How Do They Do That

I am constantly amazed by the variety of fashion I see here in Reykjavik. Lets just say going to Ikea in jeans and tennis shoes is not acceptable attire here. With all the different fashion trends I see I find myself wondering how in the world they pull it them off?

So today I am linking up with Jackie to share this list inspired by the beautiful women of Iceland and all the crazy fashion trends they pull off, all of which I can never get quite right.

Jade and Oak

..Wear black tights with jean shorts and look incredibly chic

..Look fashionable even in those thick winter jackets. I look like a marshmallow!

..Walk around in ridiculously high heels in the middle of winter and not fall on the ice. I wore heels once this winter, it looked something like this..

..Draw in their eyebrows, often times black even if they have blonde hair, and not end up looking like a clown. I just don’t get it!

..Never seem to be cold when they are wearing barely there tights during a snow storm. I wear 5 layers and I am still freezing!

..Keep their hair in place when the wind is blowing like crazy. I step outside and my hair looks like it has never been brushed before once the wind hits it.

..Pull off wearing several different non-matching colors at once. I try creating my own multicolored outfits, it doesn’t work out so well.

..Wear perfectly applied makeup to the gym and not seem to smear any of it during their workout. If I have even a bit of mascara on it will be all over my face by the end of my workout guaranteed.

..All own exactly the same black winter coat. Is this an unwritten law in Iceland I don’t know about?

One day I will figure some of these things out. That will be the day when I know I am becoming Icelandic!

Question of the Day?
What is something you wonder how people pull off?

The heels! That is the exact same here in the winter on cobble stone streets pushing a baby stroller. Maybe the stroller adds stability? I have no idea how Lithuanian women do it! For now I’m just ticking to flats.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Those are so brave women!

  • http://www.travel-vanberry.blogspot.com/ VanBerry @ On the Road again

I wondered about the heels in Tromso as well. And the fact that they are able to run down a hill on icy streets (WTF???) without falling whereas I already slipped and fell on a perfectly even street :D

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Seriously it must be in their blood I don’t know how they aren’t falling all over the place when walking in the snow and ice.

  • http://www.gutenblogyall.com/ Margo

How ANYone can wear heels for more than a few hours is beyond me. Even on a flat surface, I just can’t do it. Flats or bust, I say.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Haha agreed!

  • http://www.ivorypomegranate.com/ Kirstin Schrier

Biking in skirts or dresses here in Ghent, I don’t understand how it’s comfortable and how it doesn’t reveal everything!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me either! I bike everyday to work and I wear these goofy rain pants over to not reveal anything but no other ladies seem to have this issue!

  • http://confuzzledom.wordpress.com/ bevchen

I look like the Michelin man in my winter jacket.. a black version, with an eskimo hood (that I can’t actually see past when it’s up because it’s HUGE!).

Tights under shorts just look wrong to me, no matter who’s wearing them. Shorts are for summer… tights are for winter. If you don’t want to wear trousers in winter, invest in some skirts!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, I just don’t get the tights and shorts look!

  • http://megantofrancewithlove.blogspot.com/ Megan

I’ve thought many of the same things here in France, especially the same black coat, it seems like all girls here are carbon copies of each other, they all dress the exact same way. It’s really weird. And of course the heels, ladies be crazy.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Basically all black is the daily attire of the girls here so it quickly makes them all look the same!

  • http://sophieinclogs.com Sophie

I feel the same way about Dutch girls! They wear hears everywhere, even when cycling; they can get totally rained on and still look amazing and as if they just did their makeup; AND they always seem so put together wherever they go, library and gym included. At this point I’ve resigned myself to being the ‘alternative’ or ‘grungy’ one in my friend group :p

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right! I feel totally the same its like they have their own fashion and beauty team following them around and then there is me!

  • http://www.diariesofanessexgirl.com/ Kate Hall

Haha, this made me chuckle. Fortunately, Germans generally don’t dress as ‘chic’ as other Europeans, they are a little more like we are in England, however it depends what area you are in. I live in a pretty nice area here (au pair perks!) and I have found that I constantly dress up now. I don’t remember the last time I wore trainers/sneakers. I miss it, but I just feel so ‘scrubby’ compared to the people in my area and the city centre!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I feel like everyone looks so lazy when I visit back home, my wardrobe has definitely upgrading since moving here!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Ha, contrary to Katie, I’ve actually found that Londoners are incredibly fashion forward for the most part and I just can’t compete! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

The fun thing is I know I can wear something a bit crazy and fit in just fine!

  • Steph Gregerson

I just found your blog through the link up. Don’t mind if I stalk all your past posts about Iceland. We are planning a trip there this fall and I’m beyond excited.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

How exciting, how long will you be in Iceland for? Yes feel free to ask me any questions you may have as well:)

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

seriously, all of these things apply to me in England as well. Tights and shorts? How come I can’t pull this off?! I’d have so many more outfit choices.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right! Ha I have tried to pull off the tights and shorts look, it just does not work on me.

  • http://anothercleanslate.com/ Kate @ Another Clean Slate

I can never figure out how to make my eyebrows look right. I give up!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

My eyebrows have their own minds and I am decided I can not control them, I give up as well!

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

I do not think I have worn heeled shoes once since moving to Sweden and I am just fine with it! My sister in law twisted her ankle so bad on New Years from heels and ice and I all I wanted to do was say duhhhhhhh

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha! When I was out on New Years I did see a few girls do the ankle rolls on the ice but then just kept on walking, I would have been out for the night for sure!

  • http://www.alwaysashten.com/ Ashten@alwaysashten

I also wonder how people can pull off different colored tights. I look like a clown.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I so badly want to wear all these fun colored tights but it just doesn’t work!

  • Lisa @ Ameliorer la Vie

Yes!! I wondered the same thing about Korean women when I lived over there. They would walk LONG distances in heels. Just looking at them do it hurt my feet.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Whenever I try and wear heels for long periods of time I regret it quite quickly and wish I had a pair of flats in my purse!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

Heels and ice x1000: the Russians do it better than anyone and it’s CONFOUNDING.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is some superpower they have!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

Oh my gosh I actually HAVE black hair and even I can’t pull off black eyebrows, haaha! They say you’re supposed to go 2 shades lighter if you have dark hair. I tried black when I first dyed my hair… NOT A GOOD LOOK ON ME! haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Whenever I am at the airport about to fly to Iceland I can always guess who the Icelandic women are based on their eyebrows, just crazy how dark they go and how they seem to pull them off!

  • http://www.bohemianjourneys.blogspot.com/ Cheyenne

    That’s just crazy!
Wearing 5 inch heels in every weather, I totally wonder how some women do that.
    xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, it makes my feet hurt just watching them walk around.

  • http://www.adeecodedlife.com/ Dee

LOL @ the high heels gif! I also don’t get how women can wear high heels and walk everywhere! I can’t handle the pain!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I start complaining quite quickly if I am wearing heels. Flats are the way to go!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

Hahaha this is so funny and so many things have me wondering the exact same thing - how do they do it and why don’t I get it? The high heels gif is amazing! And the eyebrows? I see that a little bit around the place but I swear that one I’ll never understand!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I don’t understand the eyebrows at all, and why they go so dark is beyond me!

  • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

but seriously, who can walk in heels at any time? I just don’t get it

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Seriously! It must be a superpower they inherit!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy Dorn

Yeah drawn on eyebrows is a weird one. We were out the other day at a pub and saw a girl wearing a sweater as a skirt! The arms were just hanging. It was weird!?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

What! Haha really that is so weird, I hope you got a picture of that!

  • http://www.jadeoak.com/ jackie jade
