The Never Ending Journey

Hello from Oregon!

H and I have safely arrived back home for the holidays!

Home in Oregon Minus a major case of jet lag and the slight feeling of being overwhelmed by everything returning back home after 14 months away has honestly felt like I never really left! The trip to return back home though, wow that was an adventure in itself!

Our flight was at 5 pm so we were taking things quite easy before we needed to head off to the airport. Around 10 am a light snowfall started. With the light snowfall came warnings of a major storm due to hit around noon. Major storm in Iceland, that is like a weekly event, no big deal I thought.

However around noon the storm really hit and snow was dumping down on us. Add in the huge wind gusts and you could hardly see an inch in front of you. The panic started to set in.

We wanted to be sure to have extra time to make it to the airport because of the storm so we headed off around noon to the airport shuttle bus hoping to catch an early bus and beat the storm. As soon as we stepped outside we were immediately drenched in the heavy wet snow, running with our bags trying to not trip as we made it to the car. Finally we arrived to the bus stop but when I saw the parking lot full of the shuttle buses that bad feeling in my gut only increased.

My fears where confirmed when we walked inside and where told the one and only road to the airport from Reykjavik was closed and they did not know when it would re-open, all we could do was wait. Full disclosure, I burst into tears at this point. After waiting to go home for so long the day had finally arrived and I did not know if I would even be able to go!

Winter in IcelandI spent most of these three hours pouting on the floor.

We waited for three long hours before the road finally opened back up. When we were on our way to the airport our flight was due to leave in just an hour and the time hadn’t changed on the web. Basically we didn’t know if our flight was still leaving on time and if it was we were going to miss it.

Winter in IcelandThis is the end of the storm, those turned on headlights were a welcomed sight!

Thankfully as we arrived to the airport a one hour delay showed up and we were able to breeze through check in and security to make it to our gate with plenty of time. The only issue now, we were flying out two hours late and would miss our connecting flight in Seattle.

Iceland AirportA blurry H and I on the plane waiting for takeoff which was delayed even longer due to the plane needed to be defrosted.

Finally we arrived to Seattle where we then spent the next hour in the chaos of customs. We had missed our connecting flight as well as the flight they had moved us to. As we left customs we were told to run to hopefully make it on the third flight that was headed to Portland. I am pretty sure we only got on that flight because the woman at the counter felt sorry for how sweaty and frazzled we looked but hey I didn’t care, I was finally an hour away from seeing my parents. And let me tell you it was worth the wait.

Welcome homeWelcome home

I can not watch this without tearing up!

Yes, my parents are the best. Santa cried, I cried, Mrs. Claus cried, but it was wonderful, the best reunion ever. Santa did get stopped quite a few times on the way out of the airport for pictures, talk about getting everyone in the Christmas cheer.

And that concludes my long ramble of my never ending journey home. Things have been a whirlwind since we arrived but lots of Azora and Kaelene bonding time have been happening as well.

Azora CuddlesWe are both equally happy to see each other :)

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I am looking forward to a fun weekend with my family and friends!

Question of the Day?
What is your worst travel experience? Any holiday fun plans for the weekend?

I love this, but mostly that you are finally reunited with your puppy!
Full disclosure, my worst travel experience was last winter on our way home from Europe, and I burst into tears and couldn’t stop until luckily one of our friends had Xanax, gave me a 1/4 and knocked me out. Our flight from France was late to New York and it took two hours to get our baggage and once we finally went to recheck it they wouldn’t let us even though we still had time to catch our flight. It was during the huge freeze and flights were cancelled left and right. We managed to get on the very last flight, the last two seats. And I made it home just in time for my first day of class. Horrible. And embarrassing. My poor husband did not know what to do with me.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh no, those stressful travel days are just the worse! I had to have a few glasses of wine at the airport that is for sure.

  • http://luyoutravel.blogspot.com/ Elizabeth Georgian

Yeah! I’m glad you made it home safely despite those bumps.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha thanks! Now looking at my sad face it just makes me laugh but that was a long day for sure!

Oh wow, what a trip! That snowstorm and all the delays are crazy sounding. So glad you made it safely, and aww that reunion is too sweet! Yay for doggy bonding time! I’ve never had any bad travel experiences or horrible delays, but I had a major freak out moment today when I remembered that Immigrations here in Peru is crazy and has all sorts of rules and is super unclear about Residents traveling abroad, and I thought, “what if they don’t let me out of the country?!” So we spent the morning in downtown Lima, and thankfully my paperwork is all clear. Whew.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Glad to hear your paperwork is all clear! I get a bit stressed going through immigration every time even though I have all the required paperwork. Something about those officials makes me stressed! Doggy bonding time is the best, it was so wonderful to be home!

  • http://alkeksabroad.wordpress.com/ Courtney Alkek

Oh my goodness what a trip! I know how you feel, when I was heading back to Australia once my flight got delayed due to weather and so I missed my long haul flight from San Francisco to Sydney. It was midnight by the time we got to San Fran and the next flight wasn’t until 10pm. I just wanted to get home to my husband so bad and I was stuck by myself in a random city for almost 24 hours. Oh and of course the airline didn’t provide accommodations just to add to the stress.

    http://alkeksabroad.wordpress.com

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ugh that is so frustrating! We were lucky and our connecting flight was one that went about every hour so we were still able to make it home the same night. Those stressful travel days are just no fun!

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

How cute are your parents!?!?! Totally worth the travel day from hell, but that sure sounds like one rough day. I’m so glad it all worked out in the end and hopefully your trip back will go more smoothly. I think my worst travel experience was many years ago when I flew back into England right around the time of the bombings. Security was obviously tight and I stood shoulder to shoulder in customs for hours and hours. They were checking everyone thoroughly, which I appreciate, but it was a long night! I think I landed around 7pm and didn’t get home until around 2am and the drive home was maximum 40 minutes. Glad you’re getting lots of doggy love!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Awe my parents are just the best it was so wonderful to see them again. Wow that is a rough time in customs for sure! And really, doggy love is the best!

  • http://www.hockeywifehockeylife.com/ Samantha Angell

Absolutely teared up at this post- family is the best! My worst trip was when my flights home for my own wedding were delayed and I missed connection in Amsterdam and had to spend the night there…not going to ever relive that story, but let me tell you it was hell! Enjoy your time at home!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Family really is just the best! I can only imagine how stressful your trip was, ahh especially for your own wedding! Glad those bad travel experiences are in the past for both of us!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

So cute, although I must ask if you all are planning on staying in the US forever. You have so many bags!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha those bags were mostly empty. When you live on an extremely expensive island a trip abroad means shopping as much as possible and stocking up!

  • http://snowintromso.com/ Van @ Snow in Tromso

The trip sounds so awful!! Glad you made it safe and sound in the end! Have a wonderful Christmas with your family!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Jordan! It was the best being back home with my family!

  • http://alexfahey.blogspot.com/ Alex Fahey

I’m glad you made it home! When I was flying home from Hawaii there was a landslide and it took us 6 hours to get the airport. Flights were delayed due to the storm and I missed my connecting flight in Chicago where the ticket counter lady was so helpful by saying today wasn’t a good day to miss a flight…. um thanks lady! Anyway- have a great time at home!.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ugh those travel experiences are the worst! It makes you appreciate when the travel runs smooth that is for sure!

I’m so sorry your trip started off so rough!! I would have been an emotional wreck! I’m glad you made it safely and can I just say you look AMAZING after a 17 hour flight. Your hair is flawless….what is your secret?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I was definitely an emotional wreck that is for sure! I had to make H deal with everything because I would just start crying if they told us we had to wait for the road to open up still. And awe thanks! I am surprised my hair stayed through the snow storm and travel. I have a wand that seriously is amazing it is my hairs best friend!

  • Beth

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

When we woke up to the snow storm I just knew it was not going to be a fun day of travel. I am just happy we were able to make it safely and it was so wonderful seeing my family again!
