The Day Sydney Was Painted Red

Welcome to Travel Tuesday!

Today I am stealing H’s photos and sharing his experience during a dust storm in Sydney, Australia.

Red Dust Storm
In 2009 Sydney turned red over night as strong winds carried dust from the east of Australia, a very rare and incredible occurrence. When H told me about it and showed me his pictures my first thought was, I would have been terrified if I woke up to this! H said he had woke up around 5 am to and when he looked out his window and saw all the red dust he had no idea what was going on. Of course this didn’t stop him from rushing outside to take these amazing pictures.

H said that after a few hours a lot of the dust has blown away so the color wasn’t as bright, but it was quite the clean up for the city. It may have been messy but it looks beautiful!

Sydney Bridge Walk

When I was living in Sydney I rode the train across the Sydney bridge into downtown every morning. The views you see along the bridge are beautiful, from the Sydney skyline to the Sydney Opera House, I loved those train rides.

I mentioned before my terrifying bridge climb experience where I climbed to the top of the bridge at night!

Sydney Bridge Climb

This experience was amazing but I wanted to take in the views from the Sydney Bridge with my feet on the ground and during the daytime. We headed out one afternoon to walk the pathway across the bridge where there is a photo opt everywhere you look.

Looking back through my pictures I realized I took dozens of photos of the Sydney Opera House. It is so beautiful though I couldn’t help but take a picture from every possible angle!

We did our bridge walk so that we would end on the side where you find my favorite part of Sydney, The Rocks. I love everything about this area, the awesome views of the Sydney skyline, beautiful parks, amazing food, you can always find something going on in The Rocks.

Before headed down from the bridge to enjoy the rest of the day in The Rocks we looked back and took in this view of the Sydney Harbor one last time.

Never will get over that view!

Question of the Day?
Would you do the Sydney Bridge Climb at night? Do you have a place with your favorite views?

Do’s and Don’ts of Australia

Travel WednesdayWelcome to another Travel Wednesday, this weeks post takes us back to Australia for a recap of my travels outside of my home in Sydney. In case you missed the first few Travel Wednesday posts you can read them here: Travel WednesdayAustralia: Must do in Sydney

Do spend a day exploring the Blue Mountains

Blue MountainsJust a two hour train ride away from Sydney this is a great day trip to get you out of the city and spend some time with the beautiful Australian nature.

Blue Mountains WaterfallsDon’t have a panic attack in the cable car that takes you across the valley floor

Blue Mountain Cable CarIt’s completely terrifying, at least it is if your afraid of heights like me. I guess Australia was really were I faced my fear of heights!

Blue Mountains CablewayI will admit I was a bit dramatic when I was in the cable car, but really did you see how thin those cables are, that can’t be safe! I recommend not spending your time in the cable car panicking but instead enjoy the ride and take in all the amazing views of the Blue Mountains. Once you are safely on the other side and out of the cable cars you will be exploring beautiful forest perfect for photo sessions. The terrifying ride is definitely worth it :)

Do go to surf camp

Surfers Weekend beachesLearn to surf at some beautiful beaches, wear awesome wet suits (hopefully yours doesn’t have holes in it like mine) and party with your new surfing friends, bonus if their Irish because they know how to party.

Surfers WeekendDon’t trust the Australian surf instructor

Surf InstructorThe dangerous surf instructor! How is he allowed to make sure people don’t drown while surfing??
If he says he can help you find something just know he is probably to drunk to understand what is going on and your best off to walk away, harm may possible come to you in a form of a thrown basket.

Do go wine tasting in the beautiful country side of Hunter Valley

Wine TastingYou may even see a kangaroo hoping around the vineyard, or your wine buzz will make you think you saw one.

Hunter Valley 008

Don’t forget to drink every last drop of that delicious wine, you will dream about it later on

Do spend as much time as possible in the beautiful Cairns

Cairns 106

Go scuba diving, see a lighting storm, eat as much gelato as you can, no matter what you will have a great time.

Scuba Diving

Don’t miss out on visiting this beautiful area of Australia, really just don’t!

Cairns

Do spend a weekend exploring the beautiful city streets of Melbourne

Melbourne

Take in the beautiful architecture, enjoy the European charm of the city and take full advantage of the cafes hidden in little alleyways.

Melbourne Clock

Melbourne Horses

Don’t miss out on the beautiful views from the plane when flying back into Sydney

Sydney Beaches

Australia was an amazing three months in my life and I have really enjoyed recapping my time there with you all. When I left Australia I had 6 months left of school before I graduated with my Bachelors degree. It was quite tough leaving the beautiful beaches of Australia and going back into a classroom.

Last Aussie Days

Many sad faces were made during that packing experience. Oh how I miss that small, extremely warm and messy room.

I know this weekly series is about my travel story but in case you haven’t guessed it yet my love story with H is very intertwined with my travel story, guess that’s what happens when your in an international relationship. It was no fun saying goodbye to H when I left Australia but before I knew it he was visiting me in America and our story continued. Thanks to my graduation gift, a plane ticket to Iceland, my travel story continued as well as I headed over to meet my favorite Australian souvenir.

Gulfoss IcelandWhile I now call Iceland home I thought it would be fun to continue on with my travel story in chronological order and share my thoughts on my first time here. Be sure to check back in next week as I head off to visit Iceland and hear H speak a different language for the first time as well. I will say it was a bit of a shock, I forgot I was dating someone who had a different first language than English! Tune in next week for more travel fun:)

Question of the Day?
What are your travel plans for 2014? Any trips coming up soon??

Travel Wednesday- Australia

addtext_com_MDMyNjI0Nzk0NTEHappy Wednesday everyone, and welcome to another post in Travel Wednesday. In case you missed my first post last week you can check it out here. Australia-The Beginning of my Travel Journey

Today’s Travel Wednesday is all about Sydney, Australia, my home for 3 1/2 months in 2010. During my time in Sydney I was able to do and see so many things which made it difficult to choose what pictures to post and what to talk about today. Basically I just think everyone needs to visit Australia at one point in their life and experience the beauty of the country for themselves (if only it was that simple to get over there though right).

Before I get into the rest of the post I just had to share how my time in Australia started off. I mentioned in my previous post that I got incredibly sick on my flight to Australia and even passed out on the plane. As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough I have to share how I made my entrance into my new home for the next 3 months, the lovely outdated student accommodation at GVA.GVAWhen the cab arrived at GVA I was more than out of it. Between the jet lag, the fact that I hadn’t slept in over 24 hours and the lovely bump on my head from passing out on the plane I was a mess! So when the cab driver handed me one of my suitcases to hold on to I clearly wasn’t all there and just let go of it. My bag then preceded to roll down the hill in front of GVA, insert me running after it like a crazy person and walking back to the cab completely out of breath and even more of a mess (but at least I saved my bag). Such a wonderful first impression, I was aiming for the unforgettable angel and I am pretty sure I crushed it! Of course I needed to reenact this moment so I would never forget it.Last Aussie Days 097Anyways enough embarrassing stories for one country. Back to the good stuff. Here are some of my favorite things I did while living in Sydney.

Visit Darling HarborLast Aussie Days 029Oh Darling Harbor how I miss the many lovely days I spent with you. The company that I was interning for was actually located right near the harbor so I got to enjoy many of my lunch breaks taking in the beautiful views. I could write an entire post about the Darling Harbor but here is a summary of my favorite things to do, eat, and see while in the harbor.

Visit the Sydney Aquarium
Be sure to walk through the shark tunnel!Georgia_Aquarium_-_Ocean_Voyager_Tunnel_Jan_2006

Spend a day walking the harbor65951_115224065203304_7788054_nThere is always something happening at Darling Harbor and it is a great place for sightseeing and lots of street entertainment. With views like this it is easy to spend an entire day down here.
155301_128448343880876_4071945_nIf your lucky you may even spot Waldo walking around.Last Aussie Days 019That guy walking by doesn’t look to impressed but Waldo owned this outfit and walked the harbor like it was his runway. I just had to share this picture, shortest shorts I have ever seen a man wear!

Watch a movie in the IMAX theaterimax-sydney-482x298The IMAX theater in Darling Harbor is the largest screen in the world. I was able to catch none other than Harry Potter on this screen and it was amazing, as close as I will get to actually being at Hogwarts. This was also H and I’s “official” first date, nothing more romantic than a Harry Potter movie for a first date ;)

Grab a drink at the Orbit BarLast Aussie Days 079 Finish your day at the harbor off with a drink at the Orbit Bar. Located on the 47th floor you have some amazing views of the harbor and city.Hunter Valley 062 My through the window picture doesn’t do the views from the Orbit Bar justice. They are amazing though and its a great place to have a drink with friends.

Leaving the wonderful Darling Harbor area here is some of my other favorite memories of my time in Sydney.

Take a ferry to Manly Beach39576_115226135203097_1518675_nWhile you can get to Manly beach by bus or car I think the ferry ride is part of the experience. It is a short ferry trip from downtown Sydney and is full of beautiful views of the city in the distance, sailboats in the harbor and small beaches along the way.Australia Dec 088Australia Dec 091

Australia Dec 092 Manly was my favorite beach to spend the day at with its laid back feel and boardwalk full of fun beach shops its a great place to spend a Saturday.

See a performance at the Opera House63658_1587724580694_4309252_nThe Opera House is iconic when you think of Australia, just look at how beautiful it is! No wonder we see it printed everywhere promoting Sydney. I am so glad I got the chance to visit and see a ballet, but if you don’t have the time to see a performance at least drop in for a day tour. They usually offer free tours one day of the week so be sure to check in to see which day the tour is free.69532_128438913881819_7327154_nAt the very least walk by the Opera House and take a billion pictures to try and capture the beauty of this building. Look at how massive it looks behind me! Oh and those stairs up to it, not the easiest to walk up when in heels, just a tip.

The Sydney Bridge Climb34433_118193458239698_7372917_nYes, I climbed this! I should first off I should say that I am terrified of heights, its my biggest fear. So when a friend first asked me if I wanted to do the Sydney Bridge climb I didn’t even think twice before saying no way. Funny how travel can change you though, seems to give you an extra boast of confidence and bravery when you need it, and before I knew it there I was suiting up to do the Sydney Bridge climb.73222_118198184905892_4695753_nThey make sure you take off any piece of jewelry, bobby pins, everything before your allowed to head out for your climb. Our climb was of course the option that took us on the outer layer of the bridge, 1,332 steps to be exact. You can chose do to the climb either during the day or at night. For some reason I felt that if we did it at night I wouldn’t be as afraid since I couldn’t see as well how high up I was, and the pictures on the website for the night climb looked like this.66611_1518338006073_1323800_nYes please sign me up for a view like this! There is quite the climb to even get outside to the bridge and I think that part was the most difficult for me. You are all attached together though on a long wire so I didn’t have long to stall which I think is the only reason I went through with it. When we reached the top I was so glad I pushed myself and faced my fears, it would have been such a shame to miss out on such an amazing experience because I was afraid. Bonus, once we were at the top and getting our photo’s taken a firework show was going on over the harbor making that moment even more magical.67532_118193281573049_277010_nMoral of the story face your fears and amazing things will come! And if your in Sydney please do the Bridge Climb, you can thank me later for all the unforgettable views you will see.

Have dinner at Sydney Tower67175_129530410439336_435509_nSince I had gotten over my fear of heights I figured why not go have dinner in the tallest freestanding building in Sydney. At least this time I was enjoying spectacular views inside a room and while being treated to some amazing food.75652_120241798034864_6900845_nThe Sydney Tower is a revolving restaurant so you are getting amazing 360 views of downtown Sydney at night. They have a large buffet menu with every kind of seafood you can think of,enough deserts to make Willy Wonka happy, and even kangaroo meat if your into that kinda thing. It is a fun dining experience and one of my favorite evenings during my trip to Australia.

Visit Bondi Beach
I can’t list the best things to do in Sydney without mentioning the famous Bondi Beach. I only visited this beach a few times as it was a bit far from where I was living and it tends to always be very crowded.
the_beach_looking_north
I am still amazed at how quickly this beach fills up! On one of my visits to Bondi Beach our beach day was ruined by a thunder storm and I was even more amazed at how quickly the beach was cleared once it started raining. No trip to Sydney would be complete though with being a beach bum at Bondi for the day, so pack your beach bags and head over.154205_124141654311545_6841750_nAfter writing this post I am more than ready to head back over to Australia and do it all over again! Next Travel Wednesday I will be sharing some of my Australian adventures outside the lovely Sydney. Like the time I went wine tasting with H in the beautiful Australian countryside.Hunter Valley 014 Give me a room full of barrels of wine and I am one happy girl (H can stay too, as long as he doesn’t drink to much of my supply).

Stayed tuned for more Travel Wednesday fun, I will be back with a new post after the holidays :)

Question of the Day?
If you have visited Sydney, any favorites you had while you were there? Have you every faced one of your fears while traveling?
