My Icelandic Adventures Via Instagram // Life Lately

The past few months I have made it my mission to get out and explore new places in Iceland every free day I have. You see, after the long winter of 2015 my feelings towards Iceland were not the most loving. In fact, if I am being totally honest, I was really struggling with life here in Iceland and honestly wasn’t sure if I could picture myself spending another year here.

But, this often too cold country is the homeland of my Viking, and while I may not love the cold weather I love my Viking and knew I needed to figure out a way to love (at least be happy) with Iceland. Insert in my plan to explore and appreciate Iceland for what it is (a natural beauty!) and the weekend adventures of Kiki and her Viking began.

Can't complain about the view #thevikinginhishabitat

Weekend adventures with the Viking in tow #thevikinginhishabitat

H knew I really struggled this past winter, poor guy was the one stuck inside with me and my cabin fever which was not always a pretty sight, so when I told him my new plan of weekend exploring he was all in. Mini trips around Iceland with my Viking in tow, this was my best idea ever!

Our weekends now consist of me dragging H all over this country discovering more beauty than I thought possible. My free time is spent browsing the web, checking out Pinterest and Instagram and anywhere else I can think of in search of the best hidden gems around Iceland. My favorite is when I find spots that H, and even many Icelanders, hasn’t been to. I love getting to share with them a piece of beauty from their own home.

And you know what has come from all of this exploring?

I have a new appreciation and love for Iceland that never would have happen from me just trying to tough it out in my daily routine. Oh no, these new warm fuzzy feelings toward Iceland have all come from my time spent getting to know more of the country and everything it has to offer.

Today's adventure had me falling in love with Iceland all over again!

From beautiful waterfalls to out of this world blue water, hot springs and glaciers, these past few months have been filled with amazing adventures. The best thing though that has come out of these adventures, the number of people who have told me I have inspired them to explore more of there own backyard and be more adventurous. To them I respond, try glacier climbing!

Not really, instead every time someone tells me this I blush and get all awkward and mumble some form of thank you. But then I run off to H about how that comment was the highlight of my day. And tell him of a new spot we are checking out next weekend.

Seriously though, inspiring others to live a life of adventure and explore their own backyard, this just makes me oh so happy because a life of adventure is what it should all be about!

Exploring your own backyard, it really is just the best and I encourage everyone to do it! If your ever feeling in a slump or feeling uninspired, get out and spend time with the nature around you, it makes you see the world around you in a whole new way!

All these weekend adventures have me almost ready to face another Icelandic winter, but please Icelandic winter, hold off for several more months, I have more exploring to do!

I never say no to weekend adventures! 👣

I really admire that you found an amazing way to overcome a hard winter. Exploring is 100% the best way to deal with those kind of feelings, especially when you are away from home. You have definitely opened my eyes up to what an amazing place Iceland is too, I really can’t believe how much beauty it has to offer and I wish I had known about all of these places when I visited a few years ago :) Thank you for the inspiration!

God, spring in Moscow was also ungodly beautiful & you so quickly forgot about how torturous winter was. When winter came back though, ugh!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know right, as soon as the sun comes out it is like we are brainwashed and forget about the horrible winter! Did it get very warm during the spring and summer months?

I hope so! Last time I was there it was April, so it was still partially covered with snow. Hoping that the snow hasn’t yet to arrived when I get there. But I’m swedish, so snow and cold don’t scare me away! :D

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ah yes I feel like the spring is much more temperamental! At least the past few falls when I have been here the weather has been nice so I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

I love that you went out and did all of this to help you get over the winter. I really struggle with winter here as well - i mean, it’s no Iceland but it sure is worse than Sydney!! I wish we had more fun things to do around here, maybe i need to explore more so that I don’t hate life come winter again!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really has helped change my attitude so much about Iceland, now if this will last through the next winter it to be decided! I just need to live on a tropical island, life goal!

These photos are all amazing!! You really are so inspiring Kaelene!! After such a long hard winter I don’t blame you for feeling a bit out of sorts with Iceland but good for you for taking ownership of it and getting out there and exploring! Finding hidden gems in your own backyard feels like such a great accomplishment - even bette when you can pass that info on to others! Xx

  • http://www.themidnightblog.com/ Charlotte

Stunning photos! Sorry to hear about the winter struggle, and glad to see you managed to turn things around by falling in love with the country again! I sometimes feel the same way and you’re right: there’s nothing like a little backyard exploring to remind you why you came here in the first place (and why, deep down, you actually love it!). :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is so true, reminding yourself why you moved here in the first place changes your outlook so much!

Those pictures are so breathtaking! I mean the water it doesn’t even look real how crazy blue it is! I really want to add Iceland to my bucket list but I think it would be a trip without Mark lol

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I can’t believe how many crazy blue pools of water there is around Iceland! Is Mark not a fan of colder temperatures lol :) Head on up, I will travel around with you!

  • http://megantofrancewithlove.blogspot.com/ Megan

Such gorgeous photos! Your weekend adventures look amazing, so glad you got past the winter blues, those are rough, especially when it’s a different country than you’ve spent the last 20+ winters in lol

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Megan! I really was so spoiled with my winters in Oregon, I can’t believe I use to complain about them ha.

  • http://crankymigrant.wordpress.com Sergio @ The Cranky Migrant

Wow, how come I never found your blog earlier?? Iceland is my favorite country ever!! I actually wanted to move there last year but due to external issues, I couldn’t.
I’ve heard about the winters there (though sometimes in NY they are just as cold), they could be pretty depressing. I also met a few people who moved there to be with their other half.
    I love your Icelandic adventures!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks for stopping by! Isn’t Iceland just the best! Luckily when it does get cold it is never to much below zero, that is until the wind whips by and freezes you! It amazes me how many people are here with there other Icelandic half. Those Icelanders must travel the world and fall in love all over the place! Thanks for reading :)

  • http://www.smalltownsandcitylights.com/ Rachel @ STCL

So great that you’re getting out and exploring! I don’t have much experience with rough winters since I’ve lived in FL most of my life, but I can imagine you’d go a bit stir crazy after awhile. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your explorations of Iceland, can’t wait to get there one day myself! It looks so pretty!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Rachel! I used to complain so much about my winters in Oregon, now I know those are nothing compared to winters in most other places. A Florida winter, that sounds like my kind of winter!

  • http://adventitiousviolet.com/ Camila @ AdventitiousViolet

Aw that’s lovely! I have been a hard time living in Scotland again and definitely having adventures helps feel more at home! I am so jealous of your climbing a glacier by the way! :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really helps my attitude about Iceland when I get to get out and explore!
