Pumpkins lined the steps of the brownstones, spider webs dangled across the railings, children giggled and ran around in Elsa and Spiderman outfits. Halloween was in full swing on our little block in NYC.
My Viking, he obviously knows what Halloween is, and has participated in one or two years of costume parties, but he hadn’t really experienced Halloween because lets face it, to really experience a holiday you need to experience it in a place that goes all out.
And NYC, it goes all out!
As Halloween was the day before the marathon our celebrations were a bit more low key this year, even though I was very tempted to throw on a costume and join in the fun at the Village Halloween parade! But, our low key festivities, they still made for a memorable Halloween.
Our Halloween kicked off in the best possible way, a dog costume parade! I am not kidding, this was the highlight of the day. What started as a lazy morning stroll around Battery Park turned into one of the most adorable things I have seen. The dogs, they were just too cute, I seriously need a dog.
This one was my favorite costume of the day, I mean how cute it this cowboy?!
When I get my own dog you better believe we are having a dog costume parade, even if I am the only one in Iceland in the parade!
I may of made H wait an extra twenty minutes for the stragglers in the parade, I just had to see all the dogs in their outfits! My Viking was a champ and took pictures while I pointed out all the dogs, but at some point we had to move on. So off we went in search of the next Halloween activity.
One thing I really miss about living in a big city, there is always something going on around every corner! It didn’t take H and I long to find our next spot, while just wandering around we stumbled upon an adorable farmers market packed with pumpkins.
Pumpkins make their way to Iceland each October, H even carved one with me last year, but the pumpkins in Iceland are just one size fits all found in a box in the grocery store. I have tried describing all the different sized pumpkins and squash we have back home to H, but he really needed to see it to understand, and lucky for us this farmers market with pumpkins and squash of all shapes and sizes.
I really miss the fall season in the states.
With my legs needing to rest up we called it a day and headed back towards our AirBnb. H really wanted to see trick-or-treating in action so he had plans to head back out later on. Lucky for him he didn’t have to for as soon as we turned down our street we saw trick-or-treating was in full swing on our block.
This was my favorite trick-or-treater
This was the perfect ending to our Halloween in the city. After years of me telling H about Halloween and what it was like trick-or-treating as a kid he finally got to see it all in action. While I was out trick-or-treating in my tiny hometown and not in NYC the Viking gets the idea.
And now I am wanting to head back next year decked out in an awesome costume with no marathon plans in the morning. I need to experience Halloween night in the city don’t you think?!
Question of the Day?
Did you celebrate Halloween this year?
