The Perfect Combo

Happy Monday everyone. How was your weekend?

My weekend was the perfect mix of low key and fun. Over the weekend I was starting to feel a bit better and after being stuck in bed for most of the week it felt so nice to finally get out and do something. Lets recap shall we.

Friday
Friday was my first day back at work since Monday so it was a busy day trying to play catch up. I came home exhausted and ready for bed at 4 but instead had to get my party dress on to attend a work event with H.

In Iceland they have “annual balls” where all the companies in the same industry have a night out to celebrate the past years work. H works in advertising so his annual ball is with all the other advertising agencies in Iceland. The event is like the Oscars for advertising with different categories and awards.

I have a marketing degree so I love attending the annual ball and getting to see all the best ad’s of the year. This year was filled with neon lights, a candy bar which I was sure to make H stock up at, and tons of marketing connections made.

When I attend these work events with H I always get super nervous since I won’t know anyone or what they are saying. I tend to work myself up a bit to much and think I will be so uncomfortable when in the end it turns out completely fine. This year was no different and I had a great night with H.

Saturday
After a fun night out on Friday I was ready for a quiet day at home and that was just what I got. I did manage to get dressed for a short outing to the store, I don’t trust H to do the shopping alone, he would come home only with steaks and skyr.

What is skyr you might ask? Skyr is a traditional Icelandic dairy product, think extra thick greek yogurt, that has been a staple in the Icelandic diet for centuries. It is basically the main product you find in the refrigerate section, good thing I love the stuff! Just check out this picture to get the idea. And this is from one of the smaller stores in town as well!

Skyr
After stocking up on skyr, seriously one shelf in our fridge in always stocked with it, I resumed my place on the couch were I enjoyed the rest of my day blowing my nose and maybe complaining a bit about how terrible I felt. I’m a joy when I am sick:)

Sunday
Sunday was a beautiful sunny day here in Reykjavik. I made sure to snap a photo of us out on a walk to prove that the sun does shine here, I may have caught H off guard but oh well.

Sunny Day
A few weeks ago some friends of ours invited us to a exhibit called Kling & Bang by an Icelandic artist. The exhibit was interesting but standing in a room for an hour attempting to figure out this piece of art was not my cup of tea. Of course I was the one who dragged H to this and he ended up really enjoying the event, at least someone had fun!

One thing you often see here in Reykjavik is a ton of street graffiti and the exhibit we attended was right next to an area that is basically covered in street art. I snapped a few photos of my favorites, this is art that I understand.

Iceland Street Art
Sunday was also Konudagur (Women’s Day) here in Iceland, which is basically the Icelandic version of Valentine’s Day. The guys even get their own day in January to get spoiled, all about equality here in Iceland. I had already been spoiled on Valentine’s Day but I of course had to experience the Icelandic holiday as well. While there was no chocolate or flowers H did spend a few hours helping me fix up my blog design, I got a yummy breakfast and dinner made for me, and to top it off the house was cleaned, he is a keeper:)

Women's Day in Iceland
It was a great relaxing weekend and I am finally starting to feel a bit more like myself again. I have a busy week ahead of me with promising opportunities at work, my book club that I am looking forward to and my first girls night in Iceland, no time to be sick! Hope you all have a wonderful week, and if not cheer up Scandal is finally back on!

Question of the Day?
Do you enjoy attending art exhibits? Anyone else a Scandal fan?

Thanks so much;) I am a big fan of the Icelandic candy so we of course had to hit up the candy bar!

that gala sounds fab! and yes, all the way, to art exhibits…even if the art is ‘meh’ the people watching is always up there ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

People watching is always a bonus at the art exhibits, as well as hearing how everyone interprets it!

sounds like a very solid week - last week of february, enjoy it!

Yeah for Scandal being back on!!! I like the idea of Konudagur over Valentine’s day but men having their own day? lol I feel like isn’t every day theirs already? ;-) Looks like a fabulous weekend art shows are one of my favorite activities.

I am so excited for Scandal to be back on, feels like forever! Haha I totally agree, men don’t need their own day on top of all the others they claim!

  • Jessica Shannon

I’ve never heard of skyr but wow, they must really love it up there! I will have to see if I can find it here to try it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think skyr is the main product in the stores, at least it seems like it! In the states it is being sold under the name Siggi in case you look for it;)

  • http://sophieinclogs.wordpress.com/ Sophie

Skyr sounds pretty delicious I must say - as a big Greek yogourt/dairy fan I would definitely love to try it.
I do enjoy art exhibits but at the same time I always have this nagging suspicion that I don’t actually understand what I’m supposed to be appreciating … Although fortunately the Dutch masters are pretty straightforward!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

You would love skyr, and its super healthy with the flavored types having usually just a few grams of sugar and tons of protein! Haha I totally understand, I feel I may miss the point at times but at lest were appreciating something!

I wish Spain had their own female version of Valentine’s day! Your man sounds like a dream, such a sweetie. I was ill in bed for a week as well, so know what you are going through, it sucks. Although I am up and better now, I still have this horrid cough and runny nose. I hope you get better, the only thing that got me through my week was homemade chicken noodle soup (recipe on my blog!). Hope you have a good week! Kisses from Marbella x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Glad to hear your feeling better as well! I am in the same boat, runny nose still but just glad to not have the nauseous feeling anymore! Yummy love homemade chicken noodle soup, will have to check it out. Have a great week as well!

Love this Women’s/Men’s day concept - Iceland is so new age and old school at the same time, I love it.

The Skyr thing is funny. Germany has something similar with quark, I can’t figure out quite what it is but you bet it’s in every fridge.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is a perfect way to describe Iceland! How funny, it is just how I find skyr, its in ever fridge yet I can’t quite figure out the best way to describe it.

Sounds like a great weekend. Glad you are feeling better. I have never heard of skyr before - will have to try it when I visit Iceland!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much. Yes definitely, and you won’t have a problem finding it anywhere thats for sure!

Love that street art. So cool!

Your breakfast and dinner photos are making me hungry.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I feel like street art is taking over downtown Reykjavik but its so pretty.

I work myself up too sometimes going to parties where I won’t know people, but it always works out and I even end up making friends. Sounds like you’ve got a fun week ahead too!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I wish I could keep a bit more calm but can’t help but work myself up a bit. Thanks, hope your have a great week!

We had Men’s Day on Sunday here! (We’ve got International Women’s Day on 8th March.) Your hair always looks so good — what is its natural… setting?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I have never heard of mens day until I came here but I love that each gender gets their own day! Haha, I have a hair crew follow me around to fix it after all the crazy Icelandic wind touches it.

  • http://bitsofdays.com/ Zia @ Bits of Days

Lol… Figuring out an artwork is also not my cup of tea… For me some of them are beautiful, and that’s all I know haha. About skyr, how different is it with greek yoghurt?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I agree, some art I think is beautiful the rest just confuses me. It is thicker than greek yogurt and has way less sugar. The taste is just something on its own but I love it.

Uhm… I am OBSESSED with Scandal! I’m almost done with season 2!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Seriously, I was about to start re-watching the seasons since I missed it so much!

  • http://www.jadeoak.com/ jackie jade

oooh i love the idea of women’s day! and skyr sounds pretty yummy!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am hooked on skyr, I crave it when I am not in Iceland, good thing it is healthy!

  • http://thegreatzambini.com The Great Zambini

That’s all pretty awesome, I love the ad oscar’s idea! :) Skyr sounds interesting, but what would you do with all of it? Is it always eaten as is, or is it incorporated into other foods?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

They use skyr for everything! Just eating it plain, in smoothies, to cook with, mixed as a sauce, basically any way you could think of!

SCANDAL!! my newest obsession. i’m near the end of season 2 and i have to slow myself down because i don’t want to get to season 3 too fast!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am hooked! I went through the first two seasons so fast, good for you for having some self control! The third season is amazing so your in for a treat!
