!

      Agreed! Merry Christmas Laura :)

Awh so many cute traditions! My younger sister always wakes us up super early and we open presents in our pyjamas - I’m looking forward to getting to do that again this year instead of being 12 hours behind them!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Awe enjoy! Merry Christmas Jessi :)

  • http://heleneinbetween.com/ Helene

I have a really hard time with change. but it’s inevitable and you’ve so embraced it! I LOVE the christmas pjs tradition, we just started that last year and it is so fun!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I really have such a hard time with change as well, especially my favorite traditions :) Aren’t new pjs on Christmas the best! Merry Christmas Helene :)

  • http://www.thoroughlymodernblog.blogspot.com/ Kate

I love getting PJs at christmas! I still own/wear pairs that my grandparents/parents/aunts and uncles bought for me back in middle school. I also just wrote a blog post about how my husband and I both bought the exact same pajama shirt at Victoria’s secret the other day. Since I’ve been married, it’s been tough dealing with change and making new traditions-but it helps to have a loving partner by your side! (And I’m sure it will be truly magical in a place like Iceland!)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

New Christmas pjs are just the best I love them! It can be hard combining two different sets of traditions but then so fun making new ones together :) Merry Christmas!

  • http://montgomeryfest.com/ Annie Montgomery

so cute, Kaelene!! it gave me all the fuzzies to hear about how close your family is and how sweet your parents are for sticking to all of these traditions, especially with 3 teenage girls! ;) Merry Christmas to you and the Viking! xxo.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you Annie and thank you for inviting me to write for the expat holidays! Merry Christmas to you and Mr. Montgomery :)

We read a Christmas book every year too! And I vote we bring that gin and fizz tradition to Iceland! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Aren’t Christmas books so fun! One year we sent my parents the Yule Lad book so they have that out with the Christmas books now :)

  • http://www.blondefreedom.com Sky @ Blonde Freedom

I like the idea of the mini-tree for the kid Christmas ornaments. Our main tree in my parent’s house is full of ornaments from my sister and I. We always complain when we have to hang them up haha. We also get new pjs on Christmas Eve too! Enjoy your Christmas in Iceland with your Viking!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The mini-tree is one of my favorites now, but growing up I am sure I complained a bit having to hang those ornaments :) Have a great Christmas as well!

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

aww i love all the traditions you had growing up! we had nothing like that, i really want to do things like that when i have kids. i also really want to start a tradition with KC and I, but have no idea what. I would love to do the pjs one but there’s no way he would be down haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The older I get the more I appreciate all those lovely traditions. I basically just force my Viking into all my traditions ha:) Have a great Christmas Kristen!

  • http://www.katieskaresuperstar.blogspot.com Katie Skare

Yes to Christmas Pajamas!!! We always do that as the first gift in my family as well!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is such a fun gift!

I love the Chistmas Pijamas tradition, those onesies look so comfy! I love mixing Christmas traditions, yey to us! Happy holidays!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Mixing Christmas traditions is a lot of fun, challenging at times, but worth it :) Happy Holidays to you too dear :)

  • http://artemishi.blogspot.com Beth

Aw, the Christmas Book reading! We used to do that, too, when I was tiny. I totally forgot about that! Thank you. :)
(and also, thanks for the reminder that I need to try a gin fizz and be all 1920s flapper chic)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! Ha the gin fizz definitely will bring out your inner 1920s flapper girl:)

  • Eric Brink

One odd tradition Gayle and I have developed is our 2nd smaller “Unity Tree”. It’s natural as opposed to the first being artificial (safety issues as we’re gone a lot) and contains ornaments that neither of us want on the main tree. That would be penguin ornaments for her and Star Trek ones for me. After all, what says Merry Christmas better than a Borg Cube? :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love the smaller trees with the ornaments that maybe aren’t the most beautiful but have all the meaning :)

  • Eric Brink

I’m also curious on how you and H have developed your own Christmas traditions. We added Midnight Mass, and I’m not even Catholic. But what I love best about Christmas is the “Quiet” that descends in the neighborhood in the evening and following morning.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

H and I combine both our traditions for now but depending on what country we are celebrating in that will change our traditions a bit as well:) Merry Christmas!

  • http://www.SamanthaAngell.com/ Samantha Angell

Have a wonderful holiday season! So great that you have been able to keep so many traditions alive over the years, and that your family skypes you in! It can certainly be hard being away over the holidays. I know the last several years, I always had my mom Skype me in from church when they sang Silent Night- it really helps to still feel connected!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you, same to you enjoy being home with your family this year:)

  • http://www.laurenonlocation.com laurenonlocation

These traditions are so so sweet! Your family really has some good ones. Reading this just made me so happy that I’m flying home to spend Christmas with my family this year! There’s nothing better than quality family time and old family traditions to put you in the holiday spirit. We have some similar traditions like opening the stockings first and watching as we one-by-one open gifts. Can’t wait to read about your Icelandic Christmas! New traditions can be just as specials as old ones :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So true, there is really no place better than home for the holidays! Enjoy your Christmas :)

  • http://www.thegirlwholovedtowrite.com/ Chelsea

    Christmas pjs are the best!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      They really are!

  • http://totravelandbeyond.com/ Macy Volpe

Such sweet traditions! It’s nice to have a blend of those from America and the ones in Iceland. I hope you have a great holiday!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is really fun to blend the two together and celebrate both countries traditions :)

  • http://www.beingleanna.com/ Leanna @ Being Leanna

The stocking is my favorite part of Christmas as well! It’s so much fun and so weird to think that other countries don’t do this! I’m glad you brought the tradition to Iceland.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Stockings are just the best, I couldn’t imagine not having one so I had to bring it to Iceland :) Merry Christmas Leanna :)

  • http://www.smalltownsandcitylights.com/ Rachel @ STCL

Love your traditions! You should definitely splurge and get Christmas PJs. Some traditions you just have to keep going! Funny that you do stockings first, we always do them last!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Saving the stockings for the end sounds like a nice way to end the morning too!

  • http://www.beingbethblog.com Beth @ Being Beth

Splurge! I love Christmas PJ traditions. I’m a “traditionalist” when it comes to holidays too. My mom is always trying to suggest doing something new and whenever we do something different, the first year is always hardest for me.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think you have the right idea, I need those Christmas pjs :)

  • http://www.jadeoak.com/ jackie jade

Love these Christmas traditions! It’s fun to do the same thing for so many years and then create new traditions too. I was never big on stockings, but my husband is, so it’s fun buying little stocking stuffers for each other now.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Agreed! It is fun keeping the traditions alive that you had growing up and then adding new ones as you get older. H never had a stocking so I love bringing that tradition to Iceland :)

  • http://whattheelleblog.blogspot.com/ Elle @ WhatTheElle

We finish off Christmas Eve with a Christmas book too! Never missed a year of that. We have more traditions than I can even count in my head but I wish my family would hop on board the matching pajamas train! I always want to and we never do haha, one day…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Reading a Christmas book is such a nice way to unwind and take in all the Christmas spirit, I love it:) Family traditions are just the best:)

  • http://luyoutravel.blogspot.com/ Elizabeth Georgian

I love the Christmas book tradition! Such a sweet way to celebrate and relax before going to bed. Perhaps we should start that with the little guy!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is such a sweet tradition to do with your family!

  • http://adventitiousviolet.com/ Camila @ AdventitiousViolet

Aw Christmas is a hard period for expats - not just because you can be far from home but because it’s having to create new traditions. I love the way my family do Christmas but I’m getting used to the British way too - and I think we will, in time, create our own traditions! My Brit’s family also don’t do stockings and last year my mom sent us our very own stockings to hang in our flat in Scotland, which was very nice :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is tough, it takes time to get used to different traditions for sure. This year we did a good combination of the two different Christmas and it was so nice.
