When I’m Not Home For The Holidays…

Unlocking Kiki, Iceland

Hey there friends, Happy Friday!

That face up there, that is my I am so glad its Friday face. Cute right?

Really though, that face, that is the face I give the Viking to let him know he has hit the limit with how many pictures I am willing to smile for. You can only rock a beautiful smile for so many shots you know, it is exhausting work.

This photo shoot though, it was all about the cupcake, which I worked like a pro if I do say so myself.

I am clearly a pretty focused eater. The Viking made sure to take several pictures with the cupcake and I, you know I like to keep my options open.

I call this one the deer in the headlights look.

You can see the pictures that made the cut over here. And if you are visiting Iceland and looking for a cute spot with some tasty treats check out 17 Sortir.

In other news, did you guys catch my two year anniversary celebration earlier this week?! I took a cupcake ocean side for a photo shoot just for that post, I went all out to celebrate this little blog of mine. There is a fun giveaway going on too, it ends today so don’t forget to enter for your chance to win some Icelandic treats!

So, my brain, it is quite scattered at the moment. (if you couldn’t already tell from that introduction!) To be honest the holiday blues have hit me hard this week. Thankfully my Viking has been all over helping me shaking my holiday blues, from a weekend adventure to movie dates he has been a champ. If only I could convince him to write a blog post than he would be a real winner. Just kidding, he is the best, and I am going to attempt to write about some life happenings with my brain ramble. Here we go.

Thanksgiving |Happy belated Thanksgiving to all my American readers out there! I hope you all had a wonderful day filled with delicious food and loved ones.

I will be honest, my Thanksgiving day was a rough one, not being home for the holidays are really hard for me. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful family to miss, they are all just the best and I miss them so much. I may or may not have spent my Thanksgiving browsing flight options for a Christmas trip home, why do they have to be so expensive over the holidays?!

Even though I couldn’t be back home with my family I was still surrounded with my Icelandic family who I am so thankful for. My co-workers are the best and listened to my random stories about past Thanksgivings while I showed them pictures of my family, did I mention I was crying this whole time. Ya,I was a pretty sight yesterday.

And then there is my Viking, how lucky I am to have him around, he made sure to spoil me and make me feel extra loved. So even though I am feeling sad this Thanksgiving I am also feeling incredibly thankful for all that I have and all those amazing people in my life.

Friendsgiving |About those amazing people in my life. I got to enjoy a lovely Friendsgiving meal with some of them last weekend. I remember when I first moved to Iceland I was just hoping that to make one new friend. Now, two years later here I am having Friendsgiving surrounded with so many lovely friends. A big thanks to my friend Jeannie for being brave and cooking a turkey inside a tiny European oven, it was delicious! A great evening with tasty food and lovely company, what Thanksgiving is all about.

Reykjavik’s most unique art display |For the location of my very important two year blogiversary cupcake photo shoot (what a mouthful that is!) H and I headed off to a place that I spent way to many Saturday mornings at running on the trails during marathon training. During these runs I would always see this house that looked like some crazy art museum. Come to find out, it is a house that some artist lives at, and he has just created his home into some unique art exhibit. I don’t even know how to describe this place, just look at the pictures.

Interesting right?!

Dark winter days |You guys, the days, they are dark! I don’t even remember the last time I saw daylight. Okay I do, it has been two weeks and a day, it was a beautiful sunny Thursday, and we haven’t seen the sun since. It’s not like the dark winter days are anything new here in Iceland, but those first few weeks of adjusting to them, they are rough. I feel like I could sleep 12 hours every day, my bed time keeps coming sooner and sooner. At least the Christmas lights are being put up around town to brighten things up. Now we just need some snow and things won’t seem so dark!

Northern Lights | One thing that has been brightening up these dark winter days, the Northern Lights! We have had some amazing Northern Lights so far this year, I feel so lucky to live somewhere that gets to see them. I remember the first time I learned about the Northern Lights, it was from that movie Balto (anyone else see this movie) and i thought they were the most amazing things ever. Never did I think that 20 years later I would be living somewhere that I could see the Northern Lights from my backyard!

Other life happenings in Iceland, tonight is our office Christmas party, bring on the tasty food, we have snow on the weekend forecast which means I am planning on staying on my couch, and I have not even started writing my Christmas shopping list! If only shipping to Iceland wasn’t so expensive I could take advantage of all these black Friday sales!

Speaking of sales, if you have a watch on your Christmas shopping list be sure to check out Daniel Wellington and use the code KIKI15 for a 15% discount until January 15th.

And, today is a special day, it is my baby sister’s 18th birthday, Happy Birthday Madisen I love you!

Question of the Day?
Did you celebrate Thanksgiving this year? How is your Christmas shopping going?

Reading this I was thinking to myself that I actually didn’t get too upset about not being home for Thanksgiving this year, and then I realized that I just wrote the most grumpy, snarky blog post ever. Soo maybe I’m not dealing with this as well as I thought. Being away during the holidays is the dumbest - I’m glad that at least your Viking could spoil you extra much to make up for it!

Big hugs to you! I know how hard it can be to not be home for the holidays so I’m glad you had your Viking by your side. xxx

Aw, well I’m glad you’ve got a party and snow coming your way! Sometimes those off-beat Thanksgivings are the most memorable, at least they were for me. That last photo of the Northern Lights is just UNREAL! So beautiful! And ohhh yes, I definitely remember Balto :)

I’m kind of thankful that my holidays were always so low-key (ie. just celebrated with my parents) so I really never missed the holidays that much. Although on second thought, that may just be my cold, cold heart ;)

My friend and I have the theory that Europe gets really into Christmas lights to combat the darkness haha. It gets me down even as far “south” as England so I can only imagine how rough the lack of sunlight is in Iceland! (Although you won’t find me complaining about the super long summer days)

I’m sorry that you couldn’t be home for Thanksgiving but at least you were surrounded by friends and love ones! And I can’t believe how dark it gets in Iceland. I thought that the sun setting at 5pm where I live was early!

I totally understand being thousands of miles away while your family celebrates a holiday together…it’s not the easiest! Also, those Northern Lights are AMAZING.

We had all the children and grandchildren over except Gayle’s family who are now in Michigan. Skype helps, but……

If you want a good dose of holiday cheer (plus a few tears), go the Children’s Christmas Concert at Harpa. It was wonderful last year, including Silent Night in the “original” Icelandic. Merry Christmas!

I remember how hard it was to be away for Thanksgiving when I was living in Spain! It’s never easy to be away from loved ones during the holidays. But I also did a friendsgiving and it really really helped! Reminded me of how many people I had in Spain that I could share special occasions with. And what a pleasure it must be to see the Northern Lights from where you live! So jealous!

I can’t imagine spending the holidays away from my family, it’s so great that you’ve come up with some wonderful new traditions over in Iceland to keep your mind of it! I hope you get some sunshine again soon, but in the meantime, I don’t think I’d ever get sick of those Northern Lights!

For what it’s worth, I think you’re incredibly brave to live so far from home during the holiday season. As much as I would love to travel (and Fedora still wants to come to Iceland), I know in my heart I’d be a depressed mess in all the worst ways, being so far away in the winter. I’m so glad your Viking and your friends and coworkers are such excellent people. :)
Also- I had no idea you could see the Northern lights so clearly even with light pollution around! I remember them in Balto, and in every shot I’ve seen of them it was the middle of the wilderness. So I assumed, as with stars, they’re really only visible if there’s no other light around. How cool that they’re there, visible with the naked eye even in a city!
I hope you get snow soon. It does always help, as long as you’re not dealing with treacherous ice.
