The past few months I have made it my mission to get out and explore new places in Iceland every free day I have. You see, after the long winter of 2015 my feelings towards Iceland were not the most loving. In fact, if I am being totally honest, I was really struggling with life here in Iceland and honestly wasn’t sure if I could picture myself spending another year here.
But, this often too cold country is the homeland of my Viking, and while I may not love the cold weather I love my Viking and knew I needed to figure out a way to love (at least be happy) with Iceland. Insert in my plan to explore and appreciate Iceland for what it is (a natural beauty!) and the weekend adventures of Kiki and her Viking began.
H knew I really struggled this past winter, poor guy was the one stuck inside with me and my cabin fever which was not always a pretty sight, so when I told him my new plan of weekend exploring he was all in. Mini trips around Iceland with my Viking in tow, this was my best idea ever!
Our weekends now consist of me dragging H all over this country discovering more beauty than I thought possible. My free time is spent browsing the web, checking out Pinterest and Instagram and anywhere else I can think of in search of the best hidden gems around Iceland. My favorite is when I find spots that H, and even many Icelanders, hasn’t been to. I love getting to share with them a piece of beauty from their own home.
And you know what has come from all of this exploring?
I have a new appreciation and love for Iceland that never would have happen from me just trying to tough it out in my daily routine. Oh no, these new warm fuzzy feelings toward Iceland have all come from my time spent getting to know more of the country and everything it has to offer.
From beautiful waterfalls to out of this world blue water, hot springs and glaciers, these past few months have been filled with amazing adventures. The best thing though that has come out of these adventures, the number of people who have told me I have inspired them to explore more of there own backyard and be more adventurous. To them I respond, try glacier climbing!
Not really, instead every time someone tells me this I blush and get all awkward and mumble some form of thank you. But then I run off to H about how that comment was the highlight of my day. And tell him of a new spot we are checking out next weekend.
Seriously though, inspiring others to live a life of adventure and explore their own backyard, this just makes me oh so happy because a life of adventure is what it should all be about!
Exploring your own backyard, it really is just the best and I encourage everyone to do it! If your ever feeling in a slump or feeling uninspired, get out and spend time with the nature around you, it makes you see the world around you in a whole new way!
All these weekend adventures have me almost ready to face another Icelandic winter, but please Icelandic winter, hold off for several more months, I have more exploring to do!
Question of the Day?
Do you explore your own backyard?
