I Got Sunburnt in the Arctic

Happy Monday!

Our weekend was spent outside taking full advantage of the amazing weather we have been having. Iceland may not be the hottest place but when the sun shines it sure is strong! I will just say it is possible to get sunburnt in the Arctic.

Since the sun is streaming through my windows this morning I can’t focus long enough to write a post so instead I am letting the pictures from my phone do the talking. From a wedding in the South of Iceland to sunny days in Reykjavik it has been one wonderful week.

Iceland Our cabin we stayed in last weekend in the South of Iceland. Such a beautiful area, the views are stunning.

Iceland Iceland LandscapeIceland Countryside
Wedding A real Icelandic countryside party, complete with an old barn, guitar playing and everyone in traditional Icelandic sweaters.

ChurchThe old church the wedding was in. In traditional Icelandic weddings men and women sit on opposite sides during the ceremony. The bride and groom also sit on opposite sides next to their fathers while the ceremony is conducted by the priest and not until the end do they come together and stand in the middle. It was an interesting wedding experience!

Beach in Reykavik The beach behind my work. If the sun is out this place is packed.

Reykavik HarborI love walking around the harbor on sunny days and looking at all the boats.

EsjaAn evening run with views of the always beautiful Esjan.

Spring FlowersMy neighbor has the most beautiful flowers in her yard!

Grotta On windy days this part of the sea is full of windsurfers. Not sure if I would ever be brave enough to try windsurfing here in Iceland but the are fun to watch.

Midnight sunThe midnight sun setting at 2am over downtown Reykjavik. If only I could stay up this late all the time so I could always watch this gorgeous sunset!

I am off to enjoy more of these amazing views of Reykjavik before I have to head back to work tomorrow. Have a great week everyone!

Question of the Day?
Have you ever experience wedding traditions different than the ones you are use to? What is your favorite way to spend a sunny day?

Seeing the different traditions was really fun. And isn’t that cabin so amazing, I loved staying there!

Ps - I love the Icelandic jumper element!

It really was an awesome experience! And those Icelandic sweaters are a sure sign you are at a true Icelandic gathering :)

The pictures are gorgeous as per usual! In English weddings the bridesmaids and groomsmen don’t stand at the front of the church with the bride and groom during the wedding. They sit in the first row! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t it so interesting seeing the different ways weddings are held. Typically in Iceland they don’t even have bridesmaids and groomsmen!

Oh I really want to go to the cabin in the South of Iceland. It looks like the hiking would be amazing!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is an amazing place to stay and Iceland has some awesome hiking!

Gorg! Didn’t realise there were beaches like this in Iceland!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Definitely not what you think when you think of Iceland! It is the only one but at least I live near by, trick myself into thinking I am on a tropical beach:)

Whose wedding was it? I loooove that celebration in the barn. It reminds me a lot of the Sigur Ros documentary, Heima. (And that first photo you posted is just UNREAL in its beauty) Looks like you’ve had an amazing week indeed!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Some of our good friends:) It was a really amazing week!

All that green! Beautiful! How do you sleep with the sun setting so late?! I would go a little crazy

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am surprised that is doesn’t bother me too much, you just have a lot of energy and my inner clock is a bit off. Black out curtains in the bedroom are a must have though otherwise I probably would have big problems!

That cabin looks so cute! Sounds like an amazing weekend, and feel like it gives a really good sense of Iceland. That is awesome you got to attend a wedding…what a great way to really get to know the culture.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It was a really fun experience attending the wedding. The cabins here are so cute and always seem to be surrounded with some stunning landscapes!

Beautiful photos. In a Paraguayan wedding they typically have two separate ceremonies, one at the church and then at the reception they have another which is the civil ceremony.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is so interesting learning about different cultures and their traditions!

I’ve been to a Nepali wedding, but it was more or less American-ized as that’s what the couple wanted (they were proud of being newly minted Americans!). However, they still served traditional Nepali food, and oh, how YUMMY! Can’t ever get enough curry!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

      Sounds amazing, I love curry!

You always have the most gorgeous scenic pictures! I haven’t been to that many weddings that haven’t been too far off from traditional. The last one I went to had a female pastor and that was definitely a welcomed change up!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! This was my first experience and I was so confused when I was told to sit on the opposite side of the church. A different wedding experience than what I was use to but a fun time anyways! A female pastor would definitely be a welcomed change!

I wish I’d gone to the beach this weekend, it was boiling hot here in Germany! Gorgeous pictures AS USUAL!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! This weekend was amazing, not as hot but it was a great temperature to be outside and enjoy.

Sounds like a great weekend. I’ve been to some Russian weddings which, to be honest, aren’t too much different except they drive around the city for hours to take pictures at various places of interest and drink about 5000x more alcohol than at any other party I’ve ever been to.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha sounds like the Russians throw a good party!

I can’t believe the sun sets at 2 AM!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It really is crazy! I am getting a bit use to it but is strange not seeing darkness at night.

It really is such a beautiful country!

So cool that you got to see a traditional wedding like that! We have a Filipino wedding in the Fall and I’m so anxious to see what they do!!! :D

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ohh that sounds exciting. It was really cool to see a traditional Icelandic wedding and the surroundings were so beautiful.

We were invited to a friends wedding in India but the plane tickets were too expensive, it would have been amazing to go though. It’s cool the different traditions each country has, but even all of my friends weddings in the US that I’ve gone to have been so different.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh darn that would have been an interesting wedding to see! I agree, I think more and more everyone is trying to make their weddings unique so they all seem quite different.

  • http://weiderjl.blogspot.com/ Jenn

I’ve always wanted to go to a wedding in a different country! I always thought it would be so interesting!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It was really interesting to see!

  • http://www.adventuresofalondonkiwi.blogspot.com/ adventuresofalondonkiwi

How cool! I found the English thing of inviting different people to different section on a wedding (the ceremony, and the reception) really rather strange…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is interesting so do they seat you with others that you don’t know instead of putting groups of friends together?
