Life Lately..

life_lately
..I spent my Sunday afternoon reading out in my yard with my feet in the grass and enjoying the sunshine. It was wonderful. We are really lucky to have a place with a big yard living in downtown Reykjavik. I foresee many summer days being spent out there.

..Tomorrow I am getting my hair done for the first time since moving to Iceland. This is over 6 months of no hair cuts and my summer blonde hair looks like a dead mop on my head. I am terrified and excited to get my hair done, fingers crossed all goes well.

..Last week I was hit with some serious homesick blues. I have decided that homesickness has a mind of its own and hits when you least expect it.

..Over the weekend I went to one of the girls from my bookclubs house for a girls night. It was just what I needed to help me shake my homesick funk and I had a great time meeting new girls.

..This week brings my first paycheck and that paycheck is going straight towards our tickets for Croatia. Let the countdown to beautiful beaches begin!

..My 25th birthday is only a month away!I have mixed feelings about my upcoming birthday, saying goodbye to my early twenties is not something I am ready for. At least I have my birthday off work, another random Icelandic holiday!

..Speaking of Icelandic holidays, last week in addition to Easter we had Thursday off because it was the “first day of summer” which is a public holiday here in Iceland. We have this coming Thursday off as well for labor day, love these random Icelandic holidays!

..This weekend Reykjavik was treated to beautiful 60℉ (15℃) spring weather. You would have thought we lived on a tropical island. People were out in shorts, the pools were packed and people were lounging out on the benches in their swimsuits. I on the other hand was in the hot pools watching these people sunbathing thinking they have to be cold, right?

..Many of my friends here in Iceland are from England and I am loving listening to the British accent. They sound so proper and polite! It is amazing how many differences we have in our vocabulary as well.

..This weekend my mom and I were finally able to have a long skype talk and it made me so happy to just spill my guts to my mom and feel the love and comfort of home. I miss my mom so much but she always knows how to cheer me up. Moms are just the best!

..Pretzels in Iceland taste no where as good as pretzels back home. Random point I know but I have now tried all the different possible brands of pretzels and can officially say none of them are making the cut. I miss the Costco 5 pound pretzel bags!

..My small talk Icelandic skills have been put to use this week. I successfully communicated with the grocery store cashier, taxi driver and phone company. Maybe they were being polite and kept talking in Icelandic to me but it makes me feel like I fooled them and they think I can actually speak Icelandic which is a big win in my book:)

..As I am writing this with the windows wide open enjoying the sunshine at 9pm I can already feel my internal clock getting completely confused! I may have some issues when the sun never sets this summer!

..On my run this weekend I discovered this small hot pool perfect for soaking your feet. It is right next to the sea with a beautiful view of Mt.Esjan. I think H and I need to take in some sunsets out here this summer..

Question of the Day?
Anyone else every have their hair done while living abroad? Tell me something happening in your life lately?

Come to Germany… it’s the home of pretzels ;-)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I need to visit Germany for sure! I love pretzels!

      • http://www.gutenblogyall.com/ Margo

Agreed! Pretzels are everywhere - a bit salty but certainly yummy!

        hooray for Croatia! ;)

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am a fan of salt so they sound right up my alley!

  • http://bristolinmypocket.blogspot.co.uk/ Sara Rose

I haven’t had my hair done either! I got it done when I went back to Texas for Christmas, but I haven’t done it in England yet! I’m worried it’ll be 10x more expensive here than back home.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know I have usually been able to just get my hair done when I am back home but since it won’t be until Christmas I figured 6 months is the limit my hair looks scary!

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

I was terrified the first time I had my hair done in England too, and then even more horrified at the price. I then coincided trips home with hair appointments haha. Since then I’ve thankfully found a really good place with good prices, and ask for the same girl each time. It’s funny how attached you get to your own hairdresser though!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

My hairdresser is one of my closest friends so I never have been worried before. H’s sister recommended this girl and so I am hoping it works out!

  • http://sophieinclogs.com Sophie

Congrats on the Icelandic small-talk!! So exciting :D
After a few attempts at finding a good hairdresser here I’m afraid to say I’ve given up. The prices are outrageous and the results are just never as good … I feel like Dutch girls just have naturally beautiful hair so nobody knows how to work with more difficult manes!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! It is the little accomplishments that help keep me motivated to study the language. I have heard that hairdressers here are suppose to all be really good so I am hoping that is the case. I called around about prices so I am getting a better deal, I was shocked at what some of the salons where charging!

Sorry to hear the home sick blues hit you! You are right in saying they can strike at any time. It must have been nice to have a big chat with your mum. Glad the weather is warming up there. How many public holidays do you get a year in Iceland? I might have to move countries ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

They really do just strike whenever! We have so many public holidays as well as 5 weeks paid summer leave so its win in my book :)

  • http://djseaward.tumblr.com/ Cynthia

Good for you! I rejoice (either internally or often externally) over any little successful interaction in a foreign language so I’m totally with ya there. It’s so motivating :) And I LOVE that little hot pool! Seems like there are so many little secrets to be discovered there.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

All successful foreign language interaction deserves a party!

Oh the hair issues. Thankfully, none so far for me… but for my husband? You wouldn’t think it would be so bad for a guy, but it has been. First time, he paid $50 and got the most hipster European style — with bangs! He was horrified and I ended up having to cut them off for him. The next time, I did some research, found him a place on Yelp that said it was a “traditional American barber shop.” Perfect, right?! The only review on the site said they were great, but complained they didn’t speak quite enough Swedish. Fine by us! So I called and made an appointment. Towards the end of the call, I didn’t quite catch what the guy said, but I heard, “he’s … American?” So I answered yes and hung up. A few days later, my husband went to the address of the place at the time for his appointment and walked into a Swedish replica of a traditional African American barber shop, complete with explicit rap music and a poster of Obama on the wall. As he, a white guy in casual-business dress walked in, everyone in the place started to laugh. Kudos to him though, he didn’t just turn around and leave, he sat down for his haircut! Apparently though, the guy had never cut Caucasian hair though, because at one point, he finally asked, “Should I use scissors on it?” and the whole thing took quadruple the normal amount of time. Thankfully though, it didn’t look bad at all and was much cheaper than the previous hipster place. For his next cut, he bought an electric clipper, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos, and did it myself. Much cheaper and came out perfectly fine!

Sorry for that epic novel, but the story is too good not to share, and I can’t remember if I’ve ever blogged about it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha that is such a good story! I hope my experience isn’t like that but at least they always make for funny stories. Oh the adventures abroad!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

The best pretzel I ever had was in Switzerland….Yum! I still think of it fondly. The longest I’ve ever gone without a haircut was 8 months and I was so embarrassed when I finally did go and get one that they were going to judge me for that :) x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Same here, I still dream of the pretzel I had in Zurich. I probably will apologize a ton about the state of my hair, I just can’t wait to get these locks some life back in them!

      • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Mine was in Zurich as well! Maybe it was at the same place! x

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

How are you thinking about getting your hair done?! I go forever between cuts… it’s pathetic b/c Pete’s mom is a hairdresser and does ours for free - I’m just THAT lazy! hahaha
I love me a British accent!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I just need to trim off the dead ends and bring some life to my hair. I usually put some highlights during winter so my blonde doesn’t look so ashy so that is the part I am concerned about. I don’t want to come out with bleach blonde hair or orange hair so fingers crossed it goes well!

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

We also were out in the sun this weekend with similar temperatures and do not worry get another winter in and you to will be in your bathing suit when it hits 60 I am now!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is what I fear! I miss warm weather!

  • http://ifihad100dollars.wordpress.com Julieanne Malley

I had my hair done in Ireland - it actually turned out great until I got back to the US and the difference in the chemical composition of the water turned my hair bleach blonde haha! But it did look great while I was there!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh no! I guess it is a good thing I won’t be returning to the states for awhile! Glad it turned out good though while you were there.

  • http://www.lifeinprogress.ca/ Kathy@Vodka and Soda

i swear, these things like hot pool untouched (or ruined) by man are straight out of a dream.. you are SO lucky to be living in iceland with such gorgeous nature all around you.

They are so beautiful I love finding the hot pools.

  • BlushandBarbells

I’ve had my hair cut while living and travelling abroad and I was told each time that I was over-tipping! A lifetime habit that is hard to break, I guess. I always color my own hair so I brought supplies with me or bought them at my location.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think not tipping is a hard habit for me to break as well working in customer service for so long. Here in Iceland there is no tipping so I am glad I don’t have to worry about it.

  • http://weiderjl.blogspot.com/ Jenn

I turned 25 yesterday and had a hard time with it for some reason

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Happy birthday to you! Both my parents said they had the hardest time with their 25th birthday, I am hoping it won’t be as bad as I am making it in my head.

  • Rachel Murphree

A few things: I really like your shoes. Feet on grass is such a great feeling! Coratia?! I am so jealous! I am sorry about the homesickness. :(

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Feet on the grass really is such a great feeling. Thanks Rachel!

  • ablondearoundtheworld

Hey girl! Just to let you know you have a nomination on my blog :)
    following you always :) xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Thank you!

  • http://speaking-denglish.com/ Alex, Denglish Speaker

You need to come to Germany for some pretzels ;)

And 25 ain’t so bad (granted, it’s only been a week) - still far from 30 (then cue the freak out).

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It sounds like Germany is the place to be for pretzels! I don’t know why I am freaking out more about the 25th birthday than the 30th. I hope it isn’t too bad.

  • Steph Gregerson

I don’t live abroad, but we moved to NYC in November and I’m headed back home to the Midwest in a month and I made a hair appt. I’m a little too freaked out to try someone new :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is crazy how attached you get to your hairdresser, I am so nervous to try someone new! Hope yours turns out well:)

  • http://www.migrationexpert.co.uk/ sofiadunc

You know what, I’m listening to Pachuca Sunrise when I got to your blog and I thought this post of your kinda fits the song.. it’s also about missing someone and missing home, and I just love the beat, it’s awesome, and it’s by Minus the Bear.
And that pool which kinda look like a small volcanic crater to me looks so awesome. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I will have to check that song out!
