One of the most common things I hear people visiting Iceland will be doing is taking the Golden Circle tour, a great option full of wonderful sites. But for those wanting to break away from the crowd and try something truly amazing these 5 tours are for you!
1 | Glacier Hiking
This one time, in Iceland, I hiked across a glacier… who doesn’t want to start a story like that!
Experience Iceland in its raw form and test out your balance skills with a walk across one of the Icelandic glaciers. The scenery alone is worth gearing up for! These tours are suitable for all skill levels so need to sit this one out if you are not an avid glacier hiker! To make sure you get the best (and safest!) experience I recommend checking out one of these tour companies:
Arctic Adventures | Tours range from $150-350 USD.
Glacier Guides | Whatever glacier adventure and price range you are after, they have it!
2 | Horseback Riding
I know what you might be thinking, horseback riding, that isn’t anything unique? Oh but trust me it is!
The Icelandic horses are a breed only found in Iceland and while they may be small in size but these horses can handle the tough Icelandic conditions like no other. Add in the fact that they are ridiculously cute and you will be signing up to explore the Icelandic nature with one of the adorable Icelandic horse as your sidekick.
Some places to check out for your own Icelandic horseback riding adventure:
Eldhestar | I am thinking the horses and puffins tour sounds like a cuteness overload that I must go on!
Viking Horses | A more personalized experience so you can fully enjoy your time with your Icelandic horse and the Icelandic nature.
3 | Lava Caving
Explore the dark and hidden lava tubes and see up close how Iceland was created!
Visit ancient caves filled with stunning colors and lava formations that volcanic eruptions have left behind. These tours are open year round and are the perfect addition to any Iceland adventure. You will be able to say you explored Iceland in every possible way after going underground on one of these tours!
Arctic Rafting | With locations varying by season you will want to come back and check out the lava caves in each season!
Icelandic Mountain Guides | Combine your lava caving adventure with a soak in a geothermal hot spring, a complete Icelandic adventure!
4 | Snorkeling at Silfra
“Snorkeling Silfra is liquid meditation Iceland-Style”- Dive.is

This is at the top of H’s Icelandic bucket list and for good reason. Not only does Silfra have one of the clearest underwater visibilities in the World but you will also be snorkeling in a crack between the American and Eurasian continents, how cool is that! This is one unique experience that can only happen in Iceland. For tour booking information check out here.
5 | Explore an Ice Cave
Also known as Crystal Caves, the ice caves found in the Icelandic glaciers are a wonder of nature! Unlike anything you have ever done in your travels, walking through a sparkling ice cave that shimmers with beautiful blues is like walking under a frozen ocean.
Ice cave tours run from November to March. It is important that you do not try and venture into an ice cave without a guide. I recommend checking out the following tours so you can start planning your visit to these magical looking ice caves!
Extreme Iceland | “The fantastic realm of glacial blue ice in South Iceland” - day tours start around $150USD
Glacier Guides | “An adventurous day for adventurous people with a rewarding “once in a life time” experience!” - day tours start around $150USD
Iceland is a unique country meant to be explored in a unique way! Book one of these tours and have an Icelandic story that no one will ever tire of hearing!
Note: I have not taken any of these tours, but don’t worry, they are all on my Icelandic bucket list!
Question of the Day?
Which tour would you chose?
