Just Another Beautiful Day in Iceland

Welcome to Travel Tuesday!

Travel Tuesday

Today I am sharing my last post about my Easter road trip around the South of Iceland. In case you have missed any of them you can find all my recaps here:

The South Coast of Iceland
Iceland’s Landscapes, The Perfect Model
The Glacier Lagoon

After H and I left the beautiful Glacier Lagoon we got back on the road to go to our next stop. This was one road trip where I looked forward to spending time in the car, the views along the way were amazing.

Iceland LandscapeIceland LandscapeIceland Landscape
Our next stop was a well known waterfall here in Iceland, Svartifoss.

Svartifoss
Svartifoss is famous for its dark and long basaltic columns that are in the shape of a horse shoe. To reach Svartifoss, found in Vatnajökull National Park, you take a 30 minute hike back into the mountains.

Svartifoss
SvartifossSvartifossSvartifossSvartifoss in the distanceSvartifossSvartifossSvartifoss
Svartifoss is also one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland and I can see why. Such a beautiful and interesting waterfall, the formations around Svartifoss are a sight to see.

Svartifoss
From Svartifoss we began our trip back towards Reykjavik. When we had drove the same way the day before everything was covered in snow so we were in for a treat with more beautiful landscapes that had been hidden in the snowstorm.

Iceland LandscapeIceland LandscapeIceland LandscapeThe picture above is of a traditional Icelandic turf house. When your driving out in the countryside you will often see ruins of these homes out in fields, I couldn’t imagine living in one of those during the cold Icelandic winters!

Lava FieldsIn addition to the turf houses, waterfalls and mountains you will also come across fields covered in these rock piles. The rock piles are said to have been markers for travelers and you will find these types of rock piles along the road all over Iceland.

Lava Fields
Our last stop of our road trip was to visit an outdoor pool called Seljavellir. Built in 1923 at the base of one of the starting points to hike the glacier Eyjafjallajökull, Seljavellir was made when they found natural hot water in the area. Today you can still go for a swim in the pool and H and I were determined to find the pool and go swimming.

To get to Seljavellir you have to walk about 20 minutes in the valley between some beautiful mountains.

Seljavellir
And of course you have to cross a river, seems to be the thing to do on hikes here in Iceland.

Seljavellir Seljavellir The pathways aren’t well maintained so look out for broken bridges. SeljavellirSeljavellir This photo is of the hot water tanks where the natural water is pumped from into the pool. When you see this then you know you are almost to the pool.

Seljavellir
When I first saw Seljavellir my first thought was, there is no way I am getting into this pool. But I also didn’t hike all the way out there to not jump in so into those creepy dressing rooms I went.

Seljavellir
It took me a minute to work up the courage to jump into the water. I thought it was just fine to sit by and admire how beautiful the surroundings were.

SeljavellirSeljavellir
Finally I got the courage to jump in (aka H threatened to push me in) and I stayed in the pool for approximately 2 minutes, just long enough for H to jump out and take a picture to prove I got in there.Seljavellir
And no I wasn’t skinny dipping in that creepy water.

I am sure the water is quite nice during the summer but it was so cold when we were visiting so I wouldn’t recommend going for a swim here until it warms up outside. The views alone are worth visiting Seljavellir so even if the pool wasn’t a success the hike was totally worth it.

The views are indeed amazing! Did you cross that bridge at Svartifoss that’s in the picture you took from afar? It looks pretty shaky ;) I’ve seen a turf house in Hammerfest before and apparantly it’s now a Sami restaurant as they don’t live in these houses anymore. But I guess the turf is quite isolating so I don’t think it’s that cold in there in winter…..

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

No we didn’t cross the bridge we had to go back down the hillside and take an even longer way. Ya from what I have read the turf houses were quite isolating but the wind would cause the walls and roof to crumble so you were having turf fall on you often, no fun.

  • http://djseaward.tumblr.com/ Cynthia

Absolutely stunning scenery! I am curious about the turf houses… do you think that the house being “in the turf” could help warm it? I can’t think of any explanation of why else they would be so popular in Iceland. Kudos to you for jumping in the pool! Such an adventurer :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes I think the turf helped keep them warm and there isn’t many trees in Iceland so they didn’t have a chose to build wooden homes. I know the turf houses stayed quite warm but I wouldn’t want to live in one!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

I love all your nature photos! I don’t know if I could have gotten in to that water! Brr! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I don’t think I would have gotten into the water if it wasn’t for H. The place where the hot water was being pumped in was being hogged by the other people visiting the pool. Otherwise I am sure it would have been a much warmer swim if we could have gotten near the hot water pipe.

Such interesting rock formations around the waterfall. Yeah for getting in the water!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

The rock formations were really cool to see, I have never seen anything like them.

  • http://mariellegreen.com/ Marielle Green

Love that waterfall! It looks so amazing!

  • http://Girl-Meets-Globe.com/ Tina @ Girl-Meets-Globe

I just love waterfalls!! And the formation around it is so incredible. Never seen anything like it! I think I might take a pass on that water too. ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

  • http://montgomeryfest.com/ Annie Montgomery

wow. you aren’t kidding. stunning views. and i’m shivering right now just looking at that photo of you in the water! bravesoul.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I know I don’t know if I will be that brave again to jump into cold water but it sure was beautiful!

  • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

You get mega points for changing in those creepy looking place!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Right aren’t those places creepy looking! I think that was almost worse than jumping into the water.

  • Corinne Vail

Thanks to Travel Tuesday, I just stumbled on your blog! I’m excited and will have to really take some time to read it, because Jim and I are headed to Iceland in just a few weeks! Your pics are great!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Welcome! So glad you found my blog and how exciting about your upcoming trip to Iceland! How long will you guys be visiting? Do you have travel plans while your here?

      • Corinne Vail

Kaelene - We are taking the ferry there from Hirtschals, Denmark and doing a 7 day driving tour, so we have accommodation booked, with a sketchy itinerary of the route…but no other real plans…just a list of things I want to do. Do you have any advice on an “unknown” must do? I’d love to hear it! Thanks.

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think just driving around and stumbling upon all the amazing landscape is the best part! So many people don’t do a road trip so I am glad to hear you guys will be! I will let you know if I hear of some names of places that are unknown. I really recommend taking a dip in some hot springs out in nature, you can find them all over the country and it is a great way to experience Iceland!

  • http://daydreamsofsummertime.blogspot.co.uk/ Sarah I

Wow, what amazing views! Your photos are stunning. I would love to go there one day.

Those rock formations are so interesting. Quite the adventurer for taking a dip, despite no ideal conditions…I’m not sure I would have.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

There are so many interesting rock formations here in Iceland! Not sure I would have been so adventurous if it wasn’t for H!

  • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

Your pictures are so beautiful! I’m planning a trip with the boyfriend in Iceland for the end of the year and all your posts are making me want to do a road trip :)

How exciting, I highly recommend a road trip if you visit Iceland so many beautiful places to see out in the countryside!

      • http://thethingsiamcrazyfor.wordpress.com/ Camila

Is it easy to drive around from Reykjavik?
p.s. i forgot to mention it in my first comment, but that pool looked so creepy! you’re brave to have jumped in :)

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It is really easy to drive from Reykjavik, if you have time I really recommend leaving Reykjavik and going around the country more.

  • http://www.adeecodedlife.com/ Dee

Your pictures of Iceland never disappoint! Gorgeous as always! :)

      Thank you Dee :)

Bahahah… “and no I wasn’t skinnydipping in that creepy water.” Those turf houses are so cool!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha it really looked like I was taking a naked dip in that creepy water lol.

  • http://www.alonewithmytea.blogspot.com Julie

The waterfall is beautiful. You are brave… I don’t think I would have gotten in that pool!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I think my bravery was caused by H, if it weren’t for him I don’t know if I would have been brave enough to get in there!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy Dorn

Those turf houses look so interesting. How do they make them, do you know!?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Aren’t they so interesting! That is a good question I will have to look into more about how they made them.

this is so incredible gorgeous. crossing the river looks like fun :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

It was really fun crossing the river, but it wouldn’t of been as fun if I had fallen in :)

  • http://luyoutravel.blogspot.com/ Elizabeth Georgian

That turf house is amazing! I would love to see that some day.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

They are all over in the countryside. I think they are really interesting to see!

  • http://www.jadeoak.com/ jackie jade

what a trek to that pool. i don’t do well with cold weather/water, but i guess you HAVE to jump in after the hike!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That was my thought exactly, I felt like I had to jump into the water after our hike out there!

  • http://sophieinclogs.com Sophie

Oh my gosh that pool is seriously creepy!!!! Major props to you for jumping in! Loved this post, there are so many unusual things to see in Iceland - those rocks, those abandoned turf houses … I’m surprised more movies aren’t set in Iceland.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha right it was a bit creepy and nothing at all like the pictures I had seen. Actually a ton of movies have been filmed here in Iceland and it often is used to portray different places. I was surprised to learn about how many movies have been filmed here.

  • http://thecynicalsailor.blogspot.co.nz/ Ellen

Those basaltic columns remind me of the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. I’ve just recently found your blog and am loving learning more about Iceland. Have you done any posts on Icelandic food? It would be really interesting to hear about your favorite foods there.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Welcome so glad you found my blog! I haven’t done one yet on Icelandic food I will have to soon!

  • http://www.migrationexpert.com.au/ Rachel

Err, I won’t bother checking out if the water’s fine in that pool. It does look like it hasn’t been cleaned for the last 10 years! But I’d go for the view, you’re right about that!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha I don’t think it has been cleaned either! It helped knowing that fresh water is constantly being pumped into it, and the view, the view was amazing.

  • http://www.thisramblingcorner.com/ Laura Evans

Gah! Everytime I see your pictures of this country I want to be there with you. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing all the time as I think it’s the only way I’ll be seeing Iceland for awhile! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thank you! Iceland is such a beautiful country I am glad I can share some of it with you .)

  • Phoebe Thomas

I’m so excited to see that pool still exists. I remember from my childhood when I lived in Iceland and can’t wait to be going back in less than 2 months now! Yay!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

That is so cool to hear you went to it as a child! Was it cleaner than? How long will you be in Iceland on your trip? Will be really interesting to see how things have changed since you were here!

  • http://www.adelanteblog.com/ Courtney

Those piles of rocks alongside the road look so strange and intriguing! It’s really interesting that they were once used for travelers. What a unique waterfall as well! Your adventure in southern Iceland truly looks beautiful.
