The Hidden Waterfall of the North // Kolugjúfur, Iceland

Before we start this post you should know three facts about me:

One: I love waterfalls

Two: I love visiting places no one else knows about

Three: I have no restraint on the number of pictures I take of waterfalls

With that being said this post is about a less known waterfall in the north, I loved my visit there, and I took a ton of pictures that I am about to share.

Now lets continue with the waterfall.

Kolugjúfur was not on our schedule when we headed up north, in fact neither H or I had ever heard of this beauty. I have the lovely Rakel, owner of Hvammstangi cottages (aka the most charming cottage in Iceland!) to thank for sharing this hidden gem with us.

Locals, they are the best travel guide ever!

With directions in hand I knew exactly where I wanted to kick off my 26th birthday. Talk about jumping into a new year with a big splash! Kolugjúfur is almost hidden from the gravel road you take to get to it. In fact I honestly couldn’t see anything and thought we were lost when H pulled over. But once you walk down the short path you are greeted with Kolugjúfur in all its glory. It is amazing!

Doesn’t it look like no waterfall is anywhere in sight?

I mean really, it looks like just a beautiful canyon right?

“H I am telling ya there is no waterfall here”

Oh wait what is that in the distance, okay fine I will climb down these slippery rocks.

Kolugjúfur is that you back there?

Hello Kolugjúfur, happy birthday to me!

Okay commentary over, the rest of our time at Kolugjúfur was spent with me running around trying to get closer while I directed H around to take more pictures. It was my birthday after all.

Standing right next to Kolugjúfur was pretty amazing, you could get so close to the waterfall! I couldn’t of asked for a better way to kick off my birthday!

Kolugjúfur is a great addition to anyone’s trip to Hvammstangi, if your headed that way make sure to add it to your list! I mean who doesn’t like enjoying big beautiful waterfalls all to themselves?

And if your looking for another hidden waterfall to check out in Iceland be sure to visit Gljúfrabúi, the hidden waterfall of the south of Iceland!

Question of the Day?
Are you a fellow waterfall lover? Do you ask locals for tips when traveling?

oh these pictures are gorgeous! you know, i don’t think i have actually ever seen a real live waterfall, can you believe it? clearly that needs to change.
i have had good luck and bad luck with asking locals for recommendations. when we were in london in 2010, we asked someone for a recommendation for dinner and it was seriously the most amazing, wonderful, mind blowing restaurant ever and we always talk about it and going back but neither of us can remember what it was called or where it was lol. plus, it’s been 5 years. bad experiences we’ve had, we’ve ended up at dodgy bars or boring attractions. oh well, they all make good stories!

What! You need to get up to Iceland to get your fill of waterfalls!

Yes true, not all recommendations are winners but your right at least it usually makes for a good story! Hope your having a blast on your trip!

There is a tiny sentence about this place in the Lonely Planet book. We took the gravel road to see how far off the beaten path it was. I love that there are so many places like this in Iceland. AH-mazing.

    Happy birthday!

Glad you made it to Kolugljúfur! I went on my last trip to Iceland. I have no idea how my hubby found out about it since it seemed barely mentioned online, but when we approached there was a tour bus there - thankfully, it was just about to leave so we got to enjoy the waterfall by ourselves. I just love those moments in Iceland where you can have amazing places all to yourself!

      Thanks Sara!

Ya I have never seen anything about it online but we saw a tour bus in the area as well. Glad you got to enjoy it on your own for a bit, that really is one of the best things about Iceland!
