Five Years With The Viking

This weekend, it is going to be one for the books.

First time to NYC.

Running the NYC marathon.

Oh and five years with that Viking of mine.

We have lots to celebrate.

My Viking and I, we have had one heck of a relationship.

From three years of doing the dreadful long distance thing, to traveling around the world together, and now making a life together in Iceland, it has been quite the adventure.

This past year was no different, it has been filled with lots of amazing adventures with my Viking. From Iceland to Oregon, Hawaii to Prague, we have been all over and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Being in an international relationship, it is not easy, but somehow we have managed to make it through all those tearful airport goodbyes, way too many skype talks trying to figure out what to do so we could be in the same country, and now two years of living together in Iceland, and still going strong.

When I look back to when I first met the Viking and all those people who told me our relationship could never work, I can’t help but smile and think, oh but it can.

So in honor of our 5th year together I put together this little list of daily things that go on in our relationship that make it work.

I am the planner, he would rather just go-with-the flow.

He is the optimist, I am the realist.

I do the laundry, he does the dishes.

He is the photographer, I am the writer.

I am type A, he is laid back.

He is the navigator, I sit back and take in the views.

I have the sweet tooth, he craves his chips.

He gives the best creative gifts, I just try and come up with something decent.

I complain about any weather other than sunshine, he can make the best of a blizzard.

He is a night owl, I am a morning person.

I have no patience, he has enough for the both of us.

He has the best sense of humor, I have the giggles often.

As my mom likes to say, “H is good for me.”

I couldn’t agree more, we are good fit:)

Happy anniversary to my Viking. I can’t wait to see what adventures this next year holds.

Question of the Day?
Have you ever been in a long distance relationship? Any NYC date night recommendations?

Awww! Many many congratulations to my favortie International Couple <3 This is just the start for both of you! It's funny how people assume that LDR are not real, but omg how wrong were those people?! The adventure, the challenges, the growth, the grand amazing one of a kind experiences, ahh the list could go on and on. So happy for you guys!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Isabel! It really is funny how people just assume they are not real relationships! Just because we are from places far apart doesn’t mean our love is any different! I love your love story, us international couples, we are the lucky ones! :)

Awww, congratulations, guys! So sweet! <3 Five years of an international relationship is truly incredible. I feel proud of myself for only two, and we've been in the same country almost the whole time. x Congratulations, it's really incredible. And I LOVE NYC! Anything you do there would be fun, I'm sure. I personally love Lincoln Center, you can get orchestra tickets for much less than broadway (and I prefer the music anyway, cuz I'm an old lady), and the area at night is so lovely. xx Have fun!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Sarah! And two years is pretty amazing as well! Thanks so much for the recommendations! We loved NYC!

NYC is one of my favorite topics, and a fantastic place to squeeze in an anniversary celebration!

    Favorite eats:
    http://www.thespottedpig.com/
    http://www.schillersny.com/home.html

    Things to do:
Sleep no more (crazy cross between a haunted house and a play?) you wander around, silently, with a mask on, dig through drawers, follow actors, whatever your heart desires. http://www.sleepnomore.com/#share

    walk the highline

visit the Chelsea market (fun stores, also a load of great restaurants

you can take the staten island fairy for free, great view of the statue of liberty. I did go to Ellis island once and really enjoyed it, but the we stood in line for HOURS (couldn’t visit the island the Statue of Liberty was on at that point, I think you can again, making it more appealing to stand in the super long line.)

There’s a little Japanese bakery near Rockefeller Center that I adore for an interesting snack.

I remember the NBC studio tour being fun.

Times Square really is fun to check out. SO MANY LIGHTS.

If you have time to see a show, you really can get great deals standing in line at the last minute ticket booth.

walking the brooklyn bridge is nice too…. there’s a great pizza place on the Brooklyn side http://www.grimaldis-pizza.com/locations

Fantastic ramen a couple of blocks west of Times Square, Totto Ramen, they’ve got two locations.

I’ll be in Reykjavik next week for Iceland Airwaves, and thanks to your blog, I’m really excited and have tons of ideas of what I need to see!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much for all of these awesome recommendations!!! We loved walking the highline and exploring Chelsea! I hope you have a blast this week at airwaves!

Your lovestory is an inspiration! Whenever I need a positive outlook on expat relationships, I come to your blog. Wishing you a very happy anniversary! Oh, and I highly recommend Serendipity Cafe! You have to try the frozen hot chocolate brownie sunday, it will change your life :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much, I am so happy I can provide a positive outlook on expat relationships, there are so many negative ones out there and they used to discourage me, but expat relationships they can so work!

Just found your blog! love it. =) I recently started my own because I am an expat living in Paris! My husband and I did almost 7 years of long-distance. yikes. We got married in April and moved to Paris in August. And this new apartment in Paris is our first apartment together. finally. for real. =)

Congrats on 5 years! My hubby and I did 2 years long distance and it was pretty darn tough. It really makes you appreciate the other person though, and much more tolerant of their little quirks :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much :) Long distance is definitely really tough but sure does make you appreciate your time together.
