A Day in the Life

….of me!

One of the most requested posts I get is more of my daily life. You ask, I try and deliver. Here is a look into my day from yesterday. Hope you enjoy:)

6:30 AM: My alarm goes off and I scramble around in the dark trying to find it. I knock everything off my dresser but finally my alarm is silent, and H hasn’t even stirred, that guy can sleep through anything.

6:35 AM: I lay in bed for a few minutes checking my phone, Instagram, Bloglovin; WordPress, Gmail. I do this every morning and once I have checked everything I slowly make my way out of bed.

6:40 AM: Decked out in my cheetah bathrobe (aka my favorite thing ever) and sarong blanket (my winter fashion trend) I curl up on the couch with a cup of coffee to do some blog work.

A Day in the Life I use this same coffee cup every morning, H got me if for Christmas last year because my mom used to always sing You Are My Sunshine to me when I was little.

7:20 AM: I check my work email and schedule for the day so I won’t be bombarded with emails when I get to the office.

7:25 AM: Breakfast time. During the week I usually have the same breakfast, a warm bowl of oatmeal with some type of fruit. Sometimes I get really wild and add in a little bit of peanut butter but not today.

7:30 AM: Sit back down and get cozy on my couch to eat breakfast and start reading other blogs.

7:55 AM: I hear H’s alarm going off which means its time for me to go start getting ready for the day. Goodbye cozy couch.

8:00 AM: I wash up my breakfast dishes, prepare my lunch and take my vitamins. Every morning I take a Vitamin D and Iron supplement and finish off with a spoonful of Lysi, gotta beat the winter blues somehow.

8:25 AM: Head outside to discover our stairs covered in snow after we shoveled them clean last night. Gotta love winter. I am so glad I decided to bring back my Ugg boots from the states, much easier to watch in than my heels.

A Day in the Life

8:28 AM: I sit inside the car while H scrapes off the snow and ice and think how happy I am that it isn’t me outside in the cold.

8:40 AM: Arrive to work and slowly make my way across the icy entrance. Unlock my office only to discover someone has left the window open overnight, it is freezing!

8:45 AM: Start up my computer, adjust my desk so I can stand while I work, and get to work. I love my adjustable desk and try and stand as much as possible during the day, makes such a difference and helps keep me awake in the afternoons!

8:50 AM: I open up my notebook and planner and get ready to tackle the day. Notice the picture inside my planner, I like having a piece of my family near me everyday:)

A day in the life

9:30 AM: First meeting of the day. I am on the annual ball committee (the annual ball is like the ultimate work party) this year and with one month left before the party we have lots of planning to do. I am meeting with one other woman who always just speaks Icelandic to me, I keep my fingers crossed I can follow along.

9:45 AM: My brain is exhausted of our Icelandic/English conversation. I finally give in and ask her if we can have the rest of the meeting in English. Thankfully she is in a good mood and agrees.

9:55 AM: I come back to my desk and draft the flyer announcing the location of the annual ball. I will let you guys in on the location, you may have heard of it, the Blue Lagoon! Ya, it is going to be ridiculously awesome.

10:05 AM: I start tackling a big project I am working on which involves me putting my native English skills to use and editing/rewriting several documents that have been translated from Icelandic.

10:25 AM: The cleaning lady comes in so we head out to let her do her thing and chat in our break area. I just love this view, even when it is of a bunch of snow.

A Day in the Life

10:35 AM: Welcome a new international student who has just arrived to Iceland from India. This is one of my favorite aspects of my job, I love getting to met people from all over the world, it keeps each day interesting and fun!

11:20 AM: Another meeting about a party, I swear I have other meetings about work stuff as well. Our department is having a murder mystery party this weekend and I am so excited!

A Day in the Life

11:40 AM: I am suppose to head into a two hour long meeting, all in Icelandic, but thankfully am excused when a last minute project comes up. I often go to meetings that are in Icelandic and can usually follow along for about half the meeting, but two hours is just way to long for me to try and understand so I am happy to take on the extra work.

12:05 PM: Lunch time!

A Day in the Life

12:10 PM: I eat lunch with my friend who I call my crazy British friend, because well she is a bit crazy (in a good, hilarious way) and she is from England. But really I usually call her Ms. England and she calls me Ms. America, because our normal names are not as fun. We hit it off right away when I started my job and have been good friends ever since, and being the only two foreigners in the offices it helps having someone who can relate to you by your side.

12:25 PM: After we finish our lunch Ms. England and I figure out our flights for an upcoming work trip we are going on together in April to Berlin. I am so excited that I have the opportunity to travel for work and even more excited about the fact that we get to go together.

12:45 PM: Head back to my desk and do a little blog reading before I need to get back to work.

1:00 PM: Meeting time! Thankfully this meeting is in English with the academic staff from my department. My department meetings are never dull you guys. With individuals from Italy, Germany, Canada, Iceland, and Spain, well lets just say we are a fun bunch and when we all get together for a meeting it is always interesting with lots of different accents.

2:05 PM: Back to my desk and it is absolutely freezing in our office. I get a cup of tea to warm up and have a orange to snack on.

A Day in the Life

2:15 PM: I put on my headphones and turn on my favorite Spotify playlist to listen to at work, Your favorite Coffeehouse.

3:30 PM: Break to say goodbye to a few of my co-workers and send an email to my hairdresser. I am so happy I can just send a message on Facebook to book my appointment, if I couldn’t I am pretty sure I would never get my hair done here, because you know I have an issue with calling people.

3:35 PM: Ms. England comes to my desk to harass me for help with a letter she is writing. We frequently work on writing English text together, often having to translate the text from Icelandic first. It has been really interesting to see how different US English can be from British English and we often argue over which way is the better way.

3:55 PM: I check the clock and can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by. I finish sending off a few emails and pack up for the day.

4:00 PM: Off work! I head down to the gym in the creepy basement and send my sisters a snapchat of me in the elevator, just because.

A Day in the Life

4:05 PM: Head over to the treadmill and wish that it was not a frozen tundra outside so I could finally run by the sea again. At least my running shoes bring some color into the dark gym.

A Day in the Life

5:10 PM: H texts me to say he is on his way. I finish stretching and take the quickest shower ever.

5:20 PM: We are stuck in traffic, which is actually very rare. I blame it on the crazy wind blowing the snow everywhere making it difficult to see.

A Day in the Life

5:40 PM: Arrive back home and I am starving! I have one of my favorite Icelandic snacks, flatkökur (kind of like a thin whole wheat flat bread) with smoked salmon.

A Day in the Life

5:45 PM: I get to work on dinner while H and I talk about our day. On the menu tonight, zucchini lasagna.

A Day in the Life

6:00 PM: H leaves for the gym and I turn on the SNL 40th Anniversary special while I finish making dinner.

6:30 PM: Dinner is in the oven and I sit down to start studying for my Icelandic test I have at the end of this week. I have a lot of studying to do, yikes.

A Day in the Life

7:25 PM: H come back from the gym and his brother comes over so I can give him his waffle iron. R let me borrow it for my Girl Gone International Galentine’s event last week (which was a huge success, everyone loved the waffles!)

7:40 PM: Dinner is done, finally.

A day in the life

8:25 PM: I call back home. I am so lucky my phone plan includes international calling at no additional charge, makes staying in touch so much easier!

8:50 PM: Get off the phone, lay out my outfit for tomorrow, change into my pjs and sit down on the couch next to H to work on this post.

A day in the life

9:20 PM: H helps me study for my Icelandic test. I am not very interested and instead take pictures of us and post on Instagram.

9:30 PM: My brain is shot for the day so I head to bed to read. I have a few chapters left in The Husband’s Secret and want to finish it tonight.

10:00 PM: I finish my book, brush my teeth and get back into bed. Play a few games of candy crush while I wait for H to come to bed.

10:10 PM: We turn on an episode of Homeland. I am not sure how I feel about it, I loved season one, season two was not my favorite, and I am still deciding how I feel about season 3.

10:35 PM: I am woken up by H checking to see if I still want to watch the show. Clearly I am not interested.

10:40 PM: I give up on Homeland, kiss H goodnight, and roll over on my left side (the only position I fall asleep in) and pass out.

The end.

Question of the Day?
So what did you think, did you like this kind of post or did I totally bore you?
