I Hike For Waterfalls // Glymur, Iceland

I hike for waterfalls.

I need this on a shirt because this is the truth! There is no way I would cross a river on a log, climb up a rocky hillside with only a rope for balance, or walk narrow pathways with terrifying drop offs if it weren’t for the waterfalls to be discovered at the end.

And the hike back to the beautiful Glymur waterfall, it is worth all that effort!

Glymur is the second highest waterfall in Iceland, which basically means you all need to see it. If you do this hike you will get a “I hike for waterfalls” shirt. Deal?! Seriously though I really need to look into these shirts!

Back to the hike.

Glymur is one of the most beautiful hikes I have done in Iceland, and that is saying a lot, you guys have seen the beautiful hikes I have got to do around here!

What makes Glymur truly special to me is the nature in this area, it is gorgeous! And when you are feeling the burn as you sweat your way up the steep hillside it helps to have something pretty to look at (and I am not talking about my Vikings backside, although that is nice as well:) to motivate you to keep on climbing.

The nature in this area, it is motivation enough to keep on going!

And this little photo shoot of beautiful nature was all in the first five minutes!

Now my first time hiking Glymur I took this first part of the hike as a sign that this would be a nice easy hike back to a beautiful waterfall. At the time I remember thinking how glad I was that the Viking had finally taken me to a hike that I could actually manage without turning into a sweaty mess.

This dream world of mine, it quickly changed, as soon as I walked through a cave.

In case you didn’t catch that, the start of the hike has a cave for a doorway, how awesome is that! Thankfully it is a very large and open cave so no issues of claustrophobia occur.

The cave, aka doorway to Glymur

Okay the walk through the cave is still nice and easy, it goes on the “this hike is rainbows and butterflies” side, as does the beautiful river that greets you on the other side of the cave.

That picture up above. The one of me pretending to play in the puddle, or something like that. That is actually me trying to delay what I know is about to happen since I know that my hike is about to leave the “rainbows and butterflies” side and enter the “why did I think this was a good idea” side. This is all due to the log.

The beautiful places never have an easy path ?

The beautiful places never have an easy path, ain’t that the truth!

I must toot my own horn here though and say I handled this attempt at crossing the log much more gracefully than my first time at Glymur. Let’s compare.

First time:

Second time:

If my laughing is any indicator you can tell round two went much smoother. If you have any coordination at all this obstacle will be no problem for you. Just ask H, he practically danced across the log.

All pumped up on my successful log crossing we took off for the steep climb up the rocky hillside. Thankfully there is lots of pretty views to help somewhat distract me from the pain I felt in my legs and the shaky feeling in my gut from my fear of heights.

I told you guys this hike was hard work:)

A group of hikers passed by when H was taking these pictures of me, I think they thought I really was struggling and that face was no joke. They even asked H if we needed any help haha. They probably thought what is this guy doing while she is down there struggling or something. It had me cracking up for the rest of the hike, hence the second picture of me laughing.

And this one, of me still laughing.

Glymur, IcelandGlymur, Iceland

After what felt like ages of climbing we finally caught a glimpse of Glymur in the distance. And this is where my mantra, “I hike for waterfalls” came to be as I repeated it (much to H’s enjoyment) the rest of the way up the steep hillside.

Thankfully by this point we were almost to the top and soon we came to a somewhat flat area that has some stunning views. Once I have reached this point of the hike, and finally caught my breath, it is right back to the “rainbows and butterflies” thoughts about this hike. How could it not be though, just check out these views!

Oh you know, just doing a little tree pose on a cliff, no big deal. I wish I hadn’t deleted the outtake real of this pose, some of those pictures made for a good laugh.

After taking in the views we headed off for the last little bit of the hike so we could get up close and personal with Glymur. We didn’t hike all that way for nothing!

A Saturday well spent chasing waterfalls and sneaky rainbows

SO beautiful! I love a good hike! I’ve only seen one full blown waterfall in my life, and that was in the rainforest in Puerto Rico. This is so cool! I’m jealous :)

Haha I was so worried I would fall in! A lot of people just turn around at that point, we saw so many people debating if they should cross and then just left without seeing the waterfall!

So beautiful!! Do you remember how long the hike was? Seems like quite a distance….

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The hike is only like 4-5km round trip but they say it can take 2-4 hours round trip. I think we did it in about two hours but that was with lots of stopping for pictures :)

  • oross

WOW amazing pictures!!! That log gives me a panic attack just looking at it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha that log totally stresses me out!

  • courtney jones

Iceland is such a beautiful country and I see that more and more through your pictures. I never knew much about Iceland and it’s scenery/nature. All I knew about was the northern lights, I didn’t realise it had so many waterfalls and so much to offer. I can’t wait to visit next year! I only live in the u.k so no excuse!
Me and hiking have a love hate relationship but with those views and scenery I would not complain! Although that log over the water may just do me in.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So glad I can share the beautiful Iceland with you! I hope you get to make it up this way soon :)

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

So pretty - I guuuuuesssss I’d like for that haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha right, I guess I can handle the hikes as long as they have pretty waterfalls at the end :)

  • http://www.alonewithmytea.com Julie || alonewithmytea.com

How long did the entire hike (to the waterfall and back) take? I’d be so scared of that log, but it gives you such bragging rights! ;) Beautiful pictures!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The hike took us around two hours with lots of picture taking stops. We moved pretty fast when we were walking though, it says on the hike information to give 2-4 hours to complete. Such an amazing hike, I definitely recommend it if your ever in Iceland!

That rainbow!! All of your posts about Iceland make me want to visit it even more. Do you think Iceland is doable on a shoestring budget? I’m a college student so money is tight and I’d be visiting next summer!

    xo, endlesspostcards.com

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think Iceland can be done on a budget, it would take some planning but a lot of the must see is the nature which is free:) if you don’t visit in the high season you can get good prices on accommodation. May is actually the lowest time but the weather is decent and I think a good time to visit:)

  • Fred

    How long is this hike?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I would give anywhere from 2-4 hours for this. It can be done in two but that is if your walking quickly and not stopping for many pictures :)

  • Borja Pedro

Your estimated 2-4 hours is going to the waterfall and coming back? I am planing to go there but I have a lack of time, would apreciate if you could clarify me this :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Hi! Yes, that is for the overall trip. It can be done there and back in 2 hours but depending on oh many stops you make and pictures you take it can be closer to 4. Hope you enjoy:)

  • Rose Turley

Was considering cutting Glymur from our upcoming trip, but your post has swayed me- i need to do this hike!! Other reviews made it difficult to gauge how tough the hike would be/how long it would take, but you have rekindled my confidence that it can be done. Question though: if we are coming in from Borgarnes on Ring Road, what’s the easiest way to access the beginning of the Glymur hike??
Thanks for all of your help and for your stellar posts! You’ve helped me plan so much of my upcoming trip! Stay fab! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Hi Rose! This hike is really gorgeous and definitely worth it in my opinion. To get to Glymur from Borgarnes you will stay on the Ring Road and then it is just one easy turn onto road 47 to reach it. The parking lot for the hike is easy to see right off the side of the road as well :) Hope this helps! Thanks so much for reading and let me know if you have any other questions!

    • David Remington

Definitely don’t miss it, it was the best hike we did in Iceland. If you want a take a fun gravel road from Borgarnes, I recommend taking road 50 through the mountains.
