Lessons Learned in Paris

Travel Wednesday
I mentioned last week that after our fun hike to Glymur I left Iceland and headed back to Oregon. At the time H and I had no idea when we would see each other again, oh the joys of long distance relationships.

After just a few weeks back at home though H and I were already planning our next adventure together, a month long trip through 4 different European countries.

At the end of the summer I packed my backpack and headed back to Iceland to meet H. And after two years of goodbyes at airports it was so exciting to finally be taking off on a plane together!

We had a really early flight from Iceland over to Paris so by the time we arrived we were tired and ready to find our hostel. We were staying at the same hostel that I had stayed in when I visited Paris in the spring so I told H not to worry I knew how to get there.

backpackingparis
After almost two hours of walking in circles ( I only spent one day in Paris so my sense of direction was a bit off) with our heavy backpacks I admitted I was lost. H took over the navigation and decided that my navigation skills were not to be trusted for the rest of the trip. Fine by me.

We were staying near Montmartre so after we (H) finally found our hostel we headed up to the church to snap our first photo together as proof to our families that we had arrived safely. This was a requirement by my Dad for each new city we arrived in so we have lots of these photos;)

Montmartre
From there we spent the rest of the afternoon walking all over Paris, literally! In all those hours of walking we learned some valuable lessons.

Lesson one, don’t attempt to walk the entire city of Paris in sandals in one evening, you will get blisters and achy legs.

Lesson two, don’t trust the pharmacist at the drug store near Moulin Rouge. The strength level of their “tums” is beyond anything you have taken.

Lesson three, when you see a public restroom use it. When the “tums” kick in you will be regretting not using the bathroom the entire hour you search for another one. Enough said about that.

Aside from those valuable lessons we had a great time exploring all over the city that night and I knew it was going to be a great trip together.

The next day I was woken up way to early by H who was ready to head out and explore. We were at the very beginning of a 5 week trip together so I was all about pacing ourselves but not H. When I saw this view from our room though I was reminded that I was in the beautiful city of Paris and quickly got ready to head out.

Paris
I gladly handed the map over to H first thing in the morning as well.

Paris
We spent our morning taking in all the sights and ended our day getting lost in the Louvre.

Paris ParisParisParis
LourveParis
For any of you that have had the chance to visit the Louvre you know that it takes hours to walk through. H and I aren’t the biggest art fans but we had to stop and see the famous Mona Lisa.

Louvre
People were going crazy over the painting, just check this photo out of everyone trying to get a glimpse of the famous painting.

Louvre
We made sure to have a little fun as well :)

LouvreLouvre

Visiting the Louvre was actually one of my favorite things we did in Paris. The art you see is just amazing! I could easily spend an entire day wandering around the halls in the Lourve, so if you get the chance don’t miss it!

Louvre
On our last day in Paris we woke up to some rainy weather but didn’t let it stop us from getting out and exploring the neighborhood near our hostel.

Paris
ParisParis
Our rainy walk someone found us at the Eiffel Tower where H was determined to go to the top of.

Paris
Remember the whole I am terrified of heights?? Well H thought going to the top of the Eiffel Tower would help me get more comfortable with heights. It didn’t, at all, but it was so worth it for the amazing views!

ParisParis
Oh and of course we opted to climb the stair to beat the lines. Talk about a work out.Paris
Has anyone taken the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower? After walking the stairs you take an elevator the rest of the way and it has to be the most terrifying elevator ride of my life! I still managed a smile at the top but I was already dreading the ride down.

Paris
After all that rainy day fun it was time for us to pack up and head off to our next destination, Zürich, Switzerland!

Paris
Note the clock in the background, this was us at the train station at 5:40am! We arrived at 4:30am thinking it would take us longer to get to the train station and instead we had a two hour wait out in the cold before our train would arrive. Yet another lesson of many learned on our trip!

Next week will be all about Swiss chocolate and pretzels, the adorable city of Zürich, and some sightings of the beautiful Swiss alps.

Question of the Day?
Have you been to the top of the Eiffel Tower? Any lessons you have learned from your travels?

I love y’alls Paris trip! Sam and I stayed in a hostel in Montmartre as well. Maybe it was the same one ;) I love your photo of people taking photos of the Mona Lisa x

Haha people were going crazy trying to get close enough to get a picture! Maybe it was the same one! Ours hostel was called Le Montclair Montmartre Hostel. I love the area of Montmartre!

Great pictures! I went to Paris a few years ago but the line was so long we decided to pass on going to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

The only reason I agreed to take the stairs was because there was no line for that. The lines were crazy line on the other side!

Despite 3 trips to Paris, I’ve never made it to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Oops, those views are incredible! And seriously there is no pair of walking shoes good enough for Paris, blisters are inevitable. Well, maybe tennis shoes would be good enough but…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, there is no good shoes for the amount of walking you do when traveling! The views were incredible, made all those stairs worth it!

I have been to the top of the Eiffel Tower twice now. Once at night and once during the day. Both times were freezing though so I would love to go in summer :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ohhh I bet it was so beautiful at night!

I love your little red Toms. I’ve been thinking about getting a pair (any colour) for months, but they seem so flimsy whenever I hold them in the shop. Are they comfortable for city walking?

I went to Paris when I was about 12/13 so I’m well overdue another trip. You’ve totally bumped it further up the list.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Toms were the only shoes that I wore on our trip and we spent two weeks walking non stop everyday. Anything else I wore would make my feet hurt so I highly recommend them!

      • http://tidethatleft.blogspot.co.uk/ Amy @ the tide that left

Tell Toms to send you a commission because I am sold! I’ll pick some up next time I’m in the UK. Thank you!

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Awesome I hope you love them as much as I do!

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

I loved going to the top of the Eiffel tower! I’m luckily not afraid of heights though. We took the stairs back down which was fine, but you were brave for taking them on the way up! I absolutely love Paris.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

The views from the top were so beautiful, it made walking all those stairs worth it!

  • http://flyingonarainbow.blogspot.co.uk/ Jenni @ Flying on a Rainbow

We took the stairs at the Eiffel Tower too… I hated it. I am not good with heights if I can look straight down and see the ground! The first time I went to Paris was a girls’ trip and that time taught me that many people underestimate distances when looking at maps. Gare du Nord to the Seine is a loooooong walk - nobody listened to me when I told them that, but who was proved right?!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, the maps didn’t not justify the distance at all! We walked way more than what we thought we would be. It was a long walk to go up to the top but in the end I was glad we did it. A girls trip to Paris sounds amazing!

      • http://flyingonarainbow.blogspot.co.uk/ Jenni @ Flying on a Rainbow

I wish I could say it was, but I didn’t enjoy it all that much. I’m glad I went back with my husband, that time I fell in love with the city!

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

The first time I went to Paris was the same for me. The second time was when I saw the beauty of the city!

  • http://confuzzledom.wordpress.com/ bevchen

I went to the Louvre with some of my family. My (then) six year old cousin’s only comment “Daddy, why is that painting even famous?!”

We didn’t go up the Eiffel Tower. We decided to go up the Montmartre Tower instead because you can see the Eiffel Tower from up there.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha your cousin asked a wise question. I was like, oh thats its!

Next time I am there I will have to go up to the Montmartre Tower!

  • http://www.notentirelyperfect.com/ Stephanie

Your photos from the top make me scared enough. I couldn’t do it! Too high!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh it was so high! I definitely was scared when I was up there.

  • Lara

I traveled to Paris with my high school marching band in 1994 for the 50th anniversary of D-Day - we went to top of the Eiffel Tower and took the elevator. I don’t have a fear of heights and thought it was wonderful! I really hope I get to return to Paris some day.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That sounds like so much fun! I hope you get to make it back to Paris some day as well:)

  • notbeforemytea

Yay finally a post that doesn’t make me feel like I’m doing life all wrong! I’ve actually been to Paris twice – once for an exchange in high school and once when I went backpacking with my friends. The first time I saw all the touristy stuff which was nice, but really… well… touristy. (The best memory I have of that time is sneaking alcohol into our hotel room which gave us the courage to sneak OUT of the hotel and take pictures in front of the arc de triomphe at midnight. Badasses for sure.) The second time was much more fun but it was also a bit more stressful because it was up to me to figure out everything because I had been there before and I was the only one who can “speak” French. Which it turns out I can’t do very well.

And this concludes this short novel on my European experiences lol.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yay I am so glad we can be friends again! Haha such a rebel you were! And what you speak French, girl you fancy!

  • Rachel Murphree

I looooovvvee Paris. I think it may even be just as pretty in the rain! However, when I went it was July and hot, and so the Louvre was very uncomfortable. No air conditioning and thousands of people pushing around in there. My friend and I saw the Mona Lisa, the Cupid and Psyche statue, and then got the hell out of there for fresh air!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh ya it doesn’t sound to comfortable to experience that when its so warm outside. That sounds like our experience in Rome, was so hot and packed with tourist!

  • Tanya Jean

Oh gosh, going to Paris is a dream of mine! It looks like you guys had so much fun! Loving these pictures :)

Gorgeous photos! Never been to Paris, but when I move to Germany in the next year I know at least a weekend trip will be mandatory!

And I have about about a million mistakes every trip I go on, no matter how much I plan! That ends up being the fun of it and usually makes for the best stories!

Have fun in Zurich! Can’t wait for the photos :)

Thank you. Yes you will have to go when you move to Germany!

Those mistakes I have decided are what make the stories so fun;)

Bahahaha @ the Tums!!! What an amazing experience to see these things in person!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha those damn tums got me good!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

These photos and stories remind me so much of my time in Paris. Mind you, it was for a 7 week school exchange when I was 14 but I still remember everything so vividly! I think Paris will be etched in my memory forever! I adored the Louvre too - I could have explored it all day. Of course I ran to see the Mona Lisa and we had a very similar crowd to what it looks like you did! It was a heap smaller than I thought it was going to be though. Did you find that too?

    • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

And yes I’ve been to the Eiffel Tower too! We also climbed up - amazing cardio haha!

      • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh wow Paris at 14 how wonderful. I thought the Mona Lisa was so much smaller than I thought it would be as well. Seriously, that climb to the top of the tower was a major cardio session!

Oh how I love Paris. For the Eiffel Tower, I’ve done the stairs/elevator and the elevator only. Taking the stairs the first time was enough as interesting to see all the metal work up close but quite the workout. I would make reservations if you want to do the elevator from top to bottom or you’ll likely wait in a long line (unless you are eating in the restaurant and then you are in a priority line). You can’t actually take the stairs at night so you have to take the elevator.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree it was really interesting to take the stairs and see all the metal work on the way up, especially since we were taking lots of breaks as we went:) Yes that line was crazy for the elevator, thanks for the tip!

  • Sharon Robinson

wow such great pics and good tips too
