Hollywood Comes to Iceland

First off a big thank you to everyone for all the encouraging comments on yesterdays post! The sense of community and support is what I love so much about blogging, you all are the best and I am ready to tackle my job search head on after all your positive words!

Now on to todays post where I am joining forces with Ben Stiller, aka Walter Mitty, to show you some beautiful places to visit in Iceland.

The-Secret-Life-of-Walter-Mitty1

Iceland has been playing a supporting role in Hollywood for years, most of the time being used as a magical land or dubbed as other places. A few on the list that have been filmed in Iceland are Oblivion, Prometheus, Stardust, and the popular television series Game of Thrones. This year though the new Ben Stiller movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has made it no secret (pun intended) about its filming here in Iceland. I finally had the chance to see Iceland on the big screen and the scenery was nothing but impressive!

In the movie Walter Mitty travels to several places such as Greenland, Iceland, Afghanistan and the Himalayas. Spoiler alert, all of these scenes were actually filmed in Iceland! Good luck not falling in love with Iceland after seeing this movie! Here are of the locations shown in the movie because I know you will want to add them to your travel list as soon as you finish the movie.

Stykkishólmur

Stykkisholmur-2

In the film this small Icelandic fishing town in the east of Iceland plays the role of Nuuk, Greenland. Another fun Icelandic fact, the actor who plays the role of the drunk pilot Walter Mitty meets is actually a famous Icelandic actor, Ólafur Darri, Iceland is all over this movie!

Seyðísfjörður

Seyðísfjörður

Some of the most beautiful scenery in the movie I think is when Walter Mitty is skate boarding down a windy road in the Iceland countryside which was filmed near Seyðísfjörður.In the movie you see Walter heading down into the valley shown below. Just look at all those vibrant colors, so beautiful it almost makes me want to try my hand at skateboarding down into the valley.

Grundarfjörður

Providing the setting for when Walter Mitty is riding on his bicycle is the beautiful area of Grundarfjörður located in the north of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, which is in the west of Iceland. With views like this I wouldn’t mind bicycling around either!

In this picture Walter Mitty is climbing up what is said in the film to be the Himalayas. This scene was actually filmed in, you guessed it, Iceland.

If you do make it over to Iceland I definitely recommend making a visit to at least some of these places, you won’t be disappointed.

I agree I wasn’t expecting the movie to be amazing but knew I had to see it to check out all the pretty shots of Iceland. I can’t wait to explore more of the country this year!

OMG i swear, these photos are incredible. nature is at its best when hardly untouched by humans.

toronto is also a city that is often used by movie producers. we are usually dubbed as New York City or some other busy metropolis.

I agree Iceland has so much natural beauty I love it! Crazy how easily movie producers can trick you into thinking the movie is somewhere its actually not! Unless that is if your from the area they are using then your onto their tricks.

I’ve heard great things about this movie. Definitely want to see it since it includes travel!! Iceland has been on my list as a possible destination this summer. We’ll just have to see! Looks beautiful!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes, go see the movie and then you will be booking your tickets to Iceland while the end credits are rolling!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Iceland is insanely beautiful in photos! i can’t wait to see it in person one day! Wait time of year do you recommend as the best time to visit? x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I recommend coming in June or July as the best time to visit. Then you get better weather, always a plus, as well as the midnight sun so you can have endless days of exploring the country!

      • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Does it bother you having so many daylight hours? I would feel like I was going a little bit insane, I fear! x

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think the mornings are starting to get to me a bit but when the sun does shine it makes you so happy. The days when it is gloomy all day (like today) make it a bit hard, lots of candles, vitamin D and baking help from going to insane:)

I want to see this movie purely for the backdrop now!

So cool to see movie scenes from your neck of the woods, isn’t it? A lot of films have been done in Detroit lately and I love seeing places I know and have been to!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t it so fun, makes you feel like your really in the movie since you know exactly where they are!

So I haven’t seen the movie, I have a real issue with Ben Stiller… like I need to punch him in the face. I have no idea why, I just hate him and can not sit through one of his movies. Haha.

    • http://www.tobagowoman.com/ TobagoWoman

I always thought that am the only one in the world, who felt that way about Stiller. Something about him, just makes me Cringe!

      • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

Kate, can totally relate. Nicolas Cage is my Ben Stiller. Can’t stand him!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha, I hear ya I def have those actors that I can’t stand watching. Not going to lie if the movie wasn’t filmed in mostly in Iceland I don’t think I would have seen it, I couldn’t stand the previews for the movie but it was so fun seeing all the places in Iceland:)

Iceland looks very beautiful. Brings back so much fond memories of my time in Norway. Though I have to admit, from your pictures, Iceland seems to have the edge.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Glad I could bring back some good memories:) Norway is def on my list of places to visit to I have heard how beautiful it is!

  • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

I saw this movie the other day. Not bad. I was expecting more because they were saying it was the next Forest Gump - nowhere near. Scenery was AMAZING though!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh man no way, this movie has nothing on Forest Gump! The scenery is what makes the movie, at least I think so :)
