Iceland’s Golden Circle Winter Edition

As I mentioned yesterday this past weekend we had some friends visiting Iceland from London. While they were here we of course had to take them to the Golden Circle and I was more than excited myself to see all the beautiful sites in the winter. When we were headed out that morning though and this was the color of the sky I will admit I was less than thrilled to be spending a day outside.

Golden Circle Drive
These clouds were so dark and between the wind, rain/snow and cold it wasn’t the best day to be visiting the Golden Circle. Our friends were really excited to see everything though so in true Icelandic style we just talked about how crazy the weather was as we were walking outside in it.

This is my I am so excited to be out walking around in the freezing cold and rain face.

Golden Circle Iceland
Even though the weather was terrible we still made the most of it and went to all the stops along the Golden Circle. With the snow covering everything it made it look like a winter wonderland and we got some beautiful photos.

Þingvellir
Pingvellir
Not as colorful as in the summer but still beautiful in its own wintery way. This was are first stop of the day and it was during the worst part of the storm so we didn’t stay long to take more pictures.

On our way to our next stop we saw these adorable horses so we of course had to stop and take pictures with them.

From my experience Icelandic horses are really friendly and tend to run right up to people when you walk up to the fence. So if your ever wandering around Iceland and see some of these adorable horses be sure to go up to the fence and give them a pat, they especially enjoy apples :)

Geysir
Geysir
When you get into the parking lot for the Geysir your greeted with this view which I think looks so cool with all the steam in the air and the snowy mountain in the background. There was hardly any people visiting the Geysir (big surprise given the weather) so we basically had the whole place to ourselves which is a rare thing to find, especially in the summer months.

Winter Geysir
Geysir in the Winter
Geysir in the Winter
I love all the colors in this photo, such vibrant green and blue colors mixed with the reddish brown of the ground and the white of the snow all topped off with the steam, so beautiful.

Gullfoss
By the time we arrived at Gullfoss I was pretty well soaked through my three layers and ready to head home but I am so glad we didn’t skip out on seeing this waterfall in all its winter glory.

Gullfoss
Gullfoss
Even though it was not the best weather to be out exploring in I am so glad I finally got to see the Golden Circle with its winter coat on. Just be sure to bring snacks, wear lots of layers, and bring someone to take all your pictures for you since you won’t want to take your gloves off. A big thanks to H for being my photographer for the day!

The pictures of Gullfoss..wow. And strangely another blogger I follow posted about it over the weekend! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Gullfoss was the main stop I was looking forward to! What a small world, I hope they had an amazing trip even though the weather was quite bad.

It all looks so beautiful. The light is magical. Definitely worth getting cold for! [easy for me to say whilst I sit in the warm typing! : D]

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha no I agree it was totally worth being cold for to see those beautiful views!

Iceland never lets me down with beautiful landscapes:)

I have been following summer by jumping hemispheres. I do appreciate the beauty of winter, but I never have the gear to truly enjoy the cold. I love that blogging can put someone in Uruguay in contact with someone in Iceland! Your horse pictures made me go re-watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekr05T9Iaio

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh this is so cute, I love the Icelandic horses they are so adorable. I agree I would much rather travel in a bit warmer climate but seeing some things during winter is quite beautiful! Isn’t the blogging world just great, connecting people from all over!

Iceland looks amazing. I love the geyser pictures. I prefer a bit of both winter and summer travel. We lived in Alaska for 3 years and while winter was cold, and often very dark, winter was so beautiful and when the sun was shining, it was really shining. We had amazing sunsets and if the conditions were right, the northern lights. But, on the other hand, the summer midnight sun was to die for. I loved going camping and being able to sit around a campfire with friends not knowing, or caring, what time it was because the sun was still shining.
Stopping by to say hello from Travel Tuesday! Have a good week :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I totally agree, even though the dark winter days are not fun knowing that the summer midnight sun is coming makes it so worth it! Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week as well:)

wow it looks so gorgeous! and though it was freezing, i’m sure it’s nice to have the views to yourself!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Sometimes being cold is worth it, sometimes:) But it was nice to see everything in its winter beauty!

  • http://www.alwaysashten.com/ Ashten@alwaysashten

I’m in awe of you. I can’t imagine living in this kind of cold all the time! <3

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Sometimes I think how in the heck have I not frozen to death yet! But there is always wine to keep you warm, and all the Icelandic hot water!

  • Annie Montgomery

Even though its fuh-reezing, it’s nice when friends visit so they can get you outta the house and visit those crazy-cool sights! Your area is way more majestic than mine, so I’ll just live vicariously through your photos..as I sit with my blanket ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha yes stay warm and enjoy the chilly photos. I agree though having people visit lets you get to be a tourist in your own city and it can be so fun!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

Love the photos — looks like even bad weather doesn’t get in the way of a gorgeous photo op there!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Sometimes I think the weather just helps add some beauty to it all, this was not what I was saying at the time when I was out in it but looking back now it was worth it:)

  • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

I love both. I like winter because the crowds are less and I hate lines, but summer is great because the days are longer and you don’t have to worry about so many layers!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Agreed! Winter is def great to beat the crowds but nothing like a long summer day, I can’t wait for the midnight summer sun to get here!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.blogspot.com/ Amanda MeeMee

I think both have their benefits but I’m definitely going to go with summer, just because I hate winter so much! haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha I am right there with you. Since I have always lived in colder areas when I think travel I think someplace warm and tropical!

  • http://www.mishfish13.com/ Michelle

Everyone is going to Iceland and it’s making me have travel envy. Stop it! But seriously, it looks like an AMAZING place to be!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is crazy how many people I hear about in Iceland as well, its the place to be apparently! Ha I know right, Iceland just can’t take a bad picture its so beautiful:)

  • Kim

Oooh! So pretty!! I totally agree about the horses…my goal when I was there this summer was to pet an icelandic horse and i made my sister stop on the side of the road and two just ran right over!! I felt bad because I felt like they were expecting an apple or something but they were so cute!!

You HAVE to go to jokulsaron!! ( i cant remember if you said you HAVE been there or WANT to go there!)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Aren’t they just so cute, I really want to go on a horseback riding trip this summer so I can spend all day with an adorable horse!

No I haven’t been yet!!! It is so on my bucket list and I am hoping to make it there this summer. Was it just as amazing as the pictures look??

  • http://heleneinbetween.com/ Helene

that is just so breathtaking! it doesn’t even look real! and sad the horses aren’t friendly- they look pretty!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Even in the middle of a winter storm Iceland looks pretty:) I was not thinking this as I was out walking in it but glad I got to see all these places with there winter coat on:)

  • http://southernbelle23.blogspot.com/ Whitney

Those are some pretty photos, but boy it looks cold there!

I like going on trips and vacation in the summer. The weather is usually more reliable, except that it is hurricane season during that time.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is cold, but I think Iceland can be deceiving and tends to be warmer than what you would think, not warm enough though!

I agree I like traveling in the summer when I can enjoy nice weather!

  • Renee Hansen

Easy question, travel in winter to somewhere warm!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think the beaches in Spain are calling my name! Great picture of my pretty Aunt and Uncle, love you guys:)

  • Rachel Murphree

Those horses! I think I’d also really geek out on the geology of Iceland. I like travelling at different times of the year, depending on the location. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Seriously I am loving learning the geology of Iceland, it is so interesting! Agree, traveling to different places at different times of the year has its benefits:)

  • http://expatedna.com/ Edna

Same exact trip I did three and a half weeks ago! Minus the ponies though :) The wind was craaazy!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Wasn’t the wind wild out there! We have been spoiled in the city and haven’t had to much wind but I got my fair share of it on the trip. So beautiful though and totally worth being cold for! Hope you had a wonderful trip:)

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

You are braver than I am, I HATE the rain, and hate being outside in it and getting drenched. It makes my bones cold.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I may have complained a bit that day:) I think growing up someplace rainy and cold makes me a bit tougher when traveling around Iceland but I prefer a sunny beach day always!

  • http://Girl-Meets-Globe.com/ Tina @ Girl-Meets-Globe

That looks so cold!!! There is something magical about seeing everything in its winter finery though!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, sometimes you just got to bundle up and see everything with its beautiful winter coat on:)

  • http://www.apartment-wife.com/ jennifer prod

oh gosh, i’m jealous of your adventures :) i live in minneapolis, so i like traveling in the winter… i still get 5 months of cold even if i’m gone awhile :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

How funny two of my friends living here are from Minneapolis! Same for me back home though, it seems like winter never ends so at least I am cold in a beautiful place!

  • http://www.bonnieroseblog.co.uk/ Bonnie Rose

I adore horses and love seeing them here in England. they are not always friendly but those ones look adorable! I’ll have to remember about the apples!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I love horses as well they are just so cute! I will be sure to keep my guard up if I am in England and see horses, being bite by a horse is never fun!
