When Your Adventure Is Rained Out // Life Lately

This past weekend the Viking and I had big plans, it involved his new camera and black sand beaches. Sounds dreamy right? Don’t be confused, the black sand beach that we planned on visiting would not require a bathing suit, instead it is more of a bring a parka kinda beach, but still it was going to be a fun day at the beach.

That is until a rain storm arrived on Saturday morning and changed our weekend adventure plans. Rain in Iceland, this is nothing new, but when you mix the rain in with the Icelandic wind, well no adventuring is fun out in that mess.

Nothing like a little bit of rain to clear out a beach am I right.

So our weekend adventure, it was a bit of a fail, but that is just how it goes sometimes. Instead of continuing on our adventure in the rain we came home and I took a two hour nap, it was glorious. While my nap was amazing my post idea for today sharing the area we were attempting to explore kinda went out the window, that post will just have to wait for a less stormy day.

Instead, how about a little ramble of a post to fill you guys in on some life happens around here lately?! Pictures of our failed weekend adventure included, even on a stormy day Iceland is beautiful.

Marathon Training | In less than two weeks I will be running the NYC marathon. Ahhh all the feelings, I am excited, nervous, stressed, anxious all at once when I think of this race. Once thing I can’t wait for to be done though, the training. The training for this marathon, it has been rough, mentally, physically, emotional, just rough.

Last weekend I did my last long run, 20 miles in the rain and wind, and I will fully admit I cried that last mile. I was just so done and tired of running hours in terrible weather. For two months every Saturday has involved a two plus hour run, and every Saturday at some point on these runs a rain storm hits. It has been challenging to say the least.

But, I am so close to getting to cross the NYC marathon off my bucket list, so very close I can just picture that finish line! And, if anything, at least all that crazy weather has prepared me for anything on race day. Now, my next concern, figuring out the NYC subway so I can make it to the ferry terminal on time for the ferry to take me to the start line on Staten Island!

DC/NYC Recommendations???| Before H and I head to NYC we will be spending two days in DC. To be honest I think we are both more excited about DC than NYC, it is a place we both have always wanted to visit. Sadly we only have two days in DC, I already know I am going to want more time there! So dear readers, any recommendation on what must dos and eats the Viking and I should do during our short stay in DC we would love to hear?? And if you have some NYC recommendations I would love to hear those too!

The Viking’s Birthday Trip | I haven’t mentioned this here on the blog yet but this past summer I surprised H with a skydiving trip for his birthday. Well, long story short the skydiving never happened after the company fell through several times.

It was really disappointing but I tried to redeem my gift plan when we were in Prague. Well guess what, that plan, and two other plans I had for H’s birthday fell through, so basically all my “adventure gifts” (H and I are big fans of giving gifts of experiences not things, which is why for his birthday I was trying and failing to plan thee adventure gifts) I got him were a big fail, awesome.

But, I now have a successful plan, you know four months later but who is counting. We are going to Scotland!

Originally H and I talked about going to Scotland last year for his birthday (his birthday is in June) but it never happened. So, this May, almost a year later ( better late than never right?) we will heading to Scotland to finally celebrate H’s birthday, just a few weeks before his next one ha. Both of us have Scotland high on our travel bucket list and are super excited about the trip, something to look forward to during the long winter we are about to endure!

Icelandic | Now that I have been in Iceland for two years I am starting to feel really guilty about my lack of Icelandic skills. I am quite proud of myself for how much of a conversation I can follow, but I really need to step up my game of actually speaking Icelandic. The problem is, I have little motivation to actually practice. When I come home from work the idea of going to study Icelandic, well it just sounds as appealing as doing laundry. I really need to find a way to make learning Icelandic not feel like a chore at the end of the day. Any tips from my fellow language learners?

Staying Connected With Loved Ones Back Home | The other day I read this post from Belinda with 7 tips for new expats. One of her tips was on how to stay connected with those back home while balancing a new life abroad. This point really hit home with me, even though I have been an expat for two years, I feel like this is something I wished I would have done differently when I first moved to Iceland.

Those first few months in Iceland were full of new changes and challenges. I was so focused on making a new life in Iceland that I know I didn’t put in as much of an effort to stay in touch with my loved ones back home. This happens from time to time, life changes and gets busy, people drift apart, its all part of life.

But now that I am more settled into life in Iceland I want to focus on taking the time to connect with those I love back at home. It always makes me so happy to talk to them, I need to make it a priority to do it more even if the different time zones make it hard. To my fellow expats, how do you stay connected with those back home?

The Blacklist| I may be a bit late to the game on this show on Netflix but oh my goodness I am hooked! It has been a long time since I have watched a show that held my attention the entire time. With Blacklist I think half the time my mouth is open in shock, I just love the fast pace of the show. If you are in need of a new show to binge watch on a rainy weekend checkout The Blacklist, H and I are hooked!

In other Kaelene news, this past weekend I was trying to run up the sand to get out of the wind quickly, it wasn’t graceful.

H loves capturing me at my best.

Two Year Expativersary Celebrations | Even though our weekend adventure was a fail there has been lots of celebrating around here for my two year exaptiversary. From pretty flowers from my Viking to fun dinners out it has been a week full of celebrating. I encourage all my fellow expats to celebrate their exativersary’s no matter how many years you have been living abroad. It is such a good time to reflect back on how you have grown, H and I have been sharing stories about it all week and I am amazed and proud of myself for all the ways I have grown since moving here two years ago.

One thing is certain, us expats, we are pretty awesome, and I encourage everyone pondering a move abroad to take the jump, it will be hard, but it will be worth it!

Other life happenings, work has been crazy busy, the days are quickly getting shorter (the sun isn’t rising until after 8am now!) and I am already writing out my shopping list for our trip to the states next week, it mostly involves seasonal food items I need pumpkin in my life!

That is all from Iceland, maybe next weekend our adventure won’t get rained out, or snowed out, in Iceland you never know!

Question of the Day?
What is happening in your life lately? Have you ever had a trip affected by the weather?

I totally understand in regards to language learning. I’m living in Japan, for the second time (once for a year and a half 8 years ago) and my motivation to seriously learn the language is not good. I have taken lessons on and off for 8 years, and my listening is ok, but speaking…. basically I need a lot of booze to get up the courage and i’m still no good. It doesn’t help that I don’t use Japanese at work at all.

I’m so jealous you get to live in Iceland! it’s on my bucket list to visit!

Same here! Give me a glass of wine and it is no problem for me to start speaking Icelandic ha. I don’t use it at work either so it makes it hard for me to practice on a daily basis.

I love this little update, girl! GOOD LUCK in the marathon! I think you’re going to do amazing! <3
Scotland will be so much fun!

Thanks so much Rachael! I am so nervous and excited for the marathon!

Those fall in Iceland photos are so beautiful - I can’t believe that even the GRASS is turning yellow and orange. Unreal!! Good to be flexible (like you were) when a day’s plan doesn’t work out.
As for as language learning, it’s tough…. it is definitely a hobby for me so it’s hard to put myself in the shoes of someone who it might be a chore for. But! Perhaps set aside a small amount of time (even 20 minutes every day, at the same time so you get into a routine) just to study a little and envision your end goal in your mind. I hope you find that helpful!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Right! The grass here is just amazing with all of the colors. I wish I enjoyed language learning, but I think you are right, setting aside just a bit of time each day is a good idea, thanks for the tips!

  • http://www.heartmybackpack.com/ Silvia

Hahaha I brought four cans of pumpkin with my back from the U.S. because it’s so expensive here! I love random updates like this, and oh my goodness, I am so jealous of your fitness - you are going to kill it in the marathon!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am def about to bring back pumpkin from the states, it really is so expensive here!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

I hope you get some pumpkin sometime soon! :D xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Is pumpkin expensive in the stores in London? Here it can be around 4-5 dollars just for a small can when you can find them!

      • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

Can you find any pumpkins there at all? If so, you can roast them and easily make your own pumpkin puree without a blender, tastes the same as pumpkin from a can :) Highly recommend!

      • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

It’s about £2 per can. So expensive when you convert it to dollars, but about the same price £-wise as a jar of a nice spaghetti sauce or something. So not too over-priced. :) x

I love DC! My favorite place (strange as it may sound) is Arlington Cemetery, because there is so much history there and it’s so peaceful.

I am using the Memrise app to work on my Icelandic vocabulary, but that’s probably not going to help directly with speaking. But you can make your own list of words that you think will be helpful or that you’re having trouble memorizing and the app will remind you periodically to go over them again to make sure they move into your long-term memory.

Scotland was really beuatiful, although it’s been quite some time since I visited. I loved the castle ruins, the Isle of Skye, Glencoe and Culloden Battlefield, again for all the history and the wildness of the landscape (although you have plenty of that in Iceland…). The further North we went, the more ancient the landscape looked.

Good luck with the NYC marathon, let us know how it went! :-)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much for the tips! I will have to check out the Memrise app I haven’t heard of it before, sounds like it will be helpful! Are you living in Iceland?

I can’t wait to visit Scotland, your trips sound awesome I will have to add those to our list.

Thanks Kim! I will definitely share how the marathon goes, good or bad:)

      • Kim Thiemann

No, I’ve just been seriously hooked since my first visit this February and have started learning Icelandic since. I went back once so far a few weeks ago and have two more trips planned for 2016. You are probably lightyears ahead of me language-wise, but I tried communicating a bit three weeks ago and loved the Icelanders’ reaction to my trying to speak their language. The owner of the horse farm literally hugged me everytime I said something in Icelandic :-)

Memrise has some ready-made Icelandic courses by other users, but those are probably too easy for you. Howevever, I find it helpful to make my own lists with words or phrases I need in a specific context of with words I am having trouble with. Then I just try to review the ones the app reminds me off every day and learn a few new ones. It only takes a few minutes each day, but they add up over time.

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

How awesome! This is great to hear, good for you! i always love hearing from other fellow Iceland lovers:) Gangi þér vel!

In DC I would definitely recommend walking around Georgetown and getting a cupcake from GTown Cupcakes. Also, I love the Natural History Museum (Smithsonian) and last time I was there they had a small Iceland exhibit, I don’t know if it’s still there but I think you’d enjoy it. I would definitely take advantage of all the free things to do. My favorite Monument is the World War 2 Monument. Also, I know it’s expensive but if you purchase it on Cyber Monday or Black Friday, you can get a good deal - Rosetta Stone. Honestly, it’s one of the best purchases you could make and totally worth the money. I have never had such an easy time with my German skills. I started from the beginning even though I still remembered some German from High School and it made a huge difference.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks for all the tips Jenn! I definitely want to check out Georgetown! I am not sure if Rosetta Stone has Icelandic, I will have to check it out, but since Icelandic isn’t really a language people often want to learn it is hard to find programs teaching it. I will check it out though thanks Jenn!

Go to Mari Vanna or the Russian House in DC for some super awesome Russian stuff! (Mari Vanna has great food & the Russian House has great drinks PLUS I met Ovechkin there before!)

  • http://www.SamanthaAngell.com/ Samantha Angell

I’m also in love with Blacklist! As far as Icelandic tips and learning to speak it…my best moments came when I was able to do something simple, i.e. grocery shopping, and not speak a word of English! Give yourself small challenges like this. I was very self-conscious too about speaking, so I’d try have conversations with my hubby first so that I got my self consciousness out of the way. A great time for you to practice Icelandic will be on your upcoming trip to DC & NYC- you and H can speak in Icelandic and nobody will know WHAT you are saying. Makes it super fun!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Blacklist is so good! I just want to sit and watch it all day ha. Yes, those simple tasks always feel like I am winning when I can manage without any English! Did you learn quite a bit of Swedish? I actually have a hard time practicing with H, I think because he is a native speaker he picks out all the little errors when I just want to speak it and get it out ha. But it is fun when we can talk and nobody knows what we are saying:)

      • http://www.SamanthaAngell.com/ Samantha Angell

I learned more than I thought I would. I understand just about everything, and can speak OK. I hear you about the difficulties of learning with him- Nick is fluent (although not native) so he picked out all my little errors at first. Then I told him he can tell me if I’m doing something MAJORLY wrong, but I’ll never start speaking it consistently if I’m worried about mistakes! That helped him to only point out the major things.

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ya same here, I can understand just about everything, and at least the gist of all conversations, and often I know how to say the things I want to but then get caught up on the grammar cases and how to properly build the sentence, Icelandic grammar is just ridiculously confusing ha. I will have to try this out with H, it also doesn’t help that when he does pick out points I get irritated ha but still we keep trying and it can be fun:) H actually lived several years in Sweden and is fluent in Swedish, I personally would much rather learn Swedish and have an easier time understanding the words when I hear it, maybe one day we will end up in Sweden:)

two hour naps are necessary sometimes. I took a 3 hour nap yesterday… whoops! so exciting about the marathon!

connecting with family and friends far away is so tough!! i’m having a rough time even being hours away

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Seriously, naps are just the best, I think it needs to be apart of my daily life!

Ugh, staying in touch is so hard! I was just so used to seeing my family and friends all the time and now that I have figure out a time we both are free to talk it makes it so hard. But those talks, they are just the best.

  • Denise

Congrats on all the hard work marathon training- lots of luck when you run the race! Super exciting that you are headed to DC first- I actually live there and would be happy to send you an email with ideas- there is a lot to do in this city! As for if I’ve had a trip affected by weather, it was Iceland for me a few weeks ago! I had pictured a glorious day hiking in Porskmork and when I woke up it was gloomy and rainy and better spent cozy inside :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Denise! Do you have any must eat places in DC? Ugh, that darn Icelandic weather, I think it does that for many. I feel lucky that I get to be here for those nice days mixed in with all the stormy ones.

  • http://confuzzledom.wordpress.com/ bevchen

Scotland! I LOVE SCOTLAND! You’re so lucky - I wish I was going there in the near future.

We are so excited! Any must see places you recommend for Scotland?

  • http://movebyyourself.com Kelley @ Move By Yourself

When I was Peace Corps volunteer my mom would always send me cans of pumpkin around Thanksgiving so I could make a pumpkin pie :)

There are so many good restaurants here in DC, you definitely won’t be hard pressed to find good food. One of my favorite Museums is the ‘Newseum’ — its not free like most of the museums in DC but it is so interesting! It goes through all these historical events through the context of News and Media. Definitely worth the money.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! Pumpkin is a great thing to add to a care package! I can’t wait for our trip to DC; thanks for the tip Kelley!

  • http://snowintromso.com/ Van @ Snow in Tromso

What really helped me learning Swedish at that time I wasn’t enrolled in a course but self-learning at home, was to set a certain time and day of the week aside to learn and stick to it. That’s also how I’m able to do a second Bachelors next to my Masters: every Friday morning I do the stuff that is needed for my Bachelors and when I’m done, I’m so happy and even more grateful for the weekend ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Learning new languages, studying two different programs, you are a rockstar! That is a good idea though, I think just having a time scheduled to dedicate to studying Icelandic is how I will have to do it, otherwise I will never do it!

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

SCOTLAND?! I want to cry I am so jealous!!! Oh man, you are going to completely kill it at the NYC marathon because of how hard training is in Iceland, I imagine, anyway! Girl you are tough running in that windy weather! I would have made best friends with my treadmill. I’ve been to DC a few times and NYC only once, but if you are into museums, KC and I are huge fans of the Smithsonians. The pictures of you running up the sand are hilarious.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am so excited! I remember when I was little my aunt took a trip to Europe visiting all over and when she came home she told me her favorite place was Scotland, ever since then it has been my dream to visit. And ugh, I know I just hate the treadmill so much but if I was having to train any longer that was were I was headed! Thanks for the DC recommendation!

Hey there, been following your blog since going through Iceland withdrawal after my trip and figured the DC mention is cause for coming out of the lurker closet! Restaurant wise, I’d recommend Le Diplomate which is the “hottest” restaurant, really tasty French food. Not knowing your budget, its pretty expensive. You definitely need a reservation if you want to go. Tasty brunch too which is more reasonably priced. Le Diplomate is on 14th street which has all the fun bars etc, and has my other restaurant recommendation which is Tico. Tasty spanish/mexican tapas/cocktails/fun atmosphere. Ben’s Chili Bowl is a DC institution and great drunk food (hey we all need it sometimes). And you guys can compare it to the pylsur ;)

Georgetown is “cute” but not much else. Its fine for shopping but the restaurants suck. Unless you’re desperate to stand outside waiting for 30 minutes for an average cupcake at Georgetown Cupcake, you wouldn’t miss out if you skipped it. You can get canoes/paddleboats on the water though.

The zoo is one place I always take visitors, especially if its still warm by the time you get here. It holds up against any other zoo I’ve been to, is free, in a good area for other stuff, etc. My boyfriend always recommends doing the monuments at dusk or night as they’re less crowded and you can get some pretty neat shots of them. But yeah if you both haven’t been here, you can easily fill up your time at the monuments. Oh and the best museum is the Portrait Gallery! Check that out if you are museum-inclined.

That was really long but hope it helps! Let me know what kind of food you guys like if you want other restaurant tips, DC has tons of options. And feel free to ask any other questions too. Love your blog btw, keep it up!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Hey!

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I have been recommend Tico a few times now so I think that is definitely a place we will have to check out. I can’t wait to go and explore! Thank you for reading along, so glad you enjoy! What is your favorite place in Iceland? I love hearing from other Iceland lovers! :)

Omg, everything is NYC is worth doing. Times square is a must, so is the Statue of Liberty. As for DC, I can’t help I have never been. You can do Leslie’s Park and Rec Tour, lol. And I have had more disadventures than adventures in Slovenia, such is my luck haha but it is worth it even if I just take glimpses of it. Like these black sand beaches, amazing! Good luck on your marathon and hope you have an amazing time in Scotland!!

Bravo for tackling Icelandic! I remember seeing the signs there and thinking “how could anyone pronounce that?!” When I study languages, I try to incorporate learning into my life e.g. reading books, listening to podcasts while I commute. That way, you get some studying done during the day and it doesn’t turn into a chore for the end of the day. Hope this helps!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you Audrey! Great tips! I need to be better about listening to Icelandic music, that always helps me when I am good about listening to it, makes the pronouncing of the words seem a bit easier when they are being sang for some reason ha.

I know what you mean about trying to learn another language! It’s really hard for me to find the time to learn Chinese. In my free time, I’d much rather go on some sort of adventure.

a bummer your weekend fell through, but it still looks gorgeous :) oh, and Scotland! I am so jealous. I can’t believe the marathon is coming up so quickly - you’ll have an amazing race I’m sure. it’s been about 7 years since I was there when my Dad ran it, but if you still start on Staten Island you should probably take the ferry over since the subway doesn’t go there ;) my favorite fall saturdays in NY I would walk through Central Park and visit the Met. the High Line is pretty cool and I would recommend Top of the Rock instead of Empire State if you’re planning a skyline view.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Its a taco filled with probably 75 grasshoppers but its actually really good and awesome to say you’ve eaten it! We have only been once and our friend from DC took us there. wow you’ve been busy - great job with the marathon training and best of luck. i hate running, so doing it in cold and rainy weather sounds like the worst haha. and enjoy your upcoming time in DC and NYC - I love both places but am drawing a blank on specific recommendations for you!

You’re so awesome! That marathon sounds great, and you’re going to do so well! As for DC recommendations, I think you’ve seen it already, but I have a DC city guide here:

Some of my favorite places ever are on that list, but if I could recommend just one place for dinner, it would be Lebanese Taverna. It’s soooooo good! Also, if you’re looking for something to do during the day and have already seen all the monuments, check out the Newseum. It’s my favorite museum and totally worth the money.

Also, your travel plans sound so amazingggggg! Eeeee!

Thanks so much Amanda! I am definitely going to be using your DC guide for some tips!

Wow so many great things coming up! Props to you for running a marathon and especially for training in the Icelandic weather! Blacklist happens to be one of my favorite shows and watching it on Netflix is just dangerous! You don’t even have to go out of your way to watch another, it just starts automatically!

Sorry your trip got rained out, if it helps your pictures are still beautiful! Hopefully the weather over here in NY will hold up for you! If you’re into brunch, definitely get some in NYC! Maybe after your marathon to celebrate (most of them are pretty heavy).. Root and Bone in the East Village is reallllly good- they’re known for their deviled eggs and fried chicken and waffles :D

A brunch celebration sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip Lauren!

The Highline is absolutely gorgeous right now (and a great place to watch the sun set over the Hudson!) and BEA on 43rd St is one of my favorite restaurants - call ahead and get a table in the atrium if you can, so cool! Good luck with the race and enjoy your travels! Super jealous of those Scotland plans :)

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I am so excited for our trip, and for Scotland too :)

I don’t know if this is too late but if you can book into AIRE Ancient Baths the day after the marathon, DO IT. It was the most amazing thing I did after my first (and only) NYCM in 2013. The different temperature baths will help your legs so much the next day. GOOD LUCK! I’m so excited for you! Such an amazing course and city!
I feel like I’m like you with the language, I’ve been in Munich for nearly 6 months and I know a handful of food words and that’s pretty much it. I’m so bad. When we get back to Australia I want to enrol in some German classes so that hopefully we make it back here and I know what the hell is going on haha!! If you find a way to learn by yourself please let me know…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That sounds amazing! I can’t wait for the race, even though I am super nervous!

If I figure out a way to learn on my own I will definitely let you know! Good luck with your German!

Ah y’all will love Scotland! For D.C. I recommend Founding Farmers for breakfast (delicious + 10 minute walk from the White House) and Good Stuff Eatery for burgers + milkshakes, all that good American stuff ;) The Georgetown area is so adorable if you have time to scoot over there, but you could spend weeks going through all the museums and monuments!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think Founding Farmers is definitely going to have to happen for breakfast, I think everyone has recommend it!

This post hits home for me right now because we had an amazing outdoorsy adventurous day planned for tomorrow…and then the weather struck. In our case, it’s sudden and unusually extremely high air pollution. Grrr. I so don’t want to stay indoors.
Wish you all the best in continued efforts toward learning Icelandic. I know motivation is hard, especially with speaking for me too. I can understand nearly everything I hear or read in Spanish, but when I try to talk, it’s ridiculous, because thinking about which verb ending to add is a totally different than just understanding verbs in context when you hear/read them.
