Lopapeysas, Bacon and Blueberries

When I was growing up we would often go around the dinner table at night and share how our day was. Usually the response my parents got from us girls was something along the lines of, “ya school was good”… So to get us talking more my parents would ask us our high and low from the day. It is such a great way to share your day and H and I often recap our days sharing our highs and lows.

With that in mind I thought it would be a great way to recap my weekend by sharing my highs and lows from weekend. So let’s get to it shall we!

High

First work party of the new school year

Lopapeysa Party
Icelanders know how to mix work and play! We often have a party at least once a month and they all have a theme. This event was a lopapeysa theme (the traditional Icelandic sweater) and I was so happy to have one of my own to keep me warm all night. And sparkly bunny eyes just make the outfit complete:)

Low

Saying goodbye to one of my co-workers

Lopapeysa Party
The one in the middle of this fuzzy picture had her last day sitting next to me on Friday and I am sad to see her go. She has been so supportive and helpful to me with my Icelandic and learning the ropes of the new job. Hopefully the one to fill her spot will be just as wonderful.

High and a Low

The Reykjavik Bacon festival

Reykjavik Bacon Festival
All week I have been looking forward to attending the Reykjavik Bacon festival because, I mean really a festival all about bacon, it has to be amazing. I was so disappointed though with all the booths, their dishes did not do bacon justice. This event gets a high as well though because it was a beautiful sunny day out and I love walking this street with views of the church in the background.

High

My favorite salad made an appearance

Summer Salad
This salad was the highlight of my Saturday night, it was a wild night. Fresh strawberries, avocado and spinach, a recipe for deliciousness! If only the strawberries weren’t ridiculously expensive, I would be having this salad all the time.

High

Exploring Heiðmörk

HeiðmörkHeiðmörk
Sunday was such a beautiful day so we decided to try are luck at picking blueberries. It is a bit early for blueberries but we were hoping we would get lucky so off we headed off to Heiðmörk, a nature conservation area about 20 minutes away from downtown Reykjavik.

Low

We found no blueberries!

Heiðmörk This little berries were about all that we found that were ripe enough to be picked. Looks like another trip to Heiðmörk will need to be happening in a few weeks.

High

Spending Sunday afternoon relaxing in the sunshine

Heiðmörk
Sitting outside, enjoying a quiet Sunday afternoon is just what I needed to refresh before the start of yet another busy week.

Have a great Monday everyone!

Question of the Day?
Tell me your weekend high and lows?

It sounds like overall you had a great weekend! My high of the weekend was that some of my friends came back from their summer holiday and my low was still not knowing if my job that is due to begin on Sept 8 is actually real or not.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Sending luck you way! I hope the job works out!

So many highs! High - meeting another blogger and going to my favourite eating/drinking places low - the weekend is over :( I’m so sad for you that the bacon fest was a disappointment! Honestly, I’d just expect to be handed strips of bacon all day, sorted.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh how fun! I know I was so bummed out about the bacon fest, I thought bacon couldn’t be messed up, they proved me wrong!

  • http://bluehairinbelgium.blogspot.be/ Kerri Heritage

I love this idea. I was having a Big Blog Think (I’m sure it’s an official activity!) over the weekend and was thinking about doing this to round off the week. Now I’ve seen the post in action, I think I might just do that.

My weekend highs: Having Monday off work, because I worked the bank holiday on Friday. Mondays suck anyway so better have a lay in. Also, trying to make clotted cream and a half day trip to Liege on Saturday.
Weekend lows: Clotted cream not working out. Binge watching too much TV, so now we don’t have any to watch… oh the irony.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes it was a fun way to recap my weekend! I love having Monday’s off, makes the weekend that much better. I am hooked on Top Chef at the moment and have been watching way to much of it so I feel ya on the watching too much tv!

Sounds like such a good weekend overall! I wish Holland had an official sweater so we could have official Dutch sweater parties … I guess the closest thing would be traditional garb or clogs :p
My high: seeing my Belgian friend in The Hague after too long, and with only a few hours’ notice! Love when things unexpectedly work out. Low: rain rain raaaaiiin.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am so glad we didn’t have all the rain that so many others had over the weekend. And I think clogs should like a pretty cool party outfit. Do you own a pair, or is that just something people assume about Holland that everyone has clogs?

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

Ah, too bad you didn’t find any blackberries! Although “did not do bacon justice” is one of my favourites lines I’ve ever read on a blog :) x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha I mean really how could they mess up bacon!

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

Sounds like a fun weekend, my high was getting to wear some new clothes out for drinks and my low as Fredrik feeling crappy all day Sunday!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yay for new clothes, especially when we live in these pricey countries! Hope Fredrik is feeling better!

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

All of it sounds like so much fun! The work party, the bacon festival (you’ve just convinced so many people of heading to Iceland now, I’m sure!), the salad looks delicious and the beautiful sunshine! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks Camila! Hope your weekend was great as well :)

  • http://anothercleanslate.com/ Kate @ Another Clean Slate

That salad looks so good! I might need to make it this week!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is my favorite, I could eat that salad everyday!

  • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

That’s so interesting that it’s not even blueberry season in Iceland yet! I wanted to go picking in early August but was told all of the blueberries were already gone. Quite a different climate, I guess :) Bummer the bacon festival didn’t hold up to your expectations. I would have high hopes too… there’s so much you can do with bacon!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know I was so surprised as well. As I was telling my mom I had to wait a few weekends for blueberries she was rushing out the door hoping to find some of the last of the blueberries!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy @ Days Like This

We used to do this exact thing (kind of) expect my dad used to call it ‘good things and bad things’ I still get people to do it with me if I am ever having a sit down dinner!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is such a great way to share your day with each other :)

  • http://www.adventuresofadreamcatcher.com Lisa K

Too bad you didn’t find any blueberries…at least you got some berries in your salad. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I had to splurge and buy some expensive berries but it was so worth it!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

Girl, I love your new look around these parts! And your new main picture… GORGEOUS!!! :D
I love strawberries and spinach as a salad… it’s especially good with blueberries, sliced almonds and poppyseed dressing! Never tried it with avocado though… I’ll have to do that next time!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yum I am drooling over this salad talk. And thanks girl, always feels nice to give the site a bit of a makeover :)

  • http://withlove-rachel.com Rachel Murphree

You had me at bacon festival. And wow, Icelandic summers look so beautiful! Strawberries, spinach, and avocado make such a great combination. Are avocados expensive in Iceland? I imagine they must be!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Avocados depending on where you buy them from aren’t to bad actually. But I was spoiled and grew up with fresh California avocados shipped to Oregon so they are so not the same!

      • http://dianadegzz.blogspot.de/ Diana - Life in German.

I was going to ask the same thing, strawberries are cheap here in season, and avocado usually runs at around 1€ I buy it when its at around ,69€

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

That picture of the three sad blueberries cracked me up. Sorry you weren’t so successful! My high this week was getting to wear sweaters and jeans - bring on the chilly weather!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha it made me laugh as well! It feels like fall is here in Iceland, I do love the crisp mornings.

  • http://www.adventuresofalondonkiwi.blogspot.com/ adventuresofalondonkiwi

Oh, I love this! My high would be cooler weather which I adore, but my low would be getting distracted from things I should have been getting done.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

If you enjoy cooler weather it sounds like Iceland is the place for you :)

  • http://www.foodboozeandbaggage.com/ Food Booze & Baggage

Bacon festival!!! That is so upsetting it did not live up to expectations.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right! I was so upset over that, how can you not make bacon good!
