14th Month in Iceland By The Numbers

Month number 14 you were a good one! From hosting my first Thanksgiving dinner to getting into the holiday spirit at many Christmas parties, this past month has been a blur of holiday fun! Ending the month off by arriving back home to spend Christmas with my family has just been the cherry on top. Azora and I have big plans for a nap by the fire so lets get right into my 14th month in Iceland!

30 minutes spent watching the sunset at the Pearl

The Pearl, ReykjavikIt can be a bit rough having the sunset by 3 in the afternoon but I can’t complain about how beautiful the colors of the sunsets are! The viewing deck at the Pearl is the best seat in town to watch the sunset over Reykjavik, a must do when visiting the city.

Two days spent preparing my first Thanksgiving dinner

Thanksgiving in IcelandFrom spending a day searching for all the ingredients I needed to spending the next day cooking the meal Thanksgiving was maybe a bit more than I was prepared for. When it was all said and done and I had recovered from my kitchen meltdown I must say my first Thanksgiving was quite the success. At least H’s family claimed everything delicious, this could be because I had a crazed look in my eye daring them to say anything bad but I am pretty sure it was all absolutely amazing.

Four types of cookies sampled at a cookie exchange

Christmas Cookie ExchangeChristmas cookie exchange parties are the best idea ever! Seriously who ever started the idea you are my hero. This month for our bookclub meeting we decided to turn it into a Christmas cookie exchange and it was a blast. Christmas cookies, wine, books and friends, my kind of girls night!

Several afternoons spent practicing my photography

Iceland PhotographyIceland NatureIceland NatureImproving my photography is a goal of mine for this next year and I am loving having Iceland as my classroom to learn in! The Icelandic nature is the perfect model!

One delicious lunch date at Gló

Glo IcelandIf I could eat at Gló everyday I would! This is my favorite place to grab lunch at while out and about, the plates are always full of pretty colors and the food taste just as good as it looks. H the meat lover is even a big fan of this vegetarian restaurant!

-5°C temperature braved on our winter walk

Iceland winterIceland WinterI couldn’t feel my face but at least it was beautiful! Since it started snowing at the beginning of December it hasn’t stopped and Reykjavik has completely turned into a winter wonderland. Perfect for lots of bundled up afternoon walks!

Dozens of booths explored at the Christmas Market

Christmas Markets IcelandChristmas Markets IcelandChristmas Markets IcelandChristmas Markets IcelandOf course the day we decided to visit the small, but cute, Christmas market in Reykjavik a snow/hail storm had to occur. We tried to tough it out but once the hail started falling down my coat I had to say goodbye to all the little booths and hope for better luck next year.

Three hours waiting for the road to the airport to open

Winter in IcelandAfter months of counting down the days until H and I flew back to the states the day of our flight we woke up to a massive winter storm hitting Iceland. We spent three hours waiting inside the bus station not knowing if we would make it to the airport, if we would make our flights, or even if we would be able to change our flights if needed. Basically it sucked and I am hoping our travels back to Iceland run much smoother.

17 hours of traveling to make it home to my family

Welcome homeEven though the day was terrible the moment I saw my family everything was perfect. I am looking forward to another wonderful week with my family!

Before the long dark days of January set in I am soaking up as much holiday fun as I can! From delicious dinner parties to family events this next month is off to a wonderful start! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

The sun setting at that time is only amazing if you get to watch it happen, when you’re not locked up in an office!!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes very true, I am usually out of the office by then so I am lucky and get to watch the sunset in action most days.

Well, sounds like a pretty great month!
I always thought Iceland was freezing cold, but -5 degrees is actually pretty “normal”.
    Yay for the cookies!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes Iceland sounds colder than it actually is. The winter rarely gets too far below freezing in Reykjavik, thankfully!

What a month! I think this sounds like the busiest of all! I guess it is the holidays and they are always a lot more work than you remember haha.

Hope you had the prefect Christmas you wished for!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

happy 14 months! I can relate with the Thanksgiving day prep-even though we didn’t have to do an entire meal (luckily!) the few things I did sign up to bring, like pumpkin pie, took about a week to finish, just because it took so long to find all of the ingredients! Kudos to making an entire meal to yourself-it looked delicious!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Cooking for Thanksgiving is no joke that is one tough job!

Omg. Discuss was down for a few minutes so I pretty much read this a million times and kept laughing and nodding my head. Yes to it all. Have you ever noticed how much better you speak after a glass or too of wine? Ok maybe that’s an Italian thing! Haha
    (Ok it’s down again)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know I was just waiting for Disqus to get back up as well! But yes! So very true, after a glass or two of wine I think I am basically fluent ha.
