Welcome to Travel Tuesday!
Today I am sharing my last post about my Easter road trip around the South of Iceland. In case you have missed any of them you can find all my recaps here:
The South Coast of Iceland
Iceland’s Landscapes, The Perfect Model
The Glacier Lagoon
After H and I left the beautiful Glacier Lagoon we got back on the road to go to our next stop. This was one road trip where I looked forward to spending time in the car, the views along the way were amazing.

Our next stop was a well known waterfall here in Iceland, Svartifoss.

Svartifoss is famous for its dark and long basaltic columns that are in the shape of a horse shoe. To reach Svartifoss, found in Vatnajökull National Park, you take a 30 minute hike back into the mountains.

Svartifoss in the distance

Svartifoss is also one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland and I can see why. Such a beautiful and interesting waterfall, the formations around Svartifoss are a sight to see.

From Svartifoss we began our trip back towards Reykjavik. When we had drove the same way the day before everything was covered in snow so we were in for a treat with more beautiful landscapes that had been hidden in the snowstorm.

The picture above is of a traditional Icelandic turf house. When your driving out in the countryside you will often see ruins of these homes out in fields, I couldn’t imagine living in one of those during the cold Icelandic winters!
In addition to the turf houses, waterfalls and mountains you will also come across fields covered in these rock piles. The rock piles are said to have been markers for travelers and you will find these types of rock piles along the road all over Iceland.

Our last stop of our road trip was to visit an outdoor pool called Seljavellir. Built in 1923 at the base of one of the starting points to hike the glacier Eyjafjallajökull, Seljavellir was made when they found natural hot water in the area. Today you can still go for a swim in the pool and H and I were determined to find the pool and go swimming.
To get to Seljavellir you have to walk about 20 minutes in the valley between some beautiful mountains.

And of course you have to cross a river, seems to be the thing to do on hikes here in Iceland.

The pathways aren’t well maintained so look out for broken bridges.
This photo is of the hot water tanks where the natural water is pumped from into the pool. When you see this then you know you are almost to the pool.

When I first saw Seljavellir my first thought was, there is no way I am getting into this pool. But I also didn’t hike all the way out there to not jump in so into those creepy dressing rooms I went.

It took me a minute to work up the courage to jump into the water. I thought it was just fine to sit by and admire how beautiful the surroundings were.

Finally I got the courage to jump in (aka H threatened to push me in) and I stayed in the pool for approximately 2 minutes, just long enough for H to jump out and take a picture to prove I got in there.
And no I wasn’t skinny dipping in that creepy water.
I am sure the water is quite nice during the summer but it was so cold when we were visiting so I wouldn’t recommend going for a swim here until it warms up outside. The views alone are worth visiting Seljavellir so even if the pool wasn’t a success the hike was totally worth it.
