2015 Reading Goal Accomplished!

Winter is in full swing here in Reykjavik (and I can’t stop taking picture of all the snow!) and all I want to do is two things. One, walk around playing in the winter wonderland the city has become. Two, lay on the couch curled up in my favorite blanket reading.

Winter is the perfect time to get some reading in, I already have a list of books I want to tackle over Christmas holiday. And, the winter weather is a good excuse to finish up those reading goals you may have for the year! Speaking of reading goals, I have an update from my reading goal I made as apart of my goals for 2015.

I have completed my goal of reading 50 books with almost a month to spare!

When I made this goal last January I really wanted to use this goal as a way to get back into the habit of reading at night instead of watching tv. I have always loved reading but somewhere after college and all those textbooks I had to read I stopped reading for myself. What better way than a challenge to get back into the swing of things with reading?! I am so glad I made this goal, it helped me make reading a priority, and it gave me a good excuse to jump into bed a bit earlier to read which easily is my favorite time of the day!

During this past year I have read some wonderful books that I can’t stop raving about. These books are ones that I probably never would of chosen if I wasn’t trying to find 50 to read. To keep me accountable for my reading goal I have been sharing the books I have read along the way (you can find my book recaps here and here). Now that my goal is met I have one last book round up and I can officially mark my reading goal off my 2015 bucket list.

This last round up for the year, I have to admit it wasn’t my favorite batch of books. Work and life has been really busy lately and I found myself going for more of those lighter easy reads that I can’t say I would recommend, but they were perfect for the time. If you are looking for some new books to curl up with this winter check out the list below!

———–

The Wronged Sons by John Marrs - ★★★★ - Catherine’s husband, Simon, disappears without a trace and she is left to pick up the pieces of her falling apart family. Fast forward 25 years later and Simon shows up at Catherine’s front door with a story to explain the last 25 years. The book jumps between the time of Simon’s disappearance and his return 25 years later, leaving you guessing the entire time what the reason was why he left. I love a good mystery but more often than not I find that you solve the mystery way before the ending. This book though, I had no idea what to expect and it kept me guessing until the end!

The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness - ★★★★ - The last book in the All Souls Trilogy, I really loved this series! Book number three wasn’t my favorite book in the series but it was a story that I could get completely lost in. “Equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense” Goodreads describes this series perfectly with that statement! Add this series to your list and enjoy getting lost in the magical world of witches and vampires this winter.

The Magician by Lev Grossman - ★★★★ - I found this book on a book list with the description, “adult books for those who loved Harry Potter,” so ya in case you didn’t know I love reading books about magical worlds! From Goodreads, “An enthralling coming-of-age tale about magic practiced in the real world-where good and evil aren’t black and white, and power comes at a terrible price.” I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown - ★★★ - This book isn’t one that I would normally pick up, but something about it intrigued me. The story of the American rowing team on their quest for gold in the 1936 Olympics completely sucked me in. Following the lives of the boys on the rowing team with chapters mixed in from what was occurring in Germany under Hitler this story is one I would definitely recommend to a friend. One thing I couldn’t help thinking throughout the entire book, kids today, we have it so good, the children in this time period, they worked hard for everything!

The Hypnotist’s Love Story by Liane Moriarty - ★★★ - Imagine meeting a great guy and the discovering that he comes with some baggage, as in a stalker ex-girlfriend. I found this twist in the story so interesting, especially reading the story from the stalker’s point of view. I really enjoy Liane Moriarty books and have read almost all of them now. I find her stories are all quite similar, but they are still such fun reads and I always find the characters really easy to relate to. If you are looking for a love story with a twist add this to your list.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - ★★★ - “A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.” When I read this description on Goodreads the fan fiction thing didn’t have me sold on the book, but so many people had been raving about it that I figured I should give it a shot. Nope, I was right, not for me, I ending up skimming over a good chunk of the book when it switched to the “fan fiction” stories. Even though I didn’t really like the book I found myself really relating to the parts about moving away to college, making new friends and stepping out on your own. So this book, it wasn’t a total waste of time for me, and I think it is a good book, just not for me.

Sushi for Beginners by Lisa Edwards - ★★★ - For all my e-readers out there, do you ever just missing holding a real book? I know I do and that is really the only reason I picked this one up when I found it in our office bookshelf. A “The Devil Wears Prada” type of story about life at a fashion magazine and the mean scary boss versus the nice girl, this book is an easy read, and completely silly at times, but I found myself really enjoying it and it was the perfect book to end a busy day with.

Summer Sisters by Judy Blume - ★★ - A story about childhood best friends who spend their summers growing up on Martha’s Vineyard this is another one of those stories I picked up since it seemed to be on everyone’s reading list. It is definitely a beach read but something about the story I just didn’t enjoy and couldn’t seem to really get into the story.

Beautiful Broken Rules by Kimberly Lauren - ★ - The first thing I thought when I finished this book, “that was just bad.” A story about college love I just couldn’t get over how ridiculous the plot line was. The story went from two people meeting and falling in love basically overnight, to a super intense and controlling relationship that seemed to involve daily fights and breakups. I don’t know why I kept reading, I think I was really hoping it would get better since I liked the idea of the story, but I can’t say this is one I would recommend.

While I didn’t enjoy many of my past reads I think I am about to end my poor book choices with my upcoming list. Next up is one recommend to me by my cousin that both the Viking and I are about to start, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. Also on my list, the next book in The Magicians series, I can’t wait to start reading it!

I have really enjoyed doing these book recaps and am thinking of continuing on with them. Let me know what you guys think, do you like reading these posts or do you just skip over them???

And, now that I am hooked on reading I need some more suggestions for my winter break reading list?! I am trying to see how many books I can fit in this last month of 2015, and really what else should I be doing during all these snow storms other than reading? :)

Happy Friday everyone! I am looking forward to a snowy weekend with lots of holiday activities! Follow along with what the Viking and I get up to over on Snapchat @kaelene.

Question of the Day?
What is your favorite book? What is on your winter reading list?

I love the snow you’re getting in Reykjavik and are insanely jealous! We hardly get any snow where we are in Germany.

I’m so glad you like the All Souls trilogy. I read them a few years ago and devoured all three books. I’m currently on the hunt to find some more books to load up on my kindle, so thanks for sharing your reviews! I’ll definitely be checking some of them out!

I loved the All Souls trilogy, now I need to find something to replace them! Winter is such a nice time to stay inside and catch up on reading :)

Congrats for reaching your reading goal! I am still struggling to meet mine… probably won’t happen unless I completely convert to books instead of blogs for the rest of the year ;)
EVERYONE in my life is recommending me Boys in the Boat because the rowing team is from UW (my alma mater) and interest of German history…. however i am far more interested in history than sports. Do you think in this case I should still give it a try? Once I tried to read the intro and it was too sports related so I put it down…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Cynthia! It is hard reading both books and blogs all the time! The intro was a bit hard for me to get into but I think you would enjoy it. It does have a lot about the rowing team and their time spent rowing but I found it really interesting.

Congratulations!! :) I just started Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín and I’m absolutely loving it so far! Trying to get it finished before the movie comes out!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you! I love reading the books before the movie comes out, I will have to check out Brooklyn!

  • http://melissaindc.me Melissa in DC

I’m always interested in seeing what other people are reading (and following along on Goodreads), so I vote keep the updates!

Have you read Where’d You Go Bernadette, and/or The Royal We? Those were two books I really enjoyed this year when I ventured outside the Trashy Romance Genre :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Melissa! I really enjoy reading others updates as well so I am glad you enjoy:) I have read Where’d You Go Bernadette and really enjoyed it! I will have to check out The Royal We, thanks for the suggestions!

Keep doing these posts! I love finding new books to read from what other people have thought about them. Plus, 50 books in a year is something to celebrate!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So glad you like reading these posts Sarah! I agree, I always find new books to read from these posts :) What are you reading now?

  • http://lostrightdirection.blogspot.com/ Jenn

YAY! that’s awesome! I’m totally not going to meet my goal this year but that’s ok.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Jenn! As long as we find some good books to enjoy that is all that matters right :)

  • http://www.bookmarklit.net/ Lauren

I had the same issue after college! I thought for sure I would be able to balance reading for pleasure and textbook reading, but it didn’t happen. A year after graduating, I got back into the swing of things! Now I read over 150 books a year and have a book blog to keep it going!

Also - totally agree about FANGIRL! Not for me, even though everyone else seemed to love it.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Wow, 150 books that is impressive! It really was so hard to juggle reading textbooks and books for pleasure in college, so glad I have reignited my love for reading though, it is the best way to relax!

What are your favorite books you have read this year?

  • http://www.intherightplaces.com Aimee

I love reading about what others are reading! I am planning to introduce a Book Club to my blog in the new year, and keep it very casual, by posting a little of my thoughts about the book and hopefully someone else who has read the book can add to the discussion in comments. No deadlines or anything. I wonder if you’ve thought of adding a Book Club to your blog?

I am currently hooked on outdoor adventure books. I am currently reading Into The Wild, and have been getting antsy to read Alive, which has been waiting on my bookshelf for at least a couple years. Something about winter storm hiking books in the winter season… I’m also starting a yearly tradition as soon as I finish Into The Wild. Every year I read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in December.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Me too, it is so fun finding new books from others reviews! A book club sounds so fun, what a good idea to add to your blog :) Love your tradition of reading A Christmas Carol in December!

  • Zoe Keating

That’s incredible! I set out on a similar mission this year - I used to read constantly and then I hit college and completely stopped. Now that I have more time after work, I’ve read 37 books this year. Maybe next year I’ll try for 50. My favorite authors are Barbara Kingsolver, Amy Patchett, and Patrick Rothfuss. Would love to see more book reviews!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Same here! Growing up I always had a book in hand, then once college came I just stopped reading. So glad I made the goal this year now I am booked on reading again:) I will have to check out some of these authors thanks for the recommendations!

Wine and your book, that sounds like a wonderful idea :) Good luck with your goal!

  • http://www.thesiberianamerican.com Olya

Congrats on finishing your goal early! Bummer you didn’t like a lot of the books you read lately. The Wronged Sons looks interesting-I need to add that to my TBR list! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Olya, you are crushing through your impressive goal as well! I really enjoyed the Wronged Sons such an interesting read :)

  • http://mishfish13.com/ Michelle @ Mishfish13

Congratulations on finishing your goal! I also set a 52 book goal this year… but somehow the months slipped away from me. So now I’m left with the task of reading 25 books in a month. Right. That will totally happen!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

For awhile there it looked like I wasn’t going to be anywhere close to my goal so I had to really kick it in gear! But hey at least we are reading right :)

  • Shana

Congratulations on reaching your reading goal early! My suggestions: All They Light We Cannot See, A Man Called Ove, Devil’s Teeth (non-fiction) and Into Thin Air. I am looking forward to more book reviews. I am always looking for some to add to my list.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much! I just downloaded All The Light We Cannot See, can’t wait to start reading it! Thanks for the suggestions!

  • http://www.feastwithsophie.com Sophie

Congrats on 50!! Holy cow. I think I’ve maybe read 15… oops. I’m so keen to read The Hypnotists’s Love Story! You actually got me into Liane Moriarty when you mentioned you were reading The Husband’s Secret… which sent me on a Moriarty binge, but I couldn’t get a hold of this book.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Aren’t her books so good?! I really enjoy them!

  • http://artemishi.blogspot.com Beth

Oh, I am so envious of your snow (and of how gorgeous the city gets in it. Beautiful!).
I highly recommend The Girl with All the Gifts. To everyone. It’s a thriller, but not the traditional serial killer kind or anything, and has a wonderful pace and balance of science and humanity, plus is very character-driven.
I loved Uprooted as well, which is a YA but a mature YA, written by Naomi Novik (of the Temeraire series).
If you’re into historical fiction, The Crown was well laid out and sidestepped a lot of historical fiction tropes I usually encounter. It takes place in medieval England and is from the point of view of….well, she’s a nun but she’s also very much a detective.
The Accidental Highwayman is just plain fun- humor and action, without a ton of depth (which I personally usually need somewhere in the winter).
Of course, anything by Libba Bray (though my standout fav is Going Bovine, with The Diviners a close second) and anything by Patrick Ness.
Broken Monsters was seriously creepy, and I hear Lauren Buekes’ other books are just as good.
Menagerie, by Rachel Vincent, was a favorite of mine AND everyone in my book club.
And I’ll just stop there, because this list could go on for days. :)

Wow - that is a lot of books! I haven’t even achieved my goal of thirty :/ I don’t think that I will now either. The Magician sounds excellent!

I don’t even remember the last time I read this many books! I really enjoyed the Magician!

It is definitely hard to fit time for blogging and reading, too little time in the day!

  • http://adventitiousviolet.com/ Camila @ AdventitiousViolet

Wow 50 books that’s impressive! I’m only at about 24 - though I’m expecting to reach 30 by new year’s since that’s usually all I do over the holidays - but I’ve read some excellent books as well including : How to be a heroine, Quiet, All the Lights We Cannot See, The Rosie Project, The Opposite of Loneliness, the Martian, Shadow of the Wind, Great Gatsby….damn I could go on and on haha. P.S. I’m so surprised you liked The Magicians, I read it last year and hated it so much I had to stop at the weird animal sex orgy rape scene …just not my cup of tea…it’s like HP on drugs lol
