Greece on the Mind

January to me feels like one long deary Monday. Add in only a few hours of daylight and below freezing tempatures, yeah I am so over winter. So as I was putting on my usual three layers yesterday morning I found myself daydream about how nice it would be to just throw on a swimsuit and spend the day at the beach. In the dead of winter who isn’t dreaming this?

Sadly a beach vacation is not happening anytime soon and I am left with just my memories and pictures of past beach days. I have been really lucky and have visited some beautiful beaches in places like Hawaii, Australia, Italy and France. When it comes to beautiful beaches though Greece steals the show!

H and I spent two weeks island hoping between Mykonos, Naxos and Santorini and I can’t wait to plan another trip back there. To help me thaw out a bit I am reliving my favorite beaches in Greece, hopefully they will help brighten your winter day as well.

Greece Beach

MykonosMykonos

We visited Greece in the middle of September so we scored on empty beaches, awesome deals on accommodation, and friendly locals excited to give the last of the tourist helpful tips. We spent many of our days spent on beaches like this and I never wanted to leave!

Mykonos

Mykonos is known for its epic parties over the summer but since we came at the end of the summer we missed out on all the craziness. This was more than okay with us though for instead we were able to have a relaxing beach vacation, with the occasional drink or two thrown in :)

Mykonos Beach Day

NaxosNaxos

Our time in Naxos was so relaxing, the beaches were all nearly empty so it felt like the island was ours to enjoy. We easily settled into the beach bum lifestyle and with a hotel room right on the beach we enjoyed beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the ocean.

Naxos Beach Bums

Naxos Sunrise

SantoriniSantorni Black Sand Beach

Santorini beaches were so beautiful and interesting. With the black and red sand beaches Santorini beaches are definitely a sight to see!

Red Beach Santorini

Oh I am so ready for a break from this winter weather with a beach vacation. Amazing sunsets, lazy days on the beach and fancy cocktails, take me back to Greece asap!

Question of the Day?
Anyone else dreaming of a beach vacation??

Ohh, I love Greece too!!! We have been to the islands of Paros and Santorini! I think my husband and I have probably been the only couple in history to fall asleep and miss the famed Santorini sunset, but we at least got a story out of it. Thanks so much for stopping by Patti Cake as well! Cheers!

  • BlushandBarbells

NO. I’m dying for winter. It’s so hot and dry here that it’s already fire season (usually this happens in September) and my allergies are horrible (because it’s all about me heh heh)

    Great photos!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh no, allergies are the worst and that is so scary already fire season! Where do you live, feel free to head up to Iceland to cool down:)

I miss the beach! Everyday on Instragram, all my friends at home post beachy photos and I get so jealous. I can’t wait to visit Greece, I need some sun in my life

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh so not fair, at least back at home everyone is just as cold and ready for summer as me. Yes Greece is amazing I can’t wait to visit again!

  • la petite lulu

Ohhh, your photos bring back happy beach memories! I must admit, as much as I love living in California - the beaches here just DON’T compare to Australia ;) Greece is up there on my favs though - Santorini in particular is gorgeous. Love the shot of the red beach!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Isn’t that red beach beautiful! You are lucky with some beautiful beaches in California any (warm) beach sounds amazing to me right now!

  • http://ifsandsandbutts.com/ Alex

A friend and I are going to try and plan a Greece vacation for April! How did you hop around between the islands? Love the goggle pic and the one with all the bottles around, what a special trip for y’all.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Yes go and take me with you! We used ferries to get between and got pretty decent deals on them. I will have to check through our old info to find out what company we used and I will let you know:) It was a amazing trip, you and your friend are going to have a blast as well!

  • http://www.handandtheheart.com/ Andrea Laughery

Awesome! I went to Greece in March and the beaches weren’t super warm. :-/ Thanks for the January lift!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Its always a bummer when you don’t get beach day weather, but at least you got to visit Greece and I hope try some amazing food, I know I ate my fair share of food there it was so good!

Hi Kiki, In good (actually too good) California weather we’re dreaming of our upcoming ICELAND vacation, which is why I’ve been reading your blog. Since being a child I’ve wanted to visit Iceland after seeing the volcanoes on the Icelandic postage stamps. Now we’re excited to see the Aurora, so have planned the trip at the Equinox and in a year of high sunspots.

Hi Bill! Thanks for following along I hope you have gotten some ideas from my blog. Feel free to message me anytime with any questions you may have, were headed off this weekend to try and get a good look of the Northern Lights, I will be sure to report back on our luck! Iceland is beautiful and you will have an amazing time!

Tks ur very considerate response. My daughter graduated from U of O some years ago and is now a CPA in Seattle. In 1991 I bought a house, for rental, in Bend OR.. now rented to same people for 14 years. So amazed you could leave beautiful OR. but what a wonderful adventure for you.

Our plan, after consulting with a local friend who visited with his neice in 2010,. . . couple days in Reykjavic (we have a B&B picked out near the airport that looks interesting), then rent a car and travel for a few days on the road, taking in the sites, then a final two or three nights at the Ion lodge (pricey! — we have reservations. . but they can be cancelled). The question. . is it ok to be driving on the highway in late march, (snow?) and do we need advance reservations along the way? I would rather not have to rent a car, but that seems to be necessary.

Have been listening to RÚV radio via internet. . .but maybe won’t try to learn Icelandic with just a couple months! But fun to just listen.

Thanks so much, Bill and Barbara

What a small world, I have my business degree from the UofO love that school! It should be okay to drive in most areas during March, Iceland does have crazy weather but they usually do a good job of keeping the roads clear, its mostly the wind you have to be careful with when driving.

It probably is necessary to rent a car if you want to travel outside of the city at all. That is great that you have been listening to the radio, I have been studying Icelandic for a few months in classes and it is one tough language. Best of luck!
