Why I Like Living Abroad

Heading back home for the first time in 14 months means my schedule is packed full of reunions with friends and family. A common question I know many of my friends and family will be asking me is, “what do you like about living abroad”? A completely reasonable question to someone who decided to uproot her life and move to a foreign country away from her friends and family.

So why do I like living abroad? What makes it worth it to be away from everyone and start a new life 4,000 miles away? Of course the obviously answer is the Viking, but I am a girl that needs more in her life than a man to keep her happy and sane in a foreign land.

So what is keeping me abroad?

Everyday is an Adventure

Sure I do the same Monday-Friday routine like everyone else living the daily work grind, but let me tell you, my Monday-Friday in Iceland is nothing like what it was in the states. Simple daily tasks like having a meeting with my co-workers or going to the grocery store quickly becomes an adventure.

I never know what my day will hold, who I will meet, what countries I will learn about and what languages I will be surrounded by. And you know what, it is a blast! I don’t want my life to feel like it is just passing me by in one big blur. Nothing like living outside your comfort zone on a daily basis to make you really present in each moment!

thingvellir, Iceland

You never know who you will meet

Since moving to Iceland I have made friends from countries from around the world. Just the other night I was out with a group of friends and all 8 of us were from a different country, how cool is that! I am lucky to work in an international environment so even in my work life I am constantly meeting new people from all over the world. Of course I miss my close friends and family but I must say getting to meet so many people from different countries and learning about their cultures is a pretty awesome thing.

Friends Abroad

Your Grow In So Many Ways

Now that I am returning home after living abroad for 14 months I can feel how much I have changed just in my conversations with my family and friends. All of those uncomfortable situations I have found myself in this past year have helped shape me into the person I am today. As I am meeting everyone and telling them about what I have been doing in Iceland I am full of new experiences to share and accomplishments that I am ridiculously proud. I have grown in ways that never seemed possible when I was living inside my comfort zone in Oregon and I know I have this past year to thank for that.

Blue Lagoon

Your Itinerary is full of the unknown

Moving abroad I clearly have a passion for travel and seeing the world. I love the fact that a trip to Europe can quickly be added to my itinerary with just a few weeks notice. Or the fact that I can’t tell you 100 percent where I will be living in 6 months. As someone who use to plan every little detail of her life this unknown feeling took some getting use to but now I thrive off not knowing what each month has in store.

Iceland

You view nothing as impossible

After having my share of ups and downs this past year I am coming back home feelings like I have really made a great life for myself in Iceland. I feel like if I can survive and thrive in life while living in a foreign country I can succeed in anything I put my mind to. The confidence in myself that I have gained this past year in Iceland is something I don’t know if I would have found living at home in my comfort zone. Taking risks is still an uncomfortable thing for me but I have found that those risks that do pay off, those are what make life so wonderful!

Basically all these points have the same thing in common, I love the adventure life abroad brings and I am so glad I chose to make the move abroad and live my life with no regrets. Now I am off to share these things with my friends and family and convince them all the move to Iceland with me. Wish me luck!

Question of the Day?

To my fellow expats, why do you like living abroad?

It is so nice having cheap travel options around you! I wish I lived on mainland Europe so that travel would be even cheaper from Iceland.

oh, the endless questions! it takes a while to get your answers down but this is a great list… I would add one big perk in my case is not having to work a 9-5 job anymore :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That is one awesome perk! Although I do work a 9-5 job the hours are much more relaxed and the vacation time is awesome!

It sure is addictive, isn’t it? Sometimes it’s hard to imagine going back home and living with a bit less adventure injected to our everyday experiences.

It really is! When I have came back home from living abroad before it was like my mind couldn’t stop planning my next adventure!

Yes, I say go for it and travel as much as possible! I didn’t start traveling until a few years ago and now that I have started I can’t stop!

  • http://themochileradiaries.com Leah Kate

It’s so true that everyday is an adventure. I love that little tasks that would seem so mundane at home can be challenging and interesting abroad. Grocery shopping here in Colombia is a riot…the store I go to is so massive they actually have PERSONAL SHOPPERS to help you wade through the insane selection of products. I don’t typically need help choosing crackers, but they offer it anyway and I find it hilarious.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Grocery shopping really is such an adventure! How crazy, personal shoppers, that must be one massive store!

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

What a great adventure! I totally agree about how much confidence you gain while living outside your comfort zone. I lived abroad for one year and grew so much as a person that year. I remember coming home an inspired and more confident version of my old self. That’s actually one of the reasons we moved across the country last year. It might not be abroad, but it still got me outside my comfort zone that I really feel was stifling me. I think it’s important to keep taking risks and trying new adventures!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is so true living outside of your comfort zone shapes you in so many ways! Every time I return home I feel like such a changed person with a new outlook on life. Good for you guys for taking a risk and moving away again outside of your comfort zone, even in the same country it is still a big life change!

  • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

The second comment is absolutely true! You think you’ll be the only foreigner but actually lots of people uproot their lives and I’ve also discovered that a lot of people do it just because and don’t have massive reasons for it, sometimes for love, for work or simply because they could… I’ve learnt my own reason (for study) isn’t that strange at all :)

The first comment is my favourite, the reason we decided to move abroad rather than stay in the UK was for the adventure, whether it was good or bad it was an adventure and it proved to use we could actually do it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I felt the same way when I first moved to Iceland, like I was the only foreigner moving here! Of course I was totally wrong and there are many here which I love meeting and learning their stories of how they ended up here. An adventure is always good, no matter how they end up at least we won’t ever say our lives are boring!

  • http://anothercleanslate.com/ Kate @ Another Clean Slate

If my work offered the opportunity to move abroad, I would 100% jump at the chance. I wish I had done it in college!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I almost didn’t do it in college but thankfully had an academic adviser who really supported the idea and motivated me to go for it!

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

I like living abroad for all of these reasons as well :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Trying to remind myself of all these reasons as I have just said my goodbyes. Nice to have a good list of things to remind yourself of on those hard days abroad!

  • http://tidethatleft.blogspot.co.uk/ Amy @ the tide that left

The thing about every day being an adventure is definitely it for me. From learning how to use different forms of transport, practising new language I’ve picked up, meeting new people, negotiating the supermarket. It’s all new and exciting, even when it’s just ‘normal’ stuff. Have a great trip home :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! It makes the daily tasks a bit more fun with all the new things that are thrown your way!

  • http://mishfish13.com/ Mishfish13

I love this! Definitely the last one for me.. abroad, there just seemed like there were so many possibilities and nothing was out of my reach! And once I got home, I lost a little bit of that… my dreams got a little more realistic and while that works for where I am right now, I hate it a bit! Waiting for the day I can leave and restart with my old perspective!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I did the same thing. When I moved back home I stopped dreaming as big or taking risks. Now that I am back abroad I hope I never stop, even when I am living back in my comfort zone.

  • Caitlin Travis

I need to make a list like this and read it to remind myself when it feels impossible. The good definitely outweighs the bad, no matter who nearsighted I can be sometimes. Living somewhere so completely outside your comfort zone is such a rewarding and exciting experience. And there’s no time like the present!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! I am so glad I made this list to look back on now that I am back in Iceland and have said goodbye to home. Living outside of your comfort zone really is a rewarding experience and you grow so much from it!

  • http://pleasurablepursuits.blogspot.com/ Tracy O’Neill

New experiences around every corner. I never know what each day will hold. And you’re very right, even the simplest things turn into an adventure

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Never knowing what each day will bring keeps the adventure alive doesn’t it?! Daily tasks that I always viewed as simple now are a adventure!

  • http://bristolinmypocket.blogspot.co.uk/ Sara Rose

I absolutely love this post. I think the most common question expats get is “why do you like living abroad”, and you nailed it perfectly!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Sara! I think it is the most common question I get for sure! From now on I am just going to refer everyone to this post:)

  • MissLilly

It is quite an experience indeed, you start opening your eyes and you understand the value of diversity. We learn how to think in a different language (when not more), we adopt traditions that were not ours originally but make us feel more home. I don’t regret it at all either :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So true, life abroad has made me a lifelong student and I love learning something new everyday!

  • http://welaughanyway.com/ Yalanda_Meshell

Everyday is an adventure. No truer words have been spoken my dear! Living in a foreign place is not for the faint of heart, but if you have the right attitude (and in some cases the right partner), you can put a positive spin on even the less than savory aspects of it all!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Agreed! The right attitude will do wonders for your life abroad! Negative Nancey’s I steer clear of those!

  • Krystal R.

I love to travel and this post captures the spirit of not only living abroad but travel in general. Great post!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Krystal! Traveling is just wonderful!

  • http://readtravelbecome.com Mere Salazar

I agree with all of these reasons! Living abroad, life seems like more of an adventure… with the language, culture, food, transportation and travel, it’s more exciting. I feel like I put less emphasis on money and things (#teachersalary), and more on experiences and people. Of course there are negatives and it’s sometimes dangerous as a Gringa in Peru, but all the positives outweigh the negatives, and overall life abroad is great!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So so so agree with this! I just returned back from visiting the states for Christmas and all the things I thought I would be buying just didn’t interest me anymore. I would much rather spend my money on travel and experiences than things.

  • http://thepumpkinshead.wordpress.com/ Betty J. Ogburn

…I definitely agree with the whole “growing” thing: Getting an apartment, setting up a bank account navigating the bureaucratic/residential rigmarole-in my SECOND language (Spanish) has definitely been a confidence booster!!…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

And impressive as well good on you for doing that all in your second language! I am lucky and was able to use English to handle all of my things in Iceland although not being able to read most things was a challenge for sure.

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

Love the post and can’t stop agreeing with all the points! There is something so exciting and so new about living abroad - even if you have for months or even years!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Everyday is an exciting adventure that is for sure! Life abroad is such a great experience.

  • http://www.amyandthegreatworld.com/ AmyMacWorld

This is so great-and so true! It’s really hard to be away from everything familiar but it’s worth it, because every day IS an adventure :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

On the hard days I try and remind myself of all the amazing adventures I am having, sometimes it helps, sometimes not :) Life abroad is a great experience for sure!
