It Started At The Last Supper

After finishing our delicious lunch my mood had improved from not being allowed inside Duomo di Milano and I was ready to continue exploring Milan. Right by the Duomo di Milano you will find one of the most beautiful shopping centers I have ever seen. Milan is known for its fashion and the shopping centers we visited did not disappoint.

Since there was no way H and I could afford anything in this fancy but pretty mall we left and headed back out to the beautiful streets of Milan.

We eventually made our way over to Sforza Castle which was absolutely beautiful.
Milan Italy
Built in the 15th century it was once one of the largest citadels in Europe. It now is used as a museum with several art galleries but H and I didn’t head inside to check them out. We had been walking all day so it was nice to enjoy some sunshine and relax on the beautiful castle grounds.

Before we called it a day H and I headed off to try and see the Last Supper painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. By this point we were both tired and a bit cranky so when we arrived to the convent and there was only one place left for a showing in an hour I had no interest in seeing the painting. H was really interested in seeing it though and this was when we had our first challenge as a couple traveling together.

When your traveling with your partner having good communication is key(okay this is always important but traveling makes it triple as important), this includes voicing your opinion on what you want to do with your day. Making a decision on what I want to do is not my best quality and I tend to be the annoying one that just shrugs my shoulders and says I don’t care. In this situation this was not helping at all. Having two separate ideas of what you want to do is totally fine, just be sure to speak up and say what you actually want to do (note to self).

We resolved the issue quickly and from then on I attempted to be better about making plans instead of just counting on H to figure everything out. I am still not the best on stating my opinion on what I want to do but I am most definitely getting better, at least I think so. Lesson learned though, when traveling with your partner be sure to contribute to the planning process, others may get annoyed if they are stuck doing all the work.

Once we had resolved this little issue we found out that it was too late for H to get to see the Last Supper. He was pretty bummed about this so it was my turn to take him off for some delicious food to cheer him up.

Our dinner turned out to be some of the best meals we had on our entire trip in Italy, and the wine was by far our favorite. Our waiter was so nice as well, he was from Naples and wrote down a list of places for us to visit. He also gave us directions to the best pizza in Naples, thanks so much Mr. Waiter!

Our time in Milan was short and sweet and the next morning we headed off bright and early for our next stop, Venice!

Question of the Day?
Have you ever faced any challenges traveling as a couple?

Compromise is key. As is being okay doing things separately. Not all the time- but if you are traveling for an extensive period of time together I think it’s nice to do a few things apart just so you don’t start going insane. (Or maybe that’s just me?!) i’m very jealous of your Italian adventures. Italy is one of those countries that I’ve always been dying to explore but haven’t yet. x

I am also a big fan of doing things on your own, last time we were in London I went to tea alone while Fredrik stayed in and read and it was wonderful!

I agree, I think its important to know when to take your own space!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think doing things separately was something we quickly learned on that month long of traveling together! Italy is so great, I want to go back and explore some more.

I love the little tid-bits of history! Beautiful pictures!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much. H knew so much about the history of the places we visited, guess thats the difference from learning about European history in my high school versus his European history classes.

It looks lovely. Looking forward to hearing about your Venice adventures.

Travelling with someone else is always difficult if you don’t communicate what you want. I’m really laid back, but if there are particular things we want to see in a day we agree to them first. It’s amazing what travel teaches you about yourself and your relationship.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, we learned so much about our relationship and it really is something that shows you if your relationship will make it or not.

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chic-a-DeeDee

I’m the opposite, I’m the one who knows what I want to do, and once I’ve done it then I’m fine with whatever. I’m normally the planner on holidays though and it is super annoying when everyone you are with says they don’t mind what you do, when in actuality they just don’t want to say anything. Communication is definitely key!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am jealous of you! I have gotten so much better but I still have a tendency to just shrug my shoulders and go with the flow.

my husband is way more laid back than i am when it comes to travelling but we make a great team. when we were in italy, we rented a car and drove from city to city (BEST THING EVER!) and ended up lost so many times. when we drove to rome, we got lost and ended up driving through a walking-only piazza by accident so imagine a thousand walking tourists in a piazza and a tiny smart car slowly making its way through that crowded piazza thinking: WTF IS GOING ON?!?! hahahah

    Hi Kiki!
I just discovered your blog, it’s lovely!
Must add it to my feeds!!
I was in Milano one year ago, I didn’t visit the Duomo either but we went on top of it!
    It was breathtaking!!
    Have fun in Venice!

I loved exploring the castle! I did a little walking tour with my family and thought it was the cutest!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh I bet that was so interesting! I was surprised to find such a large castle in the middle of the city.

Your pictures are so beautiful! We travel really well together the only times either one of us run into a problem is when we are hungry (usually me)..so making sure to pack snacks has definitely helped!

    • BlushandBarbells

Yes same here! I cannot stand to be hungry - it turns me into some kind of monster!

      • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I have a serious case of hangry!

        • http://voyageofthemeemee.com/ Amanda MeeMee

True story: Pete thought about breaking up with me a few months into things when we drove to Canada and I got hungry while trying to find somewhere to eat. Two words: raging bitch.

          • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

This has been a situation in our relationship as well. If you want to date me you better bring snacks!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Agreed, we always had snacks in our bags after this, I am not a nice hungry person!

  • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

How great is it when you have a friendly waiter willing to give you some tips. My now, ex boyfriend and I did a 24 hour road trip through Australia… not sure what that says?! haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha, sounds like your ex couldn’t make the cut for your travel dreams!

  • Rachel Murphree

I seriously need to go to Milan. I am working on the same thing with traveling, about voicing opinions. I am notoriously the shoulder shrugging, “okay, whatever” type who then gets cranky and fussy as the day goes on. I am getting much better at just figuring out and articulating what it is that I do want to do, and speaking up.

I am glad I am not the only one! I am finally getting better but I still tend to just shrug my shoulders and let the other person decide.

I just booked tickets for Milan! So excited. Do you have any suggestions for a hotel? Where was that delicious meal?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

How exciting! I wish I had the name of the restaurant, we found it in some alley, thats where all the best ones are! We only were there for one full day so I don’t have many suggestions sorry! But please go inside the Duomo so I can see all your pictures!

      • http://luyoutravel.blogspot.com/ Elizabeth Georgian

I will go into the Duomo and take a lot of photos!

  • http://www.blondebananablog.com/ Anna R

Love your photos! Milan was one of my favorite places in Italy because it wasn’t too touristy and I love to shop. Also a big fan of aperitivo and being able to relax with drinks and a picnic in Parco Sempione!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, Milan was one of the less touristy places we visited in Italy. Having a nice picnic in the sunshine is always great!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

Milan looks just as beautiful as I imagined! I love your comment about needing to speak up and voice your opinion about what you want to do! I used to be like this as well but I can now attest to the importance and value of contributing to the planning process so you and your travel companion are both invested and you feel like you are in it together! Can’t wait for the next instalment :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It can be so difficult at times but so important to be able to speak your mind! Thanks so much, glad your enjoying them;)
