The most winter storms in decades.
The coldest spring on record.
The wettest summer in years.
The most snowfall in one night in 40 years.
Iceland has been all about breaking weather records since I moved here.
Friday morning we woke up to our first real snow of the winter. Everything looked so beautiful in its fresh winter coat, but apparently that snowfall wasn’t enough. Saturday morning we woke up to another 12 inches of snow, the most snowfall in one night in Reykjavik in over 40 years.
While I have not been the biggest fan of the other weather records Iceland has set during my two years here, the most snowfall in one night, that was a record I can handle, who doesn’t love a winter wonderland?
It was pretty easy to figure out what we were doing Saturday morning once I saw all the beautiful snow out my window! As soon as the sun came out (around 11am!) I put on as many layers as possible, grabbed my camera, and headed out to explore the neighborhood in its new white coat.
One thing I did not take into account, the fact that the snow was 12+inches deep and the sidewalks were not cleared. This made for some interesting walking, and lots of sinking deep into the snow.
I didn’t let the deep snow stop me from my walk, I am pretty sure I looked like either a very drunk person or someone just learning to walk again, walking in that deep of snow is tough! I get points though because one I did not fall, and two I was out walking around in -5°C while the rest of Reykjavik stayed cozy and warm inside.
Something about fluffy snow though, it just makes things look so beautiful, I was determined to get pictures of the snow covering the colorful houses of Reykjavik, even if I could hardly walk around it was worth it.
Now I can’t decide if I like the colorful houses in my neighborhood covered in snow or glistening in the sun?!
The ladies in the picture above, they were marching through the snow in high heels, like true Viking women. I wanted to stop them and ask their secret, but then I slipped on some ice in front of them and all bravery I had to try to ask them in Icelandic left. One day I will learn the secret for walking around on icy streets in heels.
An ice skating rink in the making, can’t wait to attempt to skate around and then visit the Christmas market!
A snowy, sunny, weekend, it is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas around here!
The rest of my weekend was filled with lots of cozy reading time, attending the Christmas lighting ceremony downtown and sorting out are holiday plans for December. Christmas is in full swing here in Reykjavik, bring on all the holiday fun!
Question of the Day?
Have you started decorating for Christmas? What did you get up to this weekend?
