Weekending - Capturing The Little Things

During the weekends I tend to unplug as much as possible and not bring my camera out to capture the little moments. This past weekend though I tried to keep my blogger hat on and capture my weekend so I could show up here today with a little recap for you all. I will admit, I still suck at this, but I did manage to take a few pictures of the most important things from this weekend that have me still smiling this Monday morning.

One | Game night

Weekend in IcelandOn Friday night we finally got to bring out Cards Against Humanity for the first time, let me just say the game did not disappoint. I seriously laughed so hard I cried, this game is so wrong but so hilarious. Adding to the humor of it all was my equally hilarious friends and the several misunderstandings of the American slang words on the cards. If you have played this game you could only imagine the words I had to clarify for my friends.

Two | Redecorating our bedroom

Weekend in IcelandWeekend in IcelandI grew up in a house full of color in every room. Our flat in Iceland though is was full of white walls, making me feel like I was in a hospital. I had already convinced H to paint our living room and successfully got my way, but as soon as we finished painting that room I wanted to redecorate the bedroom. Finally, on Saturday morning we got our paint, laid down the papers on the floor and we H got to work while I took pictures in my pjs.

In my defense I did help paint a little bit.

Weekend in IcelandWeekend in IcelandOkay I am kidding, I only took the paint brush because I wanted my picture taken and once that was done handed it back over to H to resume his job.

Weekend in Iceland

Three | Shopping spree at Ikea

Weekend in IcelandWhile the paint dried H and I spent our Saturday afternoon in Ikea. The amount of time that can be spent in that store amazes me! Anyways, whenever we go to Ikea with one item in mind I find a dozen other items that I absolutely must have as well. Thankfully H is the voice of reason and puts those items back, but this past weekend, well I was given the green light! I just love redecorating a room, it makes it feel like a whole new place, and putting my style into the flat makes Iceland feel that much more like home.

Here is a little before and after shot, amazing what a little paint can do.

Before:

Weekend in IcelandAfter:

Weekend in Iceland I am so happy with how it turned out, we still have some finishing touches to add but so far I am loving my new bedroom look!

Four | Frozen yogurt

Weekend in IcelandSaturday night after putting the bedroom back together we headed off to get some frozen yogurt before settling on the couch for a cozy night in. True story, there is a frozen yogurt place just a block from my house. It took me over a year to realize that was what the place was. I had assumed it was some sort of restaurant from the outside and the name of the place. This is probably all for the best as I love frozen yogurt and would have made many trips there when I was home all day waiting for my visa.

Five | A rainy Sunday afternoon spent reading

Weekend in IcelandH thought he was being so sneaky taking my picture when I wasn’t looking. The real reason he was even coming into the room was to see if I had fallen asleep, just so he could prove his point that I am a grandma and require naps and early bedtimes. Joke was on him, I stayed awake the whole afternoon, although I wouldn’t have turned down a nap.

Weekend in IcelandTo me the perfect Sunday is spent with a good book. I just started reading “The Girl on The Train” and am hooked! I have already read 5 books this month towards my goal of reading 50 books this year, any book suggestions I should add to my list??

I just love a weekend with a good mix of productivity and relaxation! And H loves it even more when my to-list shrinks and he doesn’t have to worry about me hassling him for another weekend project, for a little while at least :)

Question of the Day?
Are you a fan of reading weekend recaps? Do you prefer a relaxing weekend or a productive weekend?

It really is the funniest game! Thank you Abby :)

We also went to IKEA this weekend but managed to get everything really fast as we did not want to miss the buss but I kinda missed the lazy walking about.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I do like the lazy walking about and browsing all their adorable show rooms! But then I just get a ton of ideas of more things that I want to buy and have no room for.

      • http://bailiehemborg.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

Yes I always get so jealous of the kitchens!

  • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

That wall looks great- I love how just one painted wall looks in a room! Your reading goal is so ambitious! Mine is 20 this year but I always get stuck on books that are really boring for me and tend to take a month to finish them :P

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Cynthia! I agree, it is amazing what a little bit of paint can do for a room! I have started a few books this month that I just knew weren’t for so I started others. I tend to get stuck on a book as well if i find it boring.

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

I love your painted wall! Do you all rent or does H own the place? If you rent, did you convince your landlord to let you paint and if so how?! I really want to paint, but ours is so against it! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Amanda! We rent and are super lucky to be able to paint. Apparently it is common here in Iceland to be able to paint in your rental which I am so thankful for.

I am right there with you girl! I am sooo bad at being a blogger right now… Cards Against Humanity is hilarious! I love playing that game!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That game is just so funny, I can’t even read the cards without laughing!

  • http://www.theoverseasescape.com/ Margo

Ha, I actually haven’t played cards against humanity but do LOVE ‘head’s up’, y’all should check it out. :) ps. I enjoy a good weekend recap!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I got H cards against humanity for Christmas and this was our first time bringing it out, hilarious! I have heard about this heads up game I will have to check it out!

  • http://ceciliaintherain.wordpress.com Cecilia

haha, this is where I can tell I am a true Scandinavian, because all I dream of is white walls everywhere right now! And IKEA - yes that is a daytrip in itself, particularly downstairs where all the decoration / kitchen / fabric and furnishing items are..

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha, I do like white walls but I like some color as well. IKEA, I feel like I need a timer set when I walk in so I won’t lose an entire day in there!

  • http://www.somethingsaturdays.com/the-blog.html Elizabeth @Something Saturdays

    I love redecorating!

And reading. But I never make enough time for it. I end up waiting until right before I go to bed to read, but then just end of falling asleep right away… I do have a reading goal this year though so I’m trying to make more of an effort, but I’ve started reading a travel book/journal that was written in the early 1800s so it can be hard to focus at times because the language is a bit different.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That is the same for me, I started my reading goal because I was not making enough time for it. Now I am trying to make the extra time and get back into reading more.

I love weekend recaps! I prefer to have a relaxing weekend but that is because I usually go to school on the weekends too and that is not “too productive”. Anyway, it’s nice always to just relax by writing or watching films, which in my case translates to sleeping through the first 10 minutes, hehe. Your new deco looks wonderful, loved the poster too :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha I am the same, I always fall asleep when we are watching movies! What are you going to school for? I am considering going back this fall, the thought of homework again though is so daunting!

      • http://www.thesunnysideothis.com/ Isabel

It’s a Master’s Program in International Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. Pretty fancy title but the truth is like an Economics Master Degree. The things is that this is a full-time program so all the courses are pretty intensive for a year then it’s 2 years to write your thesis. Gurl, I’m baaaarely making it lol. Homeworks AND lectures on the weekends, going to class even when I’m sick, going from 8am to 8pm. It’s crazy, but it’s worth it. At least I’m getting to know people the business/marketing field and I’m really learning a lot. I also was adamant about going back to school too but I’m almost half done with courses so thankfully it will be over soon! If you have the opportunity to continue studying, I say take it! Having a little extra knowledge never hurt nobody, lol (at least this is what I keep telling myself). In which field are you thinking of applying?

  • http://www.akeanesenseofadventure.com/ Christine @ A Keane Sense of A

Love the color! Redecorating is always fun! While I looove white in almost everything, when it comes to walls, color is good for the soul :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love having a splash of color mixed in with the white. Redecorating is always fun I so agree!

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

Cards Against Humanity is the best! I can only imagine how that would be for someone with a language barrier haha I love how your room turned out. We painted our living room very quickly after we moved into our place last year and finally had to do something about our bedroom. It was just so drab. A little paint definitely goes a long way! I like my weekends to be a mix of everything. I like to be a bit lazy, but we also love to get out for a big hike and do some exploring. I also try to get caught up with school work and schedule some blog posts over the weekend, so the week will be a little more manageable. Happy Monday!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is the best, it was so fun, I can’t not laugh when reading those cards! Once you have a little bit of color in one room it is hard to ignore the rest since they look so dull compared to the colorful one!

I agree, I like a mix on my weekends, productive but then plenty of time to relax so I am ready for the week!

  • http://www.gorjaeous.com/ Jae

I’ve heard so much about Cards Against Humanity, and it’s making me curious! I love frozen yogurts, too! I had a berry-flavored yogurt last weekend. Yum! :D

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

This was our first time playing it and it was a blast, I see now why everyone is talking about it!

  • http://www.lifeplus1.me/ Lifeplus1

I love the color you chose. It’s very pretty.

We just bought the Cards Against Humanity game too. I’ve not played it yet but I’ve heard good things. Can’t wait to try it out!

When it comes to weekends I like a mixture of exciting and quiet. It totally depends on my mood.

Thank you :) Purple is my favorite color so I love it too.

This was our first time playing Cards Against Humanity and it was a blast, I can’t wait to play it again!

  • http://superduperfantastic.com/ suki

CAH always brings out the best (aka the worst) in people. LOL ;-) Very rarely do I find myself at a games night where that hasn’t been one of the options for play.

I’m hesitant on putting stuff up on the wall over my bed. Earthquakes and all. :P

    It looks really great though.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

This was my first time playing CAH and it was hilarious! A game night staple for sure.

It actually took me a long time to agree to having something hanging over our bed, I am sitll a bit nervous about it!

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

i like my productive weekends and i like my relaxing weekends - they balance each other out! i’m so sad we don’t have an ikea super close by, though it is probably for the best because my husband would be verrrry mad at what i would spend there. one day i’m gonna make the 3 hour drive and buy ALL THE THINGS. meanwhile.. now i want some fro yo.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

In Oregon I lived two hours away from Ikea and now I live like ten minutes, way to close!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

I love this recap - you two are just too cute!! Your bedroom looks amazing! I’m loving that colour of the feature wall :) I’ve never been to ikea but I’d love to go some time because I’m seriously obsessed with decorating!! And I haven’t played cards against humanity before but it sounds hilarious so now I really want to! We spent a busy weekend up North visiting Ty’s parents and it was really lovely! So hot and humid and we spent most of our days outside :) I started a new book and watched a bit of the Australia Open too! I really want to read your book - I read the description and it sounds really good! Are you reading it on your kindle? Xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Awe thanks Carly! There isn’t an Ikea near me in Oregon but now I live like ten minutes away and want to go all the time! Your weekend sounds lovely, the heat sounds amazing to me right now although I know how hot and humid Australia can get and its not the most comfortable. What book did you start? I was reading it on my kindle, and already finished it, was so good!

  • http://anestingnomad.com/ Rachel

That purple looks great! I’m desperate to paint but we rent so… no dice. One day!

Good work in Ikea - I LOVE that place (my bank account doesn’t, though).

    -Rachel

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am so happy that we were able to paint even though we rent, such a difference some paint can do!

      • http://anestingnomad.com/ Rachel

I think Icelandic landlords need to have a word with UK landlords… I don’t know why they’re so anti-it here :-/

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know, it is the same in the US as well that you can’t paint so I am very happy we were able to here!

  • hena tayeb

love that print! looks like a great weekend.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you! I hope you had a great weekend too :)

  • http://www.therachaelway.com/ Rachael

That print is awesome!! Such a fun weekend. My goal is 50 books too, and I just finished book 6 :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Isn’t that print cool, one of the guys at H’s work made it. I just finished book 5, The Girl on the Train, loved it! What are you reading?

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

Dang, he did a good job of painting! I like the color you guys picked!!!
Cards Against Humanity is HILARIOUS!!! I wish I could’ve seen you trying to translate the slang, bahahaha!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha seriously, questions like “what is road head?” killed me ha.

  • http://www.kati-rose.com/ Kati Rose

I hate hate hated white walls. My first college apartment was all white and we couldn’t paint and it drove me nuts. My roommate and I’s solution was to put up as many colorful and vibrant objects as possible. I love the color you two choose! Subdued but still powerful!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Same here, white walls are just not my favorite, I need some color and life into the room! Thank you Kati, purple is my favorite color so I am a big fan :)

  • http://meetatthebarre.blogspot.com/ Amanda Elizabeth

Seriously what a difference girl! Love that color you picked! True story I still haven’t played Cards Against Humanity!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Amanda! I bought H cards against humanity for Christmas and this was our first time playing it. Its hilarious, a must have for game night!

I’m cracking up at even the thought of play CAH with non-native english speakers!! ahhh!! the wall. so gooooood.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Haha it was hilarious!

  • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

Sounds like a pretty great weekend! I also wasted a good few hours in IKEA, but the food is pretty tasty!

Personally, I enjoy weekend recaps. I like seeing people’s everyday life :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am the same way, I like reading about people’s everyday life and what they get up to:)

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chicadeedee

I’ve introduced all my friends to cards against humanity, it’s soooo funny! I’m in the ‘needing to paint every white wall’ phase at the moment, but deciding on colours that will match each other and flow well is the issue. I like weekend recaps because I’m nosy, and it makes me feel better when someone else spent their day reading in their pjs :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am the same way, wanting to paint every room and get rid of all the white! I like reading weekend recaps as well so I can see what daily things people get up to.

  • http://readtravelbecome.com Mere Salazar

Ooh sounds like a nice weekend, indeed! I like productivity mixed with relaxation, although I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the relaxation bit the most ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I like to try and get all my productive things done on Saturday so Sunday can be spent relaxing :)
