Just Give Me The Bottle

Hunter Valley

One of my favorite things to do when I am traveling is to go on a wine tasting tour. In my opinion its a great way to see some beautiful areas of the country, and of course drinking wine is a major bonus.

Lucky for me H is always on board with this idea and we have visited several winery’s together in 4 different countries. I have loved all of the places that we have visited but a few areas have a special place in my heart, and some delicious wine as well.

Hunter Valley, Australia
I mentioned Hunter Valley on my must do list in Australia and for good reason. Each small winery we visited was so beautiful and where else can you sample tasty wines while watching kangaroos hop around in the vineyards?

Hunter Valley Kangaroo
This was actually my first time going on a wine tasting tour and I clearly found learning about the process of wine making fascinating.

But really I actually quite enjoy learning about how each winery makes their wine and enjoy a behind the scenes look. I especially like it when they let us sample some wine straight from the barrel, maybe thats why I am such an eager learner.

Since this was H and my’s first wine tasting experience together it will always be one of my favorites. And wine tasting in Australia, well its a pretty good place to be.

Sweet Cheeks, Oregon
Sweet Cheeks is my version of my favorite local bar. It is very near where I grew up and is the place my girlfriends and I go to catch up over our favorite wines while enjoying the amazing views out on the patio.

Sweey Cheeks Winery
It of course was the place I took H to meet my family for the first time, I figured there was no better place than my favorite winery for some family fun.

Sweet Cheeks
I miss Sweet Cheeks so much I can’t wait to be back in Oregon so I can enjoy Friday nights with live music next to the fire or sunny Sunday’s out on the patio gossiping with my girlfriends over mimosas. If your ever in the Eugene area be sure to stop by Sweet Cheeks for some delicious local wine and beautiful views of the Oregon countryside.

Florence, Italy
H and I spent a day traveling around the Florence countryside wine tasting, it was everything I ever hoped for and definitely a dream come true!

Florence, Italy
When we arrived at our first winery and were greeted with these barrels I knew I was going to love this place. It was such an adorable family operated winery and it was by far my favorite stop of the trip.

I have to mention the neon unicorn in the wine cellar, talk about a random decoration!

Florence, Italy
This winery visit was a completely idyllic trip and I would love to be back there again toasting to the beautiful countryside.

Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley
This past summer H and I went on a road trip to Napa Valley, best idea ever! Growing up 8 hours away from Napa Valley I have always wanted to visit and I definitely wasn’t disappointed in my trip! We visited several winery’s, because thats what you do when in Napa, but one of my favorites was the beautiful Castello di Amorosa.

Napa Valley
Opened in 2007 the Castello di Amorosa makes you feel like you have stepped back in time and are sampling wines in the medieval age. The views from the towers are breathtaking and the inside of the castle is just as magnificent.

The wine of course was delicious to, I wanted to take it all home with me.

I think H and I need to sell everything and travel the World sampling different wines. Pretty sure it would be the perfect job for me!

Question of the Day?
Have you ever gone wine tasting? Where is your favorite place?

I’ve never been on a wine tour before, but it does seem like a great idea to discover a country and the local drinking culture! ;) I drove through Napa Valley once and it was beautiful, but it was before I had reached the legal drinking age in the US, so I would love to go again! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That was the same for me, I had driven through Napa Valley a few times before I was 21 so I was glad to finally be legal and back there!

I have only been to one winery in my entire life…so embarrassing. I twas Areni in Armenia. I don’t know why I went, I just did. I’m actually a huge fan of craft beers and visit breweries around the world though…so I guess that’s my thing ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Craft beers and microbreweries are huge in Oregon! I wish it were more my thing but if your even on the west coast I will have to give you a few to try out!

Haha yes that tends to happen to me as well, I like it best when we get lots of snacks with the wine tasting so I can last a bit longer and try more wines!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes definitely! Wine tasting is such a blast and I love visiting different winery’s, you will have to go to Hunter Valley when your back home then post a bunch of pictures for me to be envious of!

We went to that winery in Florence! As part of a last minute tour we decided to book. We totally got a bottle for the road. Whenever I find out we are near wineries I have to go. Since I’m from wine country in NY we love a bit of wine touring :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

What a small world! That was the same for us, we booked a last minute tour and I am so glad we did. I just love wine tasting, wish we had some winery’s here in Iceland for me to go tasting!

Great suggestions! Hunter Valley is amazing, but Stellenboch & Franschhoek (South Africa) were my favorite, just look at the scenery! Biking & wine tasting, perfect pairing. :o)

I think yes! Any kind of drinking tour counts in my book and that one sounds awesome!

  • http://www.notentirelyperfect.com/ Stephanie

You’ve been everywhere! That neon unicorn is the best. I’ve never been to a vineyard, only like tiny wineries around Chicago so those don’t really count. I want to go to a huge one!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I love going to big and small winery’s its so fun! Isn’t that neon unicorn amazing ha.

  • Elizabeth Georgian

I have not been on a winery tour, but I did visit a tequila distillery in the town of Tequila, Mexico. It was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That sounds really fun! I enjoy learning about the wine making process and of course ending the class with wine ;)

  • Jessica

I am thirsty now! You sure do look extra happy when vineyard hopping ;)

      • http://www.pilgrimmemoirs.com/ Jamie pilgrim

I’m from Wisconsin and he’s German, so breweries are about as romantic as it gets for us, haha :)

I love that you love the Hunter Valley! I’ve actually never been myself but its on my “to do list” when I return home to Oz! I am heading to California in April and would love to go to the Napa Valley. Do you know how long it takes to get there from LA? Obviously it’d be better to say a night or two nearby so we can enjoy those delish wines! My boyfriend and I love wineries and breweries, and I agree - it makes for a great date :)

Yes Hunter Valley was amazing and so beautiful! California always amazes me with how long it takes to drive to places, especially with the traffic. Its about 6 hours away but could take up to 8 with traffic. I hope you get to visit though, you and your boyfriend would love it there so many wineries to check out!

      • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly Herring

Thanks Kiki! So defs not a day trip but we will make sure to visit! Sounds amazing x

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

  • http://www.longdistancebaking.com/ Stephanie @ longdistancebaking

Kelly and I will have to see if Sweet Cheeks is close enough to visit when we do our Oregon trip this spring! We’ll definitely be doing some wine drinking :) If you go back to Napa you should go to Mumm…it’s only champagne and sparkling wines! Super fun. And a nice change from the rest. Wineries are all gorgeous!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes wine tasting in Oregon is a must! Even if you stay in the Portland area over in McMinnville there are a ton of adorable wineries!

  • http://www.bonnieroseblog.co.uk/ Bonnie Rose

That looks so awesome…especially because of the kangaroos! My sister is a level II sommelier and I would love to go somewhere like this with her because I know not much at all about wine. Looks like you had an amazing time learning and tasting it too!

    • http://www.bonnieroseblog.co.uk/ Bonnie Rose

Like its got me thinking I want to do a world wine tour like this. How awesome!

      • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence
