Glymur, Iceland

Travel Wednesday Iceland
Last week
I left you with a preview picture for today’s post about our hike to Glymur. Now I am here to explain that look of terror on my face!

Glymur is the highest waterfall in Iceland so when H asked if I would be up for a hike to see it I was all in. H had never been to Glymur so neither of us had any idea what to expect. When we were in the parking lot though and saw several people in serious hiking gear (think walking sticks, major boots and backpacks filled with supplies) we were starting to wonder what we were getting ourselves into. We of course were not wearing any proper hiking gear just some regular jeans and tennis shoes so after seeing this I was a bit nervous.

To start the hike you walk through a rock, or a cave whatever you want to call it.

Okay so far so good. After walking through the cave you come down to a beautiful river. Silly me for thinking we would be having a peaceful walk along the river.

Pretty right? We walked along the river for about ten minutes enjoying the views and then the fun began.

When the trail ended at this unstable log H didn’t even hesitate before crossing over. I happen to be a bit more cautious about walking across freezing cold rivers on a wobbly log and took some time to be convinced to try crossing over.

When I stepped on and felt how loose the cable you were suppose to use for support was I may of had a mini panic attack and screamed at H, which he so graciously caught on camera for me.

It took me awhile to make my way across the log. This is my I can’t believe I survived that face. Always the drama queen.

After that exciting adventure we started our climb up the mountain. We hiked for probably 45 minutes up some steep hill sides but I didn’t even care, the views were amazing.

It felt like you could see over the entire country! I love all the different elements you see, rugged mountain ranges, the river and the ocean in the distance, Iceland is always full of natural beauty. When we finally reached the waterfall it made the entire exhausting experience so worth it.

Our hike to Glymur is by far my favorite hike I have done here in Iceland. Not only did we see some beautiful views but we have a pretty good story to tell about our adventure as well.

Two weeks after this trip I left Iceland and headed back to Oregon for the summer. After working an extremely boring office job and being away from H for 3 months we were reunited that September and took off on a month long backpacking trip through Europe together.

Next week we will be back in Paris where our Euro trip began. I can’t wait to start sharing all our pictures and stories from that trip with you all!

Question of the Day?
Would you cross a river on a log? Have you ever hiked back to waterfalls?

The scenery here is amazing! Your face is priceless. I would totally walk over that log, but I am so ungraceful I would likely be taking a swim in the freezing cold water!

What an amazing experience! And your way of telling it makes it feel like we are right there with you. I am such a scaredy cat I´m not sure I would have been able to cross that log. I´m glad you did though! Those scenery pictures are just awesome and beautiful. so jealous!!

  • Jessica Shannon

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

What a beautiful hike to go on!! I would be the same way about the log…I mean one false move and you’d be in the water floating away. (Fellow drama queen here.)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha right my thoughts exactly! Nothing wrong with being a drama queen, it just means were cautious:)

That’s a thin tiny log to have to cross on! I’d be terrified, I’m such a wuss.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I was so scared, but so glad H didn’t let me back out and I crossed the log. Those views made it worth it!

  • Alice

Oh wow, beautiful views! I’m absolutely terrified of heights - I went on a ‘go ape’ style trip for my friends hen do, which involve walking across logs like this at ridiculous heights in the same way (harnessed though, of course). I had a similar look of terror to you! Haha :)

Heights just aren’t my thing at all so I don’t blame you! Sounds like a fun party though!

  • BlushandBarbells

I’ve hiked to a few waterfalls, but I don’t know about crossing a log without some sort of support. Gorgeous photos, as always.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes the crossing of the log was not my favorite moment but so glad I sucked it up and didn’t miss out on that waterfall! I think they need to come up with a better plan for us hikers to see Glymur!

  • LadyOfTheCakes

Depends on the temperature of the river. In Iceland, NOOOOOOOO!
    Beautiful pics :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha yes I was definitely determined to not fall in that cold water! If it had been an Icelandic hot spring then maybe it would be a different story:)

yikes - that log looks so scary! but the views look seriously amazing - wow!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I’d be terrified crossing that log! But it seems well worth it with such amazing views…

My thoughts exactly, I was so terrified crossing the log but so glad I got to see those amazing views!

Love the view of coming out of the cave near the river. Also very happy you didn’t drown when crossing that log, at least there was a cable!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes I was so glad for the cable! The views were so beautiful, I have seen some amazing pictures of Glymur in the wintertime as well so I may have to check it out during winter as well.

  • Rachel Murphree

crossing that log looks terrifying, but the views are worth it! Wow!

I love hikes where you have to cross bridges and logs and stepping stones, so I’d love this. It’s so so pretty.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

This hike would be right up your alley! If you guys make it over you will have to check it out.
