I Blame It On The Jet Lag

Hello from the magical purple fields of Iceland!

The Viking and I made it back to his homeland over the weekend and after sleeping for over 14 hours we are feeling somewhat normal and getting back into the swing of life in Iceland. We didn’t get up to much this weekend but we did enjoy a lovely dinner with some of my friends and a quick hike which has helped take the sting out of the hard goodbye I had to say to my family.

I know every trip at some point has to come to an end but I really did not want my time at home with my family to ever end. Our time back in Oregon this summer was wonderful, one of those trips that I will look back on for years and just smile. The goodbye with my family this past weekend, that was rough. Like I ugly cried at the airport kinda rough.

Now that I have had a few days to sleep off my jet lag and get used to not being back home with my family I am on a mission this week to shake myself out of my funk and jump right back into life in Iceland. The fact that I am sitting outside in a tank top writing this post helps. Dear Icelandic weather please keep staying nice!

H and I have the next week off before we have to head back to work and we are taking full advantage of our time with lots of adventures around Iceland planned. Between Oregon, Hawaii, and our upcoming Iceland trips I have lots to share with you all so get ready for tons of recap posts to head your way.

For now my goal is to get myself back into routine, catch up on blog stuff, and shake off the last of these homesick blues before I have to start work next week. I know these feelings are normal and all part of expat life, but gosh why can’t I just pack up everyone and bring them with me?! Until I can figure that out I am just going to take things one day at a time and focus on the positive things around me.

So this post really doesn’t have a point other than to tell you I am back in Iceland, I had a really hard time saying goodbye to my family and miss them dearly, and to share some pretty pictures of the hike I did this morning.

Oh well, its Monday and I blame it on the jet lag. Next time I will try and be more coherent when I come to write a post. Until then enjoy some pictures of the beautiful hike the Viking and I did this morning.

Spot the Kiki?

Nothing like some fresh air and time with beautiful nature to kick off a Monday! Best part about this new to us hike, it was less than ten minutes from our house! It seems like the Icelandic nature really came to life while we were in Oregon so I am looking forward to more Icelandic summer fun this next week. No better way to get out of a funk than to explore the area around you right?!

And with that I am off to do some more exploring, and probably sleeping, jet lag is still getting to me:) Have a great week everyone!

Question of the Day?
How do you deal with jet lag? What is your favorite way to spend a sunny summer day?

I can only imagine the jet lag going from the West Coast back to Iceland! What kind of flowers are those? They look like bluebonnets :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The jet lag is tough but I think with the long summer days it wasn’t to bad this time around. The flowers are called lúpína I love all the fields covered in them right now!

leaving sucks! your attitude is so much better than mine though, i ignore all the positive things and just cry about how much i miss home and hate the US. a week later, i don’t mind it so much haha. i hope the weather stays lovely for you!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

When I came home after our trip to Oregon for Christmas I was so negative it was really tough coming back to Iceland! Thankfully this time has been a bit easier with the nice weather, I just hope it stays around!

  • http://simplicityrelished.com/ Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I love that photo of you hiding in the flowers!! And I don’t do well with jetlag.. I give in to sleep, even in the middle of the day, which I’m sure perpetuates the problem!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am loving all the fields of the purple flowers! Ha I tend to give in as well but this time around I really tried to stay awake, it worked with only a few naps :)

  • http://www.embusyliving.com Emily of Em Busy Living

Your hike was gorgeous! I can see where that would help you get past all of the sadness of leaving home.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Iceland really bloomed when we were gone it is so beautiful right now!

  • http://www.gorjaeous.com/ Jae

Who’s taking tabs on coherent posts such as this? Not this girl! Jet lag does makes you do silly things (other than staying up all night, and awake during the day lol)!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Jae :) Jet lag really does make you do crazy things!

Well welcome back to this side of the world! And I know exactly what you mean, I do lots of crying/mediation, walking, writing, and reading. It’s an ongoing process really, there are no recipes but to keep moving forward. Bet that with those kind of hikes it will get better <3

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think keeping in mind that it is a process is super important as well just knowing its okay to cry about it makes me feel better:) Hope your having a wonderful summer dear!

Leaving your family sucks especially after having such a good time whilst you were in Oregon. I can see why you love living in Iceland, it is so beautiful and just spending time in that place would be enough to shake off any kind of funk I am in. As for dealing with jet leg I just tend to stay busy so I don’t fall asleep ha!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really can be so tough! But Iceland is so beautiful so it helps shake me out of my funk for sure! And yes! Our first day home I tried to stay busy all day otherwise I would have fallen asleep ha.

Ugh it really is! Thanks dear:)

Family goodbyes are the worst of the worst. You have my sympathies! At least Iceland is being kind to you upon your return. That hike looks stunning! As for jetlag, as much sunlight on your retinas during the daytime will help reprogram your circadian rhythms. That and no daytime naps and you’ll be right in no time!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Family goodbyes really are just so tough! But yes, so happy that Iceland is being nice with the beautiful weather!

Missing family and then leaving them after a visit is tough, I know. Sending you a big hug. What a beautiful hike though.

This place looks so familiar! I feel like I’ve been here… Is this the spot that at one time had all the stacked stone piles?? I love all of your Iceland posts. :) I’m sure it was so nice to be back home for a bit. It’s so hard to leave family after a trip. The time always seems to go by so quickly!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

This hike is in Mosfellsbær right outside of Reykjavik, such a beautiful place. They do have a few stacked stone piles but most of the hiking paths have them, but it could be the place you were! Thanks so much Amanda, glad your enjoying following along!

Very pretty photos! Good luck getting back into your routine. I had a very hard time saying goodbye to family when I left them to live in Europe for 6 months.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Goodbyes are tough but at least we get to live somewhere amazing and explore!

  • http://writergirlm.com/ Martha

Man, how gorgeous! It looks like the summer kind of makes up for the long, long winters.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! I have to soak up every second of summer I can so I can be ready for the long winters!

  • http://adventitiousviolet.com/ Camila @ AdventitiousViolet

Aw it’s always so tough to leave home! At least you’re with your Viking in a beautiful place and the weather is nice :) Sending good vibes!x p.s. I know this is random but your hiking boots seem lovely, is it a particular brand?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So very true, thanks so much for the positive vibes! So my hiking boots, they are karrimor, not sure if it is some special brand or not but I really like them:)

Goodbyes always suck! I ugly cried so bad at the train station when I said goodbye to my dad after his trip to visit us here in France. It’s hard but it reminds me how grateful I am to have such wonderful family in the first place :) Iceland sure is looking beautiful upon your return!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Man goodbyes are so tough, I don’t think they will ever get easier but your right it just means we have some amazing family!

  • http://www.nomadnotebook.com/ Lizzy

Sorry the goodbyes were hard- that sucks, although it’s good to be able to look forward to your next trip home whenever that may be! The weather in Iceland looks so beautiful. Fresh air definitely helps me with jet lag :)

Leaving was so hard! I’m just trying to persuade people to move where I am because it would be easier… yeah, haven’t had much success with that but it would solve all the problems. Good luck… hope you have a nice and easy acclimation back to Iceland-life. Hugs!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Same here! Maybe one day we will get a few people move to us! Thanks so much Cynthia:)

  • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

Wow Iceland looks stunning, that first picture is gorgeous! Saying goodbye is the worst and no matter how many times I do it I never get any better at it and it doesn’t get any easier. I’ve not experienced jet lag much, but when I have I’ve never nailed it - it seems to throw me off course for days!x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Iceland is really in full summer beauty right now I am loving it! Goodbyes really are the worst and don’t get easier, I think time is the only thing that helps me.

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chicadeedee

glad you at least came back to some nice weather! lessens the sting a bit. I’m not looking forward to the goodbyes to my family in a few weeks and I haven’t even gone on my trip yet! I’m gonna try to take your advice from your last post and just think about the now not the end.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know, those darn goodbyes can really be so tough! I think for me it is hard when I start thinking that I won’t be home for xxx months, then I start stressing out. But I try and remind myself I can go home if I need to and I will see them all again soon. Hope you have the best trip back home!

  • Steph Gregerson

It’s crazy seeing all the green. How beautiful! Welcome home :)
