A Flood in Venice

Travel Wednesday Venice
Last week I shared our travel miracle when we luckily found H’s debit card that he had left in a store in Venice. After that experience and the stress of walking frantically around those little streets our second day in Venice was much more low key.

We started off our day by heading over to the main part of Venice early in the morning. On the ferry with us were tons of children on their way to school. I couldn’t help but think, wow this is apart of their daily lives, how cool is that!I would love to haven gotten views like this on my way to school.

We had planned to start our day at the Piazza San Marco since we had missed it the day before. When we got off the ferry though we were greeted with a flood.

At first H and I weren’t really sure what to do, but when in doubt follow the crowd so off our shoes went and we continued wandering around barefoot.

I loved the fact that the restaurants didn’t let the water stop them and the waiters just pulled on some rubber boots and went along with their day.

Since the water was taking over most of the area we had planned on exploring we instead decided to spend our day enjoying some drinks along the canals.

We had seen so many people enjoying these fruity looking drinks so we had to order one for ourselves. The drink turned out to be Campari, a very bitter Italian drink that was anything but refreshing! It was nice though to take a quiet break away from all the crowds.

One thing I was a bit disappointed in by Venice was how touristy everything felt. Somehow the beauty of the city was a bit lost to me by the overwhelming tourist traps that seemed to be all over. Taking a break away from the hustle and bustle of the city though was a great way to appreciate Venice and its beauty and was my favorite part of our visit to the city.

Before saying goodbye to Venice that night we had one last walk around the city and finally made it to Piazza San Marco which was no longer flooded. The square was full of life with live bands playing, people walking around enjoying some gelato and entertainers performing their acts, it was a great way to end our time in Venice.

The following morning we left very early to start our journey down to Florence. I fell in love with Florence and can’t wait to share all my photos from my favorite Italian city. Tune in next week!

Question of the Day?
Have you been to Venice? Was it how you expected the city to be?

I had the same feeling in Rome, about how touristy it was . My favourite moments there also ended up not being the sights (which were undisputably amazing of course), but the moments more at rest - stumbling on a small church in an alleyway, or sitting down on a random bench to have pizza from a street vendor.
What an amazing experience to see all of the Italians taking off their shoes during the flood! Looks straight ouf of a movie!

I agree, the simple moments are the most special to me when traveling. I feel like I get a bit lost when I am in the hustle and bustle of it all so its nice to have those quiet moments.

as gorgeous as venice is, the flooding is ridiculous. i think i told you before but it was POURING when we visited venice; as in water up to our knees. but we trudged on and still saw the gorgeous city.

Yes I could only imagine how much more water their was when you were visiting! I think you need a redo on your Venice trip!

I love how no one there is letting a flood get in their way of having a good day! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t it awesome. I loved that all the waiters just put on rubber boots and kept on working.

I’ve been to Venice, but I didn’t have to walk through rivers! haha I loved that city.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha the flood caught me off guard for sure but it made it a bit more special as well. Such a beautiful city.

Love Venice, but never been there when it’s flooded! What a crazy experience!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It was definitely an interesting experience! But such a fun one.

Your photos are absolutely stunning! What program do you use to edit them?! Love, Love, Love Venice…it is one of my favorite cities! I definitely think it is touristy but getting off the beaten path or going to one of the neighboring islands gives you a more authentic feel :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much, nothing fancy I am pretty sure if there is any editing on these photos it is just instagram. Venice I think is definitely a place where you need to get off the beaten path to enjoy it more.

Firstly, your photography is incredible! The first and third pictures literally took my breath away! Secondly, how cool that you guys walked around a flooded Venice! I just love the picture of the waiter! Thirdly, I agree - overly touristy and tourist trap ridden cities really ruin my love for a place. It’s such a shame! Can’t wait to read your Florence adventures!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much Carly! I loved the waiters wearing rubber boots!

I can’t believe the floods! I know I’ve seen pics of floods before, but still that is crazy! Also, when you want a taste of venice, you can makes those drinks with prosecco and aperol (aperol is the same color and all, just a little less bitter than campari!) It’s our favorite weekend cocktail! (Plus, your photography is so impressive!!)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much. And that drink sounds much better than the one I had!

I agree that Venice can seem overwhelmingly touristy. It’s the irony of wanting to visit, I guess. Everybody wants to see it! When the Piazza was flooded while we were there they laid out raised walk ways. It was freezing cold so the option to wade barefoot would have been horrible, but your sunny day of paddling looks much nicer!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh I could imagine it would not have been fun to walk around in the water when it was cold out. They had some raised pathways but they were so overcrowded that most people just chose to walk around instead.

I can imagine the flood being really refreshing! It must be awesome to go sightseeing and taking pictures while you stand barefooted in the water :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It made it a really memorable experience for sure!

oh man, I hated the campari! I never knew it flooded in the summer, I thought it was just in the winter.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh wasn’t the campari so gross! It looked so nice and refreshing. We were there in September, maybe it starts in the fall time, I had no idea about the floods so it was interesting to see.

I’ll be spending a day in Venice later this month. I am really looking forward to it even though it probably will be very crowded and touristy.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Your going to love it! And maybe it won’t be to crowded yet since its early in the tourism season:)

I’ve heard that Venice has become commercialized and it makes me sad :( I loved Florence too and can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is a great way to explain Venice, that is has become commercialized. I loved Florence, can’t wait to recap and go through all my pictures.
