A Girl and Her Viking Take On New York City

Massive buildings, busy street walkers, horns honking and street food smells all around. New York City was about as different as Iceland as you can get but I loved it!

The Big Apple has been on my list for as long as I can remember. I must admit, I don’t know if it was NYC itself that interested me, or if I just wanted to visit to see what all the hype was about. I mean who doesn’t have NYC on their travel list?

Whichever one it was after my short trip to NYC this past fall I now completely understand why this city is a must see destination for most!

The Viking and I only had two full days to explore the city. Which means we really needed to make the most out of our time if we wanted to see everything on our list!

Before our trip I had a lengthy skype chat with my parents, who happen to be big fans of NYC and full of awesome tips. As soon as our bags were dropped off we took off with our map marking all the spots we wanted to see and the tips from my parents (this map was like gold!) and hit the ground running.

Not really, I was actually trying to limit the amount of walking I did each day to save my legs for the marathon, the whole reason why I was even in NYC to begin with. In a city like New York though this was quite the challenge, and I pretty much failed at my goal, we ended up walking everywhere, but I can’t complain I got to see some gorgeous sights along the way.

From Harlem to Midtown, Central Park to Battery Park, walking the Highline and bar hopping with a childhood friend in Chelsea, the Viking and I managed to fit in everything we had planned and more. Just looking back through our pictures has me dreaming of another trip back, a much longer trip, there is still so much I want to see and do!

Until then enjoy this photo diary of our whirlwind NYC trip.

Next time I have to see Jimmy Fallon!

NYC on the mind

NYC is definitely on the mind! Now to convince the Viking that we need another trip back asap!

Question of the Day?

Do you have a place on your travel list you have always wanted to visit? Have you been to NYC before?

Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous!! I love spending weekends in the city (I live about an hour away) and now I’m missing how beautiful all of the trees looked in the fall!

Whoa… I’m super impressed with how much you packed into two days (especially walking everywhere!). These photos make me miss NYC in the fall. Sidenote: that Einstein “love” graffiti is right near my office and I usually eat lunch on the Highline in front of it when it’s warm enough out! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It was a busy couple of days that is for sure! I bet that is so amazing getting to eat lunch out on the Highline it was so pretty in the fall colors!

I just went to NYC for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it! We did all the touristy things, however. I think I’d like a trip like yours a bit better. I wanted to bar hop and explore with no itinerary, but my best friend? She had us scheduled out to the max! I’m going to London in April - the city I’ve always wanted to visit! - and save for a visit to the Harry Potter studio and a day trip to Bath and Stonehenge, I have no itinerary and I can’t wait!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is such an awesome city! We had to cut a lot of the touristy things out since we were short on time, but it really turned out great just wandering around and seeing what we could. London is going to be awesome, I have the Harry Potter studio high on my list have such a great time!

I really need a longer trip back just so I can try all the places I want to eat at!

wow, you did so much even if you were trying to limit your walking! i hope you get to go back for a longer trip. we went for a few days, 5 or 6 i think, and it was great. loved it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I really do need to go back for a longer trip, there is so much to see and do!

Ireland and NYC were both meant to be my next destinations but then I got pregnant with twin boys so I will have to wait a bit…

Wow, you guys really got around! I have to admit I’ve never really understood the hype after being in NYC a few times, but the last time I was there (actually by accident after I missed a connecting flight) I started to see the appeal. There’s great food and coffee there, which I hadn’t experienced on my other trips, which really made me appreciate it :) Give me good food and coffee and I’ll be happy!

The first day in the city we didn’t see the appeal either. But then after spending the next two days just wandering around and seeing where we ended up I definitely got the char of the city!

So glad you guys had a nice time! I love NYC! Sometimes I wish I stayed up there after college, but then I remind myself that I’d be living in a shoebox with 25 other people lol. It’s nice to go back and be able to splurge on things. I might have a few trips back up there this year!
