8 Things You Should Know About The Icelandic Horse

I don’t know what I love more about our road trips around Iceland, the stunning landscape or the Icelandic horses.

It is a tough call!

Icelandic Horses

Warning, this post is full of horse pictures and facts, if you don’t like horses this post is probably not for you, but I dare you to not fall in love with the Icelandic horses!

A few weekends ago H and I were heading back home from a perfect fall day at Thingvellir when we drove past a field of horses. I told H the next horse we saw we had to stop and say hello, that would just be the cherry on top of our already wonderful day.

Not even a few minutes later I was getting my happy ending with the most adorable horse in Iceland. This horse seriously had so much personality, it was like playing with a big dog!

Now I am not a horse crazy person (I am that crazy dog lady though) but here I am writing an entire post about horse facts. I blame it on George the horse (yes I just made that name up for him). I just couldn’t not share all the pictures we took of George and figured a post full of horse facts was a good excuse to get to use all my pictures of George the horse.

But really, the Icelandic horses are pretty neat animals. So lets just call this a fun fact Friday post and get to talking about the Icelandic horses.

1. The Icelandic horse is one of the purest horse breeds in the World

2. The Icelandic horse has five different gaits, two of which are specific to the Icelandic horse the tolt and flying pace. I won’t even attempt to explain the specifics of these two gaits, but if you are interested here is a good description.

3. Once an Icelandic horse leaves Iceland it is not allowed to enter back into the country.

4. Icelandic horses have heavy double layer coats to help protect them from the harsh Icelandic climate. I have always wondered if they were cold out there! Now I know they are not freezing like I always was thinking!

5. Icelandic horses are usually not ridden until the age of 4. Since they live to such an old age there is no rush in riding them. The oldest Icelandic horse lived to be 56 years old!

6. The Icelandic horses are short and have similar characteristics to a pony, but they are definitely not a pony and are sensitive if you call them that.

7. The Icelandic horse comes in many colors, they can appear in up to 42 different color combinations! Some types of Icelandic horses coats even change color by seasons.

8. Icelandic horses have a lively temperament and love being around people. Because of their love for people they excel as therapy horses. And who wouldn’t want to cuddle with these adorable animals?!

It won’t take you long to discover that Icelandic horses really do love people, just pull over near a horse field and they will quickly run over to say hello. And if you are taking some pictures be prepared for them to get up and close for their photo op.

Icelandic Horses

I just love the Icelandic horses.

A road trip in Iceland really isn’t complete without petting an Icelandic horse or two. I recommend stopping whenever you see horses, this may make your road trip longer, but it is worth it! And in the spring time when the babies are out playing in the field be prepared for a cuteness overload!

If you want to spend even more time with the Icelandic horses I recommend looking into a horse riding tour. riding on one of the cute Icelandic horses thorough the lava fields, that really is one story you won’t tire of telling!

Question of the Day?

What is your favorite animal? Would you go horseback riding in Iceland?

Isn’t that interesting, I had no idea either about that!

  • http://www.notentirelyperfect.com/ Stephanie

They are so pretty. I love horses. How come they can’t come back?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Since the Icelandic horses have only ever been around the one breed once they leave the country they can’t come back since they will be around other horse breeds and diseases. They also do this to prevent any mixing of the breeds. I thought it was so sad when I first heard this!

awwww i want an icelandic horse! but i would never dream of taking one out of iceland, especially since they can’t come back?! poor horses! george is beautiful! i can’t believe they live so long, that is amazing. i’m seriously so sad that they aren’t allowed back in the country if they leave.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know right, so sad! There are actually a lot of Icelandic horse farms in the states, especially in Kentucky, so I guess at least they have friends there. But poor horses!

      • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

wait, really? I’m in KY! I could see one! But. KY also has a ‘Kentucky down under’ so, I don’t really trust the authenticity haha.

I would be happy getting to pet one of these cuties everyday:)

  • Eric Brink

Gayle’s favorite animal is the Penguin, of which we’re planning a trip to Argentina to see them in the wild. My favorite animal story is being chased off a research site in Churchill Manitoba by a Polar Bear! They may be cute, but unlike an Icelandic Horse they are not cuddly! :) I continue to be impressed on how well you take advantage of your stay here. Horses, puffins, and all those cats in Reykjavik…. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That sounds like an amazing trip! Thanks so much Eric :)

Awe I love these pictures! I had no idea Icelandic horses were so pretty and fluffy! I learned a lot of facts too that I didn’t know before.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I remember the first time I saw them I thought they were just ponies, I had no idea there was an Icelandic horse and that they were so cute and interesting!

  • http://www.fullofbeansandsausages.com/ Holly Hollyson

I love them! The Icelandic pony is what gave me my love for super long manes and tails!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

They are so easy to love!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

56 years old is crazy and amazing! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Isn’t that crazy old!

  • http://expatedna.com/ Edna

Wait why can’t they go back to Iceland? That’s interesting. When we were there in August we rode some because my bf’s sister-in-law grew up with horses in New Zealand, she told us all about the tolt…my horse was just really slow though and my bf’s horse kept trying to eat everything in its path!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Since the Icelandic horses have only ever been around the one breed once
they leave the country they can’t come back since they will be around
other horse breeds and diseases. They also do this to prevent any mixing
of the breeds. I thought it was so sad when I first heard this! My first time riding in Iceland my horse bit H’s leg!

      • http://expatedna.com/ Edna

Oh that makes sense! But it is kind of sad, like they’re exiled from Iceland :/

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

          I know right, poor horses!

  • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

You can just see how thick their coats our in these photos, it’s no wonder they aren’t getting cold!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know right! They need those extra thick coats to stay warm!

  • http://www.smalltownsandcitylights.com/ Rachel @ STCL

They’re too cute! So crazy that they’re not allowed back in the country once they leave.. I wonder why?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

They are so cute I just love them ;) Since the Icelandic horses have only ever been around the one breed once hey leave the country they can’t come back since they will be around other horse breeds and diseases. Poor horses, it is sad but makes sense since they want to keep the breed pure.

  • http://dzdogadventures.blogspot.com/ DZ DogAdventures

So adorable!! Got to admit we love horses too! Gorgeous photos. :-) And WOW what an age!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you! The horses in Iceland are just too cute not to take pictures of :)

  • http://adventitiousviolet.com/ Camila @ AdventitiousViolet

Oh my gosh they look so fluffy - I’m definitely charmed! And how rude that they aren’t allowed to come back - like some human takes them away and they aren’t allowed to come back, heartbreaking!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know right! I thought it was so sad when I heard that too!
