A Rambling of Thoughts

This has been one busy week and I am so ready for the weekend! I stared my Icelandic classes on Monday and am now on level two woo hoo. You can now find me every morning scrunching my face in concentration trying to follow along with what the teacher is saying, which is of course all in Icelandic. It is such a challenging class but I know I am going to learn so much from it, I may even be able to carry on a conversation with a 4 year old by the time my class is done.

On top of trying to comprehend all the Icelandic I am learning I have been spending my days writing the always fun cover letters and preparing contact lists of places I want to send my resumes to. My brain feels ready to explode with all the information it is trying to process so what better way to get rid of some of my thoughts than share them here with you all.

Enjoy the random cluster of my thoughts and happenings from this week, you know all stuff that has occurred when I should’ve been focusing on my Icelandic studies or job search, oh well there is always next week right :)

*When the sun finally does shine it reminds me just how beautiful Iceland really is. This picture was from my run yesterday, I was so glad to get out and run by the sea instead of the treadmill.
Iceland Ocean

*My skin has officially reached glow in the dark status, like I need to start using self-tanning lotion asap or I may start scaring people when I wear shorts to the gym.

*The hot pools in Iceland are the best place to go to solve your life problems. Something in the water just clears things up for you and brings you the solutions, at least thats what Icelanders think.

*Mass postcard mailing occurred this week, only took me a month to send them.
Post Cards

*To the guy in spinning class this week, spinning so fast you make the bike jump around everywhere does not attract us females, nor do we appreciate the constant gawking during class, were trying to get our sweat on dude!

*I have decided there are absolutely no rules when parking on the streets in Reykjavik. Up on the sidewalk, sticking out into the street or cars parked in either direction, it is all fair game.Iceland Parking

*After three months I finally opened up a bank account here in Iceland. Such a simple task but I felt like a badass accomplishing the quest without H. Its the little things in life.

*A sign often outside a very popular cafe downtown, Iceland is pretty awesome…Cafe poster

*I have discovered my best ideas come to me when I am half asleep and to tired to get out of bed to write them down. Note to self, I really must keep a notebook near my bed.

*Icelanders bring Florida to them with a DIY orange tree, totally normal Icelandic orange tree*Learning a new language makes me incredibly hungry. I like to think all that extra work my brain is doing is burning calories so its totally okay to have two lunches.

*I want to meet the person that rides this bike around during the Icelandic winter. You are one brave person to face the winds and cold on this thing!

Iceland Motor Bike

*I am going to my first expat pub quiz tonight, am I suppose to study for this thing??

*The always cute Azora was sure to send me some encouraging snaps this weekAzora
She is just so cute I can’t get enough of her :) Thats all for my ramblings today, I am off to translate my homework so I can figure out what I am suppose to be doing! See you all tomorrow with my recap on my third month in Iceland!

Question of the Day?

And I thought my French classes were difficult… I can’t imagine sitting in a class where the teacher is speaking Icelandic! Although I’m sure you’re used to hearing it now :) How long will you take the classes? I was given 300 hours, roughly 4 months to complete, I’m halfway there!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Each “level” of classes is about 60 hours, so three hours a day four times a week for 4 weeks. I took level one in November where the teacher does speak english but level two is such a huge jump ahead with no english at all! It takes me awhile to ask the teacher questions and to understand her answers! Awesome job keep up the good work! Studying another language is so hard but such a fun challenge as well!

I have zero idea what Icelandic even sounds like (is it like Norwegian?) so I can only imagine how challenging it is! Is it hard to find a job without being fluent? x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Icelandic is originated from old Norwegian, so a bit like other Scandinavian countries with more grammar and more confusing! They even have a language committee who makes words for new items like computer, and also they have a set list of approved Icelandic names you can name your kids! Everyone is basically fluent in english here, especially the younger generations, so while it will be a bit tough to find a job I hope something will come up!

      • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda

Good luck and I really admire how scary/ challenging it must be! x

Thank you! I think all us expats are some brave and badass people, who else has the courage to do what we do!

wow, that first photo is really beautiful! and I love the babies/boobs sign :) good luck with your classes!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ha isn’t that sign awesome! Thank you, lots of studying headed my way!

the parking, it’s the same in england! doesn’t matter which way you are facing, which is funny because my friend got a ticket in america for parking the wrong way once.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right I just don’t get the parking here! In America it is so strict on which way you park your car, depending on the side of the street and parking tickets are always given out where I am from.

    Love that cafe sign!!

Good luck with the quiz. If they ask who turned down an Oscar in 1972 it was Marlon Brando.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t that cafe sign awesome! Thanks! I would not have been surprised if this question was asked. Our “beer round” question was how many individual games of Candy Crush were played in the first year? Our team was only a 100 billion off!

The parking situation is hilarious, I stared at that picture for 5 minutes like… wait… wtf?!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha right! It is also common for cars to just come up on the sidewalk and park if they can’t find room on the street, and they don’t pay attention to people walking either!

  • http://evamarietaylor.com/ Eva Marie Taylor

That is one pimped out scooter! And I am totally tempted to park like an Icelander at times!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Me to! To bad I would have gotten a big parking ticket back home if I did but here all rules are off.

  • http://tothedayslikethis.blogspot.co.uk/ Sammy Dorn

That cafe sign is gold! Love it! Good luck with your classes. I would love to learn another language and can imagine how challenging it would be.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t that cafe sign awesome, I smile every time I walk pass it! Thank you! It is so challenging to learn another language but when I understand something it makes me so excited to keep learning.

  • http://www.quaintrelleblog.com/ Setarra

Haha! I love that they attached the oranges to the trees! Simply genius. And you’re going to need to do a vlog or something going over your favorite Icelandic phrases (curse words allowed as I always like to learn them first haha) I’m really curious about how the language sounds..

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I will have to get on that vlog! Maybe after a glass or two of wine, just to loosen up my tongue and get it ready to roll all the harsh R’s in the language!

  • http://weiderjl.blogspot.com/ Jenn

    Awww the puppy!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thats what I say every time:)

  • http://focusonthegood.io/ Britney McSweeney

Kiki, love love love the daily snapshot post. happy to see there is a glimmer of sunshine in them, hopefully the thaw starts early this year for you! and I can relate to hoping to be able to talk to even kids after studying for months - languages are hard, just focus on your small victories!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! Totally agree, its amazing how excited you get when you understand something in the language you have been studying for months! Def helps give you some motivation to keep going, the small victories are key!

  • http://www.lifeinprogress.ca/ Kathy@Vodka and Soda

the car parking reminds me of italy! if there’s a spot open - sidewalk, alley or road - you take it. and they triple or quadruple park too. it’s insane!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I remember that when I was in Italy! I couldn’t imagine just parking however I wanted, I would be so worried someone would hit my car! Maybe thats why so many cars around here have dents in them :)

  • http://lavieambrose.blogspot.com/ Alison Doyle

Love this! I really know nothing about Iceland so am loving exploring it through your eyes! Can’t wait to keep reading.

So glad your following along! I am looking forward for more Icelandic adventures this year to share with you all!

  • http://www.cubiclethrowdown.com/ Rika - Cubicle Throwdown

I laughed so hard at the cars. That happens here in the Caribbean too!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha I laugh every time I see the parking jobs! Sometimes they are just up on the sidewalk if they can’t find a spot and I am always like how is this allowed!

  • http://voyageofthemeemee.blogspot.com/ Amanda MeeMee

I’m glow in the dark, too! I hate it but I’m too cheap to pay for a spray tan and don’t want to wreck my skin going in the beds. :/

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Same here, I am way to cheap and care to much about my skin for that shit. Good thing my fellow Icelanders are much whiter than me so next to them I almost look tan.
