5 Tours You Won’t Want To Miss In Iceland

5 Tours in Iceland One of the most common things I hear people visiting Iceland will be doing is taking the Golden Circle tour, a great option full of wonderful sites. But for those wanting to break away from the crowd and try something truly amazing these 5 tours are for you!

1 | Glacier Hiking

This one time, in Iceland, I hiked across a glacier… who doesn’t want to start a story like that!

Experience Iceland in its raw form and test out your balance skills with a walk across one of the Icelandic glaciers. The scenery alone is worth gearing up for! These tours are suitable for all skill levels so need to sit this one out if you are not an avid glacier hiker! To make sure you get the best (and safest!) experience I recommend checking out one of these tour companies:

Arctic Adventures | Tours range from $150-350 USD.

Glacier Guides | Whatever glacier adventure and price range you are after, they have it!

2 | Horseback Riding

I know what you might be thinking, horseback riding, that isn’t anything unique? Oh but trust me it is!

Icelandic HorsesThe Icelandic horses are a breed only found in Iceland and while they may be small in size but these horses can handle the tough Icelandic conditions like no other. Add in the fact that they are ridiculously cute and you will be signing up to explore the Icelandic nature with one of the adorable Icelandic horse as your sidekick.

Some places to check out for your own Icelandic horseback riding adventure:

Eldhestar | I am thinking the horses and puffins tour sounds like a cuteness overload that I must go on!

Viking Horses | A more personalized experience so you can fully enjoy your time with your Icelandic horse and the Icelandic nature.

3 | Lava Caving

Explore the dark and hidden lava tubes and see up close how Iceland was created!

Lava Caves Iceland via

Visit ancient caves filled with stunning colors and lava formations that volcanic eruptions have left behind. These tours are open year round and are the perfect addition to any Iceland adventure. You will be able to say you explored Iceland in every possible way after going underground on one of these tours!

Arctic Rafting | With locations varying by season you will want to come back and check out the lava caves in each season!

Icelandic Mountain Guides | Combine your lava caving adventure with a soak in a geothermal hot spring, a complete Icelandic adventure!

4 | Snorkeling at Silfra

“Snorkeling Silfra is liquid meditation Iceland-Style”- Dive.is

Travel-Trip-Iceland-A Winter’s Divevia

This is at the top of H’s Icelandic bucket list and for good reason. Not only does Silfra have one of the clearest underwater visibilities in the World but you will also be snorkeling in a crack between the American and Eurasian continents, how cool is that! This is one unique experience that can only happen in Iceland. For tour booking information check out here.

5 | Explore an Ice Cave

Also known as Crystal Caves, the ice caves found in the Icelandic glaciers are a wonder of nature! Unlike anything you have ever done in your travels, walking through a sparkling ice cave that shimmers with beautiful blues is like walking under a frozen ocean.

Ice Caves in Iceland via

Ice cave tours run from November to March. It is important that you do not try and venture into an ice cave without a guide. I recommend checking out the following tours so you can start planning your visit to these magical looking ice caves!

Extreme Iceland | “The fantastic realm of glacial blue ice in South Iceland” - day tours start around $150USD

Glacier Guides |
“An adventurous day for adventurous people with a rewarding “once in a life time” experience!” - day tours start around $150USD

Iceland is a unique country meant to be explored in a unique way! Book one of these tours and have an Icelandic story that no one will ever tire of hearing!

Note: I have not taken any of these tours, but don’t worry, they are all on my Icelandic bucket list!

Question of the Day?
Which tour would you chose?

Glacier hiking and those ice caves look incredible! My cousin was on a Canadian reality show for a travel network and went glacier hiking — it looked like a once in a life time experience.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh wow, I bet that was such an awesome experience for your cousin! We have been planning on going on a glacier hike trip this winter but the weather has been so bad this year we keep putting it off.

  • http://www.undertheashtree.com/ Ashley Hufford

I horseback road in August and it was so fun- although I was quite sore!! I want to Snorkle this summer :D And whale watch….which is so touristy, but i’ve always wanted to.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

If you go whale watching let me know, I am on the fence about it!

  • http://thetwoyearhoneymoon.com/ Carolann

My husband and I are dying to go to Iceland! I think snorkeling at Silfra would be at the top of his and I would love to do that too. But I think glacier hiking would be my top pick! We went to Alaska a few years ago and had a glacier hike scheduled but didn’t get to go because of the weather, so it’s something I have always wanted to do!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It sounds like if you guys came you would have an amazing trip full of awesome adventures!

  • http://www.routebliss.com/ Christina McCall

Wow, never thought about snorkeling in Iceland! The ice caves and Icelandic horse tours definitely interest me :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Me either, I remember when H was telling me he would love to snorkel here and I was like, uhh in Iceland ha.

  • http://modernalexandria.blogspot.com/ Alexandria

I’d love to explore an ice cave. that will have to be put on my bucket list. My husband and I are actually moving abroad in the next two years. Either Amsterdam, or Stockholm, tough decision. Point is, I’m making a list of things we must do while living abroad, and a few of these made the list.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh how exciting! Both places sound amazing, I am going to Amsterdam in a few weeks for the first time and can’t wait!

  • http://www.clemandmarcella.wordpress.com/ Marcella ~ WhatAWonderfulWorld

These look really amazing - thanks for sharing :) I especially like the look of the glacier walking, that looks incredible. Was it scary? When I was in Iceland I was all booked to go on a horse riding trip… but it got cancelled due to the weather. I don’t think I’ve ever got over the cancellation, boohoo :( There is always next time though!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I actually haven’t done any of these tours yet, but I have heard that the glacier walking isn’t scary at all, even though that is my thoughts about it as well.

  • http://www.kati-rose.com/ Kati Rose

When I first started reading your blog I started looking into going in Summer because short days and little sunglight? Now though after reading through these 5 tours I’m reconsidering because the glacier one and the cave one just sound fascinating! They sound like something a Minnesotan would enjoy. I may now have to start looking into a winter trip instead!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think maybe two trips to Iceland need to happen :) But yes, the tours in the winter sound amazing, it would make it hard to chose!

  • http://www.therachaelway.com/ Rachael

THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!!! Pinned! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Yay!

  • http://mishfish13.com/ Michelle @ Mishfish13

I WANT TO DO ALL OF THESE RIGHT NOW. Especially anything involving the ice. But the snorkeling? Sounds like it would be SO cold! I can only imagine the photos from all of these (silly blogger me). And they don’t come with a bad price tag either :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Doesn’t the ice cave sound so amazing! And I have heard that the snorkeling is really cold, but worth it, I am a bit weary of the cold but will have to try it one day.

  • http://www.travelingbanana.com Hannah @ TravelingBanana.com

Thanks for this! My husband and I are headed to Iceland in the beginning of May for a long weekend. We are BIG scuba divers and are going for the awesome diving there! But, we have a day free before our flight back to Germany and were looking for something to do. There are some great ideas here.

My husband and I are American expats living in Germany. We blog about our scuba diving adventures, traveling around Europe, what it’s like to live as expats. Feel free to check it out! http://www.submergedoaks.com

I’ve been to Iceland twice and have taken and enjoyed the Golden Circle, South Shore, and Lake Myvatn Classic Tours. The next thing I might want to try is a multi-day hike/trek into the Interior (and maybe hut to hut). Kerlingarfjöll or Laugavegur look interesting.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am really hoping to explore more of Laugavegur this summer, it is one of the most beautiful areas!

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chicadeedee

boo we will miss the ice cave adventures! I’m hoping to go hiking on a glacier though, and we are going to try to book a whale watch. Lava caving sounds cool too! Gah, too much cool stuff!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know! There is so much stuff to do! What have you guys planned so far? I hope we can meet up for a drink while your here :)

      • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chicadeedee

not a lot booked, mainly just driving is the plan! Golden circle obvs, and hoping to go on a whale watch and glacier hike. I looked into the lava field tours though and they look so awesome! So I’m gonna put that to my bf and his dad. Drinks for sure!!
