When In Amsterdam

Oh Amsterdam, such a charmer. It is pretty much impossible to not walk around the city in absolute bliss and gush over each charming building and canal you pass by. I mean this house, it just screams charm doesn’t it?

Amsterdam Canals

Swoon I know.

All that Amsterdam charm aside our trip wasn’t all blissful strolls along the canals and smelling the tulips. Like all experiences in life our trip was full of some fails, but some awesome wins as well. To share some of the wisdom I learned from my mistakes here are things not to do, and some tips of things you most definitely should do, when in Amsterdam!

Fail | Not checking the weather forecast before we left

We definitely did not pack properly for our trip and froze the entire time. The wind in Amsterdam is no joke! You would think coming from Iceland and all I would be prepared for chilly temperatures but wow were we so unprepared for how cold it would be in Amsterdam! You can’t tell in the picture above but I am wearing two sweaters underneath that jacket and I was still freezing. I am now paying the price with a nasty cold that has knocked me into bed this week so I most definitely will not make the mistake of not checking the weather forecast before I travel again!

Win | Several glorious sunny moments!

Amsterdam Canals

I can only imagine how amazing Amsterdam is during the summer time. So many cafes perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the sun and view of the canals, I think I need to go back in the summertime!

Fail | Not spending every day at the tulip fields!

Okay this is not really a fail but I just wanted to have some pretty pictures of flowers in this post:)

Win | Visiting Keukenhof Gardens

Our visit to Keukenhof Gardens was amazing! I was like a little kid running around taking pictures of all the pretty flowers (including selfies of course!). If you are on the search for tulips while in Amsterdam head out to Keukenhof Gardens, and don’t forget to have a waffle while you are there, they are delicious.

Fail | Eating at a “steakhouse” restaurant

I don’t know if this is a thing in Amsterdam but seriously every other restaurant had the word steakhouse in it. And I have now decided that if steakhouse is in the title it means shitty restaurant.

Anyways, thanks to these two boys who need to eat non stop and our too impatient to look around for restaurants our first meal in Amsterdam was at one of these steakhouses and it was the worst! We ended that first day thinking we would starve in Amsterdam our food was so terrible. Thankfully after our food tour on day two we were told to steer clear of these steakhouses and given a list of places that had some delicious food.

Win | Our dinner at Seasons Restaurant . I am still drooling over the scallops

This meal restored my faith in food in Amsterdam. It was heaven in my mouth! If your looking for a great spot for dinner when in Amsterdam add Seasons Restaurant to your list!

Fail | We didn’t pre-order tickets to the Anne Frank house.

I know so many of you all recommend to me to get my tickets to the Anne Frank house ahead of time, which was totally the plan. And then before I knew it it was one week before our trip and all the online tickets to Anne Frank’s house were sold out until May, yikes. When we saw the line those first few days I was pretty bummed that we probably weren’t going to visit, because there was no way I was waiting 3+ hours in that line! But we were determined so on our last day in Amsterdam we got up at 6 am and were in line by 7am in the rain but it was totally worth the hour and a half wait.

Win | Visiting the Anne Frank house

After reading the book as a little girl it was amazing to put the story to life walking through the Anne Frank house. It was one of those things that really makes you stop and think. Anne Frank was truly an inspiration and my visit to her house was well worth the wait.

Fail | The Red Light District.

I know, I know, the Red Light District is kinda a must see when in Amsterdam. But for me I could have gone without it. I personally found this area to be my least favorite in the city. A bit too dirty for me and it seemed to lose that special Amsterdam charm. Still it is something to see and if your in Amsterdam you should walk around a bit, it just wasn’t really what I was expecting.

Win | Stumbling upon Wynand Fockink

Hidden in the alleyways of the Red Light District was this little gem. Wynand Fockink is a liqueur distillery and a must visit when in Amsterdam. The drinks were so interesting to try and the antique bottles lining the walls are reason enough to visit!

Fail | Not taking more pictures of the beautiful canals!

Amsterdam Canals

My fingers were so frozen that the thought of taking them out of my pockets to take a picture was not too appealing. I did of course manage to get a few pictures of the canals but I am really wishing I wasn’t so frozen so I could have taken more. I don’t think you can ever have enough pictures of the beautiful canals in Amsterdam!

Win | Strolling through the Jordaan district

I knew I was going to fall in love with the Jordaan district as soon as I saw it. From the beautiful canals to the cozy little cafes and adorable shops hidden down small alleyways, I just couldn’t get enough of the Jordaan district!

Amsterdam Canals

I have lots more Amsterdam fun to share with you all including our visit to the tulip fields and my first walking food tour experience! Stay tuned for more Amsterdam charm.

Question of the Day?
Do you have hits and misses when you travel?

The Jordaan district was my favourite too! And I totally agree with you about the Red Light district…

I could spend all day everyday just strolling through the Jordaan district!

I also really disliked the Red Light district but I do love Amsterdam! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The Red Light district was completely different than what I expected, but Amsterdam was amazing!

So many flowers! I’m so un-used to nature here in Chicago, it’s crazy to see that it actually exists out there… So pretty.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I loved spending the day outside of the city walking around those gardens, so many pretty flowers.

  • http://www.somethingsaturdays.com/the-blog.html Elizabeth @Something Saturdays

When I lived in the Netherlands, my grandmother and my aunt came to visit for a weekend and my grandmother insisted on visiting the red light district in Amsterdam! She is a very prim and proper 80+ year old, so it was quite the surprise. As we were walking around, she kept saying “I hope you’re getting a good look at the girls in the window - that’s what it’s all about!”…. What the heck, Nanny?! haha

The red light district is definitely a “thing” you feel the need to see when you visit but it isn’t overly impressive.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha oh I love that story about your grandma! I agree, it is something to see but not that impressive.

  • http://www.nomadnotebook.com/ Lizzy

Looks like you had such a great time! You’ve made me want to go back and visit Anne Frank’s house and tulip gardens! I also took a distaste to the red light district which actually put a big downer on our trip there. It was just so tacky among the rest of the architecture and canals of Amsterdam. I found it quite upsetting too- I think the legitimising of sex work poses so many problems, as well as contributing to the sexualising of women in general.

    Lizzy from Nomad Notebook

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I agree, the Red light district was just a bit of a downer and I just avoided the area while we were there. And I agree, it was a tacky thing to see among all those charming canals.

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

I wouldn’t have guessed it was cold there unless you’d said it. Amsterdam looks lovely and sunny, even on those ultra-windy days!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

When the sun was out and shinning it was amazing! Sadly there wasn’t many times the sun did come out but when it did I was sure to capture it on camera:)

  • http://simplicityrelished.com/ Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh my, I can’t get enough of those photos!! This is a stunning place- I’ve been wanting to go to Amsterdam for years!

It is a beautiful place to visit!

  • http://dianadegzz.blogspot.com/ Diana

I’m adding a food tour to the next place we visit.. we spent Easter there two years ago, and it was also cold!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! The food tour was a real highlight of our trip. I am going to look into food tours from now on when we travel.

  • http://www.smalltownsandcitylights.com/ Rachel @ STCL

  • http://www.clemandmarcella.wordpress.com/ Marcella ~ WhatAWonderfulWorld

Sounds like an amazing trip! :) I’ve seen so so many stunning Amdterdam photos lately and I so wish I could go again, I went as s child so didn’t fully appreciate it all. I’ve also been stuck in the wrong clothes on trips too after not checking the forecast, it’s the worst!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I have always wanted to visit Amsterdam and it was as beautiful as I imagined it would be! It really is the worst when your stuck in the wrong clothes, puts a bit of a bummer on the trip.

  • Sharon Robinson

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Same here, I was more about visiting the pretty tulip fields then checking out the red light district.

  • http://www.teamstarnes.com Alexandra @ Team Starnes

Fail | We didn’t pre-order tickets to the Anne Frank house. <<<< This sooo happened to us, but we went in February and it was just too miserable to wait outside. I really want to go back and prebook tickets ahead of time. Also, I am excited to try that bar in the RLD… Looks fun! xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I had no idea we had to pre-order the tickets that far in advance! And that line gets crazy long, I could not imagine waiting outside in the cold for long. It sounds like a trip back is definitely needed :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So very true. H doesn’t like seeing pictures of places we are traveling to because he doesn’t want to be disappointed. It can really change your trip if you have such high expectations and are let down. I am sure your upcoming trip is going to be amazing!

  • http://www.alkeksabroad.com/ Courtney {Alkeks Abroad}

We did the same thing with the weather in Bruges, we were literally wearing all of the clothes we packed everyday. I have no desire to go to the red light district, it just gives me an icky feeling thinking about it. I loooove all your gorgeous canal pictures.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes ha same here! I just kept layering everything on that I had in my suitcase and I was still cold!

Miss: Athens - Big, sprawling and ugly.
Hit: San Sebastian Spain - Gorgeous and with great food.

Miss: Andorra - Nice Mountain areas, but basically a crowded European discount shopping mall.
Hit: Portugal, particularly Lisbon and Porto. Great scenery, food, and people.

We went during summer and it was sooooo hot!! And then it was be thunderstorming the next day. Sorry you had some crappy food! I think eating Indonesian food is a must there! Because indonesia was a Dutch colony, the food there is so good. Ooh and Dutch pancakes too!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

We were lucky and had some amazing food the last few days we were there, you are so right, the Indonesian food is amazing!

I think you guys came during the worst of the windy weather - leftovers from a German storm??!! My parents were freezing too! I 100% agree with you about the ‘steakhouse’ restaurants and basically any overly advertised restaurant in Amsterdam: not delicious. Glad you guys found better places :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh darn, of course the wind storms follow me everywhere ha. So very true, any time a restaurant has people standing outside trying to usher me in I know it is someplace I don’t want to eat.

I’m so glad you got to see Anne Frank’S house. I’d love to visit one day - it feels like something important to do; not just to honour her memory, but also the lives of so many others.

Visiting the Anne Franke House was a special moment for us as well. Seeing the annex she hid in was very moving - as you said, her story is one we all lived through her books nearly ever year of high school!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So agree! It was well worth the wait for me to get to visit her house and have the book I read come to life.

  • Julia

Joordan is my absolute favorite! I hated the Red Light District as well. You said it perfectly, that area just looses it’s Amsterdam charm!

And yay that you waited it out for the Anne Frank Huis, I did too in November in the freezing cold, and am so glad I did. You just can’t go without seeing it! :D

Haha! Loved the format of this post. And although there were a few bad points, you definitely had some amazing good points. I went to Amsterdam. Last August (we also got caught out by the weather as it rained a lot and I’m from Scotland!) so we missed the tulips. I would love to go to that garden now to see the tulips!

We had so many similar experiences! We hated the red light area too, we got off the train station and I remember feeling really let down but as soon as we got out the the canals, perfect! We also ate in Seasons restaurant, so good! Probably the best meal I had our whole trip.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Laura :) Seasons restaurant, so good, I agree I think it was the best meal we had as well!

  • Ashleigh

Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities! I went around September/October and the weather was amazing. It was so nice to stroll along the canals. I missed out on the Anne Frank house though because I had no idea you are supposed to book in advance.

I bet Amsterdam in the fall is so beautiful! We looked into booking our Anne Frank tickets about a week before we were going and I was so surprised to see them already booked out!

Every trip has a hit or miss. For me, the red light district in Nuremberg somewhat spoiled my taste for the city. I just found it depressing and sad. I can’t get the images of those women out of my mind nor forget the thought that it’s not as “empowering” a situation as a lot of people like to say it is….

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So very true, every trip is full of hits or misses.

It is so true about how not packing appropriately can ruin your vacation. In Copenhagen I bought an extra jacket because I was FREEZING and it was August!
