Travel Wednesday

Welcome to the first post in a new series on my blog, Travel Wednesday! I am currently working on a travel page and thought that a weekly series would be a fun way to share my past travels stories, some of my must see and do tips, and of course lots of pictures.

Travel Quote3 years ago I had never been to another country. The furthest I had traveled from my home in Oregon was to visit my grandma in Hawaii (I know rough right). At 20 years old I found myself fantasizing about traveling and was determined to find a way to get out and explore the world.

At the time I was a college sophomore so I began looking into different study abroad programs and spent the next year going through the long application process. After a few failed attempts to find a program I finally found an internship in Sydney, Australia. Finally my dream to travel was coming true and I couldn’t have been more excited.

The day I was leaving for Australia was when it started to sink in that I was leaving my home, my comfort zone, and my friends and family. I will never forget how nervous and sad I was when I said my goodbyes to my family at the airport. I remember calling my mom in tears begging her to come back and pick me up, there was no way I was going to Australia. Her response, “Call me when you land in Australia”, and after that she turned her phone off. Thank you mom for giving me the tough love that I needed that day!

After a 17 hour flight where I spent my time throwing up, fainting in the airplane bathroom and having an oxygen mask given to me (did I mention I have an issue with motion sickness and this flight was extremely bumpy) I finally made it to the land down under.

This was where it all started for me and I am so grateful for my three months in Australia. I had so many first time experiences and I came back home a different person with a new outlook on life and a stronger desire to travel more.

While in Australia I worked as a marketing intern in downtown Sydney right by Darling Harbor.

To get to work I had to ride the subway. This was the first time I had ever used the subway system and it took me a few days to get the hang of it. This picture is of me waiting at the train station near our house.I now understand what it feels like to be jammed into a train during the morning rush in the middle of the Australian summer, not so glamorous.

During my time in Australia I lived in student housing with over 100 other international students. It was my first time being surrounding by languages than English, oh and being one of two Americans in housing full of mostly European students.

You can’t go to Australia and not see their famous animals. Yet another first for me, feeding a kangaroo.

No trip to Australia is complete without scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef. A terrifying first for me but I am so glad I conquered my fears and went scuba diving while in Australia.

This new adventure like I said forever changed my life. Here in Australia was the start of my adventure that has brought me to this new life here in Iceland. Yup, Australia is where I met H and our relationship began.

Awww so young and so cute, our first pictures together. If you would have told me during this time that 3 years from now I would be living in Iceland with him I would have thought you were crazy.

Amazing how just one decision can change so many things in your life. My decision to study abroad set me out on a completely different life path than I had imagined. Travel is something I am so grateful for and it is forever shaping my life in amazing ways I never would have dreamed of.

I hope you have enjoyed the start of Travel Wednesday. Next week I will share my list of must dos when living in Australia. I am looking forward to sharing all my travels with you all and of course recapping all the great times I have had.

Question of the Day?
What was the first country you ever traveled to?

Linking up with Nicole and Treasure Tromp!

Great post! What an adventure you had :-)

Ummm.. does Northern Ireland count? My family moved there from England when I was 5 (and back to England when I was 7…).

My first holiday aborad was Rhodes, Greece when I was 11. It was also the last holiday I ever took with my step mum before she died.

    • Thanks so much it sure has been quite the adventure these last three years :) I think yes! I am dying to go to Ireland, hopefully that trip will happen soon. So sorry about your stepmom, I am glad to hear you were able to have a nice holiday with her though and Greece is just amazing!

ooo, you should link your travel posts on Bonnie’s blog, (http://bonnieroseblog.co.uk/2013/12/autumn-country-walk.html) they go live Tuesday’s but I think people check back a few days later (I know I do) and it’s a great way to discover new places to visit. The first time I went properly abroad was probably to Venezuela, but I had been to Mexico before that. I had never even thought to come to Europe really until I met my English boyfriend at Uni after HE did a study abroad. Those study abroaders eh hehe

    • Thanks so much for the tip on Bonnie’s blog! Ha right I never thought I would be living in Europe, study abroad does it to you! Sounds like you story is quite similar to mine, I am loving the blogging community and how many people I am finding that are living lives so similar to mine!

yeah it’s great for that. I think my outlook has become a lot more positive and go with the flow since I started blogging and seeing so many people in the same situations I find myself in. It def makes you feel less alone. Sometimes it feels a bit like a support group haha.

Haha I agree, its like having your own support group always there for you! Perfect description:)

My first trip abroad was to Spain when I was 18. It really started a life-long travel obsession for me.

    • I think that first trip is what reels you in, once you have had a taste your just hooked for life!

Hey there! I’m a new follower on bloglovin. My husband and I went to Australia for our honeymoon, but could only stay for 5 days due to my being a teacher and getting hired at the last minute at a new school. Anyway…that 17 hour flight twice in one week was plenty. :) We live in WA state. I’ve always been fascinated with Iceland, and am even planning a potential stop over there this spring…excited to follow along and learn more about the culture! -Andrea

    • Hi! Thanks so much for following! Woo your braver than me I don’t think I could handle that flight twice in one week but that is awesome that 1 you got to visit Australia even if just for a bit and 2 that you quickly got a teacher job I know how difficult those can be to get so congrats! Love the Pacific Northwest, so nice having a direct flight to Iceland from Seattle as well. Glad you are going to follow along and if you do stop over in Iceland feel free to ask my any questions :)

This is so awesome! I really need to get to Australia someday soon. Kudos to your mom for pushing you out the door — I can imagine my own and many others that would have given into the easy option of keeping your kid home (and “safe”). Looking forward to reading more from the new series!

What a lovely story! I know that feeling of crying when at the airport! When I went to live in Paris, my parents left me and I wanted to cry so hard, which I never expected to feel like that as I am very independent from my parents!

I would love to visit Oz, my brother moved there 8 or so years ago and I’ve not seen him since!

The first country I went to was Spain when I was 11. I’ve been to loads of different countries around Europe, and Tunisia in Africa. I’m going to Florida in May which is super exciting for me!

I know right! I was so independent and hadn’t lived at home in a few years so when I had my airport breakdown I was shocked myself. So glad my parents just left me as well, thank goodness for tough love! Ohh lucky I would love to live back in Australia, have been dreaming of the warm beaches as I deal with the Iceland winter and its darkness. I went to Florida a few years ago you will have a great time!

Hi Kiki, nice finding your blog. This is such a beautiful first post about your travel life. ” I had so many first time experiences and I came back home a different person with a new outlook on life and a stronger desire to travel more.” — I can totally relate to this. Isn’t traveling amazing? The first place I traveled outside of my country (Philippines) was Hong Kong and I knew I wanted to do explore of the world more. I moved to New York after that where I got more opportunities to travel more and more. After each travel I have more appreciation for life and the world. I know it’s something I wouldn’t stop doing until I die. Looking forward to your next series.

Thanks so much for stopping by! It truly is amazing how much travel can change you, I don’t think you even realize it until you take the time to look back and see what you have learned and how you have changed. How exciting all the travel opportunities that have came your way! Best way to live I think is to get to travel! Thanks for the comment and reading, I look forward to sharing more of my stories with you all:)
