When Iceland Gives You Sunshine, You Go Exploring

This past weekend was full of blue skies and sunshine, a rare April treat for us up here in the Arctic. In fact, I am pretty sure last year it was snowing around this time, and I cried in the grocery store parking lot when a bunch of snow fell off the roof of my car onto me as I opened the trunk.

It wasn’t my best moment.

But this year both Iceland and I have redeemed ourselves from that snowy April day last year.

Well I kinda did, more on that in a minute.

Back to how Iceland has redeemed itself.

I know I keep talking about the weather, but this has by far been the best winter and start of spring weather I have ever experienced in Iceland! (I am writing this with my fingers crossed as I don’t want to jinx it, so cross your fingers for me while you read it as well, I don’t want a random April, May or even June snow shower to head my way!). When the weather is good in Iceland you just can’t help but talk about it.

And when Iceland throws a sunny weekend with temperatures almost in the double digits your way you better get outside and make the most of it!

Side note: This adorable red roofed cabin out in the middle of nowhere, I need to stay here asap. I think it would be the perfect spot to celebrate my birthday next month (hint, hint, wink, wink Viking).

While I love re-visiting some of my favorite places near Reykjavik my favorite kind of adventures are when the Viking and I head off somewhere new to explore. And with such nice weather on the forecast this past weekend called for new adventures.

My only requirement for the new adventure, I wanted it to include a hot spring. There is nothing better than spending a sunny day soaking away in one of the lovely hot springs around Iceland, the more out in the middle of nowhere the better. And the hot spring my search lead me to, the Blessed Pool located in Laugarvatn.

The Viking was sceptical about my amazing new hot spring I found, but since it was going to be nice weather he was on board for an adventure. We researched places in the area to check out along the way to Blessed Pool and just like that we had our perfect sunny Saturday adventure.

Our first stop took us to a volcanic crater lake, Kerið. I have seen so many pictures of the beautiful blue color of the water at Kerið and I can now say, not all of those images were totally photoshopped.

Let’s talk about my first fail of the day, not putting my hair up before stepping outside.

If you have long hair and are planning a trip to Iceland make sure to pack lots of hairties, trust me on this.

So my hair didn’t really allow me to see much of Kerið until I started walking the other way around the crater, but who needs to see pretty places??

I mean really having your hair down is more important for selfie taking.

Thankfully there was little wind when we made our way down into the crater so I was finally able to take in the turquoise blue water properly.

More on this pretty place in a post to come.

The credit for finding our next stop all goes to the Viking.

Faxi waterfall, not to be confused with foxy (personally I think foxy Faxi is the best name) is actually located along the popular Golden Circle route but for some reason is not as well known as other stops in the area.

This is fine by me, I am selfish and like having waterfalls all to myself.

This stop was the unexpected highlight of our adventure.

We enjoyed lunch outside in the sunshine with foxy Faxi as our view. The Viking went picture crazy and got a bunch of gorgeous shots. And I just danced around which may or may not have resulted in me gracefully falling…

I am constant entertainment for that Viking of mine:)

More beautiful pictures that my Viking took of Faxi to come.

After our stop at Faxi it was time for the grand finale of the day, soaking in the Blessed Pool. You guys, I was so pumped for this stop, I probably asked the Viking ten times if he had his bathing suit with him. There was no way I was missing out on soaking in this hot spring.

When we arrived in Laugarvatn, the town Blessed Pool was located, we weren’t exactly sure where to go to find the hot spring. But this town is small, as in it takes two minutes to drive thru, so we just drove around looking for signs.

When H pointed out where he thought it was, I disagreed, but we drove down anyways to check it out. And the Viking guessed correctly, there it was, the sign for my dear Blessed Pool.

Looks amazing right?

This is where my big fail of the day comes in.

The Blessed Pool is best described as a charming small hot spring for one.

Okay, let’s be real, the Blessed Pool is a tiny hole in the ground with dirt floating around not big enough for one person, and it is right next to some buildings…

As my Viking walked up he couldn’t stop laughing as I sadly dipped my hand into the warm water of Blessed Pool, which is now going to be known as the Blessed Puddle.

But hey it was by the lake so at least the view was pretty.

My Viking certainly enjoyed himself claiming he was right about my Blessed Pool.

I tried to hide my smirk from him, I didn’t want him to know just yet that I thought this fail of mine was funny too.

So, this adventure ended in a fail, but then I came home and enjoyed drinks and reading in the sunshine in our yard, so I think we can mark this day down as a win compared to last year.

More to come on Kerið and foxy Faxi. And even though we didn’t get to do what was the main point of the trip, soak in some hot springs, the Blessed Puddle will forever be an inside joke for the Viking and I.

Question of the Day?
Have you ever been disappointed by a place you visited?

Windy days are when I curse having long hair! I can’t help but laugh at the Blessed Pool ;) xx

Same here! Haha, even though I was disappointed I couldn’t swim in it at least the Blessed Pool was still pretty to look at :)

  • http://www.adventuresofadreamcatcher.com Lisa K

Ha ha ha…That’s hilarious about Blessed Pool aka Blessed Puddle. Oh well, at least it’s an excuse to go on another adventure in search of a bigger hot spring!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha the Viking is still laughing about it lol. Right! I think so to, this just means next weekend I need another hot spring adventure :)

I love reading your adventure travel posts like this. The one where you are standing in the middle of the falls by yourself……absolutely amazing!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much girl! I love getting out of the city for a little bit after a long work week, and it helps that Iceland is so pretty to explore :)

  • http://www.truecoloursblog.com Casey

Such a gorgeous Icelandic day! I think we stopped at that crater with the lake on our first trip in Iceland. And if it’s the same one, our guide told us that years ago Bjork did a major concert there or something? Ring any bells?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It sounds like a place she would have a concert! It is just past Þingvellir, I can’t believe it has taken me so long to visit!

      • http://www.truecoloursblog.com Casey

Yea totally the place we went to then…

  • http://heleneinbetween.com/ Helene

totally fine to cry- we all need to do it sometimes! and i’m glad he was there to capture a pic of your fall!! my hair is ALWAYS getting in my face. and blessed pool looks awesome!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha, he seems to be great about always being there at those moments :) And hair, always in the face, I don’t even try and wear lip gloss my hair would always be stuck on my mouth then.

Happy to hear the weather is great over there! It’s been back and forth between rain and sunshine here in Paris. Mostly rain however. Sadly, we were disappointed with Prague… seems like most people rave about it… but didn’t live up to expectations in our view. But it’s okay to have 1-2 places that disappoint when you have a bunch of others that live up to and even exceed. Iceland was one of those places for us.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It has been so nice lately, much better than last spring at least (fingers crossed it stays this way!). I have to say I agree about Prague, it was beautiful but I can’t say that I thought it was the most beautiful European city like I often hear. But glad Iceland didn’t disappoint! :)

It was so cloudy and cold here in Slovenia. Today is better though :) and that hot spring looks cozy for one person, if that person was a baby. I laughed so much when I saw this on snapchat. Looks like something that it would happen to me as well!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

My co-workers and I just spent out lunch break dreaming of a trip back to Slovenia :) Haha, I had to laugh quite a bit after that as well, at least it makes for good stories:)

  • http://www.lovedandwanderlust.com/ Melai @ Loved and Wanderlust

The Blessed Pond err the pool still looks nice! Haha! You can still dip your feet to relax. :) I wonder why they call it pool, it’s misleading.

We stopped by the Faxi Waterfall during our Golden Circle Tour last year. It was beautiful and peaceful since only our group was there. Gullfoss was touristy.

Happy to hear that the weather is getting warmer there! <3

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha yes, it is the perfect spot to soak your feet :) Faxi waterfall is so nice and peaceful, a nice break away from the touristy spots. :)

  • Katie Currie-Smith

I’m loving that the weather is better than last year there. I’ve been watching web cams and weather reports hoping it stays nice and thaws out for my trip over in 28 days. In Seattle we had 85°F last week which was amazing.
Also as someone with overly long fine hair, I’m not looking forward to the wind when I visit, hair ties will be my lifesaver.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Me too! Such a difference compared to the cold stormy spring we had last year! I will keep my fingers crossed that the nice weather sticks around for your trip!

  • http://ofgoldenroses.blogspot.com/ Sara Rose

I am still AMAZED by all the beautiful places Iceland has to offer!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Me to! :)

It’s an adorable little puddle, though. Better a failed, yet humorous, adventure than no adventure, right?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Agreed! And it really is a pretty little puddle:)

sometimes a failed adventure makes for a better story than a successful one ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So agreed, they make for some entertaining memories :)

  • http://www.solongusa.blogspot.com Danielle

Why was that “Blessed Puddle” even advertised as a hot spring? lol. I agree about the long hair, sometimes I just want to cut it all off so it doesn’t keep flying around everywhere!

    -Danielle | solongusa.blogspot.com

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Right! That was what I said as well, it is very misleading advertisement. Every time the wind blows my hair around I also am just like ugh cut it off.

  • http://www.anestingnomad.com/ Rachel

The Blessed Puddle is hilarious! That does look more like a sheep dip than a relaxing spa experience… Just goes to show the power of good PR! Still, at least you found that stunner of a waterfall on your way. And I’m British so I talk about the weather ALL the time - totally normal. I’m always on for a chat about how unexpectedly nice/rainy/hot it’s been recently…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ha, I think it has to be a little spot for the sheep, definitely not a relaxing spa lol. The weather is just always a safe topic to talk about! :)

  • Eric Brink

Have you ever been disappointed by a place you visited? Fisherman’s Wharf every time! For the life of me, I don’s know what people see in this place (aside from walking through to get to the Alcatraz boat).

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

True, those popular touristy places tend to be ones that I never enjoy either.

  • Eric Brink

Here’s a question for you. What cool Iceland places have you found during your research that were new and surprised your native Viking?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Tons! Brúarfoss, Faxi, a bunch of our hiking trails. Since I have been living here I think he has seen dozens of new places, just what happens when you are from somewhere you don’t tend to explore as much. I know I have seen several new places in Oregon when my Viking has traveled there with me.

  • http://www.adventuresofalondonkiwi.com/ Emma @ AdventuresofaLondonKiwi

Ah, the Sacred Puddle - I have my fingers crossed (the non-typing ones) for more sunshine and discovering of bigger puddles, I mean pools :D

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha :) Me too, more pools, less puddles :)

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

hahaha the puddle looks awesome! i’m so glad this year/winter has been better for you. i totally would have cried if snow fell on me haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much girl! Ha, that snow in April last year, not cool.

  • http://www.smalltownsandcitylights.com/ Rachel @ STCL

It’s so awesome that you guys always track down these places where nobody else is around! So much more enjoyable to take in the scenery that way! The Blessed Puddle though… haha. At least you don’t have to wonder about it anymore!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Totally agree, I love getting to take in these places with no one else around:) Haha right, at least now I know that the Blessed Pool is not really for swimming :)

  • https://theredphoneboxtravels.wordpress.com/ Tanja / The red phone box trav

cool! a blessed puddle is just a puddle:))
